Book Murder at the Library of Congress

Download or read book Murder at the Library of Congress written by Margaret Truman and published by Random House (NY). This book was released on 1999 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Truman looks inside one of D.C.'s great institutions, the Library of Congress, the place where much of the wisdom of the nation is collected, and finds blood on the floor. Was there a second diary, beyond the one Columbus kept, describing his voyage to the New World? Leading scholars at the Library of Congress think so, and Annabel Smith, with her pre-Columbian interests, has been commissioned by the library's magazine, "Civilization, to write about it. She is not the only person interested. Word comes through the rare-books black market that a wealthy bibliophile has been offered the second diary: He'd not only pay, he'd almost kill to possess it. Starting her search in the library itself, Annabel soon finds herself competing with an ambitious TV journalist. As both women come closer to finding the hidden documents, other questions creep up. Was the murder of the library's most prominent Hispanic scholar connected to the missing diary? Further research leads them deeper into barely explored corners of the library and closer to having to face their own mortality. Murder in familiar yet surprising surroundings- a great library- leads to a surprising conclusion in this latest Capital Crime novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judge Willard Stevens has been murdered in the Hillville Iowa Public Library! It is a new scandal that electrifies everybody in town! A thrilling act of this kind seems to be what everybody has been needing to get their blood running faster. No one cares about the crooked Justice; his death seems to be a righteous judgement for his many sins, but to have him executed with a knife in the sacred halls of the kindly old Library is a blow that nobody expects. The Starfire men, always ready to give a hand to the bumbling sheriff of Bogger County, are on the scene as soon as they get the call, and the tussle between Sheriff Baylor and the Detective Agency begins anew. Lillian Stevens, the Judge's often pitied wife, is over in Atlantic visiting her mother when he is killed, and Atlantic is only an hour's drive away. That brings up a lot of questions, of course, but everybody knows that a gentle person like Lilly couldn't possibly be guilty of such a heinous act. Perhaps subtle poison, but not a knife in the back! Bessie Corcoran, who stumbles across the body, quite literally, is known in town as a friendly woman who really likes men, including Willard Stevens, with whom she now stands accused of a prolonged affair. Guy LaFevre, the head of murder investigations for the Starfire Agency, believes that Bess is a woman who has something to hide. She is, he thinks, counterfeit in some way. Reena Hoffenstot, the steely-cold Librarian, is not a woman you want to cross, nor is the Queen of Local Gossip, Betsy Thandry, who spreads her wild tales as far and wide as she possibly can, although most of the women who have listened to her in the past are no longer very interested in what she has to say. Hillville is a wonderful mix of every kind of intrigue and insanity, as well as the wholesome and gentle folk who inhabit most of the quietly white houses along the well-kept streets. It is something of an enigma that so much of the ills of humanity boils to the surface every once in a while, but, of course, that is small-town life in the 1950's, and that is exactly why Hillville is the wonderful, even at times exotic, place that it is.

Hayley Burke, curator of Lady Fowling's collection of first edition mysteries, is settling into her position at the First Edition Library in Middlebank House. She's even made progress with Lady Fowling's former secretary, the ornery Miss Woolgar. The women are busily preparing for an exhibition that will showcase Lady Fowling's life and letters. Hayley knows the exhibition is a huge undertaking and decides, against her better judgement, to hire Oona Atherton, her former boss from the Jane Austen Centre to help with the planning. Oona is known for being difficult, but all seems to be going swimmingly until she and Hayley uncover a one-page letter that alludes to a priceless edition of MURDER MUST ADVERTISE signed by several Golden Age of Mystery authors. Oona feels this book could be the focal point of the exhibition and becomes obsessed with finding it. When they find clues that appear to point to the book being somewhere in the First Edition Library, Oona is certain she's unraveled the mystery and texts Hayley the good news, but upon arriving back at Middlebank, Hayley finds her old boss dead at the bottom of the stairs. Did her discovery of the rare book get her killed or was it some angry shadow from her past? Hayley must read between the lines to catch a malicious murderer.
