Book Murder in the Mountains

Download or read book Murder in the Mountains written by Georgia Charles and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murder is traumatic and affects the lives of every family member, manifesting feelings of loss, sorrow, grief, anger, and gradual acceptance of the event. Murder in the Mountains: The Justus and Meadows Family Massacre is the true story of the murders of a mother, daughter, son-in-law, and three small grandsons. Even though the murders occurred over 100 years ago, the event still evokes an emotional response today, especially from the ancestors of Elizabeth Baker Justus (known in the community as Aunt Betty). Aunt Betty was a midwife and widow living in the small, rural community of Hurley in the mountains of southwest Virginia. Her youngest daughter, Lydia, Lydia's husband, George, and their three children lived in the home with Aunt Betty. They lived a quiet and simple life until one fall evening when murder entered the small log cabin and forever altered the lives of an entire family and community. The motive for this unspeakable tragedy is as old as time - money. Aunt Betty sold a large tract of timberland to the W. M. Ritter Lumber Company, a thriving business in the community. The person convicted of these murders was the Purchasing Agent for this company. Providing factual documentation, as well as the family history handed down through the generations, Georgia Charles presents the gripping and compelling story, detailing the tragic events that led to the murder of her ancestors. Murder in the Mountains: The Justus and Meadows Family Massacre is a thrilling page-turner readers will not discard until finished.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murder. Unexplainable disappearances. Illegal surveillance inside private homes. Human organ trafficking. A secret society with unorthodox customs. Are these occurrences mere coincidences, or are the inexplicable phenomena connected? Welcome to Sunnyside Meadows, an elite community housing eclectic, bizarre citizens, one of whom is a cold-blooded murderer hiding in plain sight. Undercover FBI Agents Cal and Janna Dillard are sent to Newton, Pennsylvania to investigate reports of a human organ trafficking ring, unaware that the home they’re assigned to in the Meadows was the site of two grisly murders a month prior. Their residency inadvertently involves them in a homicide investigation being conducted by Dale Benson, a dogged detective who’s committed to proving that Bill and Barbara Hamner were murdered by someone in the neighborhood. Collaborating to solve both cases, what they uncover is disturbing and unlike any assignment they’ve ever been embroiled in. A unique clique led by the mysterious Belladonna, a dark figure whose true identity is unknown, dominates the Meadows and its inhabitants. But this is no ordinary cult. The sect members are toxic and inhumane with ravenous appetites, and all are willing to kill to keep their ominous secret quiet. Cal, Janna, and Benson have less than twenty-four hours to devise a plan that will get them onto heavily guarded and secured property to rescue the young girl who’s being held hostage and prevent her from becoming the lodge’s next casualty.

Download or read book Murder Along the Cape Fear written by David T. Morgan and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murder Along the Cape Fear is the story of Fayetteville and Fort Bragg, North Carolina, during the twentieth century. Seen through the eyes of a native son, this is the tale of one - a distinguished historian - who lived through some of it and heard about much of it from friends and relatives. In this hundred-year journey the town was profoundly impacted by the establishment of Fort Bragg 10 miles to its west. Throughout this hundred-year history, murder seems to be the scarlet thread that stitched the town into infamy. The book demonstrates that Fayetteville was by no means innocent prior to the coming of Fort Bragg. Nor did all of the crime and evil emanate from Fort Bragg after 1918. As for murder, there was an abundance of killing that had no connection with Fort Bragg, but the most sensational murder case of the century involved Jeffrey MacDonald, a Green Beret Army captain and physician who received three life terms in federal prison for killing his pregnant wife and two daughters. While many other Fort Bragg soldiers were involved with murders along the Cape Fear, murders were also committed by transient civilians and local citizens like the famous inventor of the M-1 carbine, Marshall "Carbine" Williams, and Velma Barfield, who poisoned her mother and three other people. In all, about two dozen murder cases-some highly publicized and some not-are woven into this story about a North Carolina town in the twentieth century. Engagingly told, this book is a wonderful blend of history, lore, and murder.

Download or read book Mountain Meadows Massacre written by Richard E. Turley and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 11, 1857, a group of Mormons aided by Paiute Indians brutally murdered some 120 men, women, and children traveling through a remote region of southwestern Utah. Within weeks, news of the atrocity spread across the United States. But it took until 1874—seventeen years later—before a grand jury finally issued indictments against nine of the perpetrators. Mountain Meadows Massacre chronicles the prolonged legal battle to gain justice for the victims. The editors of this two-volume collection of documents have combed public and private manuscript collections from across the United States to reconstruct the complex legal proceedings that occurred in the massacre’s aftermath. This exhaustively researched compilation covers a nearly forty-year history of investigation and prosecution—from the first reports of the massacre to the dismissal of the last indictment in 1896. Volume 1 contains the first half of the story: the records of the official investigations into the massacre and transcriptions of all nine indictments. Eight of those indictments never resulted in a trial conviction, but the one that did is documented extensively in Volume 2. Historians have long debated the circumstances surrounding the Mountain Meadows Massacre, one of the most disturbing and controversial events in American history, and painful questions linger to this day. This invaluable, exhaustively researched collection allows readers the opportunity to form their own conclusions about the forces behind this dark moment in western U.S. history.
