Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Minnesota journalist breaks down the cold case that has beguiled a community and haunted his family for generations. At 3:30 a.m. on April 11, 1933, neighbors and firefighters arrived at the farmhouse of Albin and Alvira Johnson to find a smoldering heap where a seemingly happy home once stood. Beneath the ruins, investigators found the bodies of Alvira and her seven children, but Albin's remains were nowhere to be seen. The authorities determined that Alvira and the children were dead before the fire, and fingers immediately pointed to Albin. Hundreds of searchers, including the illustrious Pinkerton Agency, combed the area and even crossed into Canada in pursuit of Johnson, who was indicted in absentia for murder. But he was never found, dead or alive. What happened to the Johnson family and what part, if any, Albin played in the tragedy remain a mystery . . .

Book Murder in Minnesota

Download or read book Murder in Minnesota written by Walter N. Trenerry and published by Minnesota Historical Society Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My investigation of Minnesota murders over the years revealed no new motives for killing anyone. The old ones are perfectly satisfactory. . . . I hope you will find these murders interesting. I regret that I could not report the most ingenious and remarkable ones. They looked like accidents or natural deaths and were never discovered."--Walter N. Trenerry Murder in Minnesota features some of the state's most infamous criminals--a collection of fascinating and disagreeable characters usually ignored by historians. They live again in these pages as the conniving, clever, mad, or pitiful creatures they were. Fifteen chapters--involving both well-known and obscure practitioners of the deadly art--tell the stories of Ann Blansky, the only woman hanged in Minnesota; the famous Younger brothers, who with the James boys robbed the Northfield bank in 1876; the six Arbogast women of St. Paul, who kept a murderous secret that still remains undisclosed; and many more. Praise for Murder in Minnesota: "You should not overlook this exemplary work."--New York Times Book Review "An exemplary treatment of regional history as revealed by the spotlight of crime. Would that the other . . . state historical societies might follow Minnesota's noble example "--Anthony Boucher, Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine "A fine example of true-crime writing for all devotees of that form."--San Francisco Chronicle

Book Serial Murder and Media Circuses

Download or read book Serial Murder and Media Circuses written by Dirk C. Gibson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-07-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Axman of New Orleans specialized in killing grocers of Italian descent in the 1910s, apparently to promote jazz music. Dorothea Puente was a little old landlady who murdered her tenants, but kept cashing their government checks. The Manson Family terrorized California in the 1960s, as did the Hillside Stranglers a decade later. Twelve serial murder cases, occurring in eight decades between the 1890s and 1990s, had one thing in common: significant presence of the mass media. This book examines these specific cases of serial murder, and the way the media became involved in the investigations and trials of each. Gibson argues that the American media plays a multidimensional and integral role in serial killings and their investigation—and that this role is not generally a positive one. Serial murder cases motivate the media in unfortunate ways, and the result is that even typically respectable media organizations can be involved in such things as document theft, or in interfering with the capture of serial murderers on the run. This link between multiple murderers and mass communication is not accidental or coincidental; rather, the relationship between the press and serial killers is one of extraordinary importance to both parties. Gibson examines the role of the media in serial murder cases; the body of knowledge on serial murder as seen through the lens of mass communication; the effectiveness of law enforcement responses to serial murderers and how they might be improved if the mass communication influence was better understood; the magnitude of the serial murder problem; and the interaction between the media, the killers, and serial murder investigations. Specific examples and numerous quotes are provided throughout to illustrate this strange and detrimental relationship between media and serial murderers.

Book excerpt: Chasing Evil tells the story of the evolution of modern fugitive investigations within the United States Marshals Service and the pursuit of notorious criminals Andrew Phillip Cunanan, Rafael Resendez-Ramirez (The Railway Killer), the Texas Seven, and John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo, better known as the Beltway Snipers. It describes outstanding investigative effort, new technologies, camaraderie, partnerships, tragic and brutal murders, and the enthusiasm, emotion, and passion during these intense investigations. Chasing Evil takes you through high-profile investigations for a serial killer, spree killers, escaped inmates, domestic terrorists, cop killers, and desperate criminals. It describes the progression of America’s oldest federal law enforcement agency into the most successful and respected fugitive investigative organization in the world. Recognized historically as part of the lore of the Old West, the U. S. Marshals Service has played a critical role in the outcome of some of the most important investigations in the past forty years. Since 1979, the U. S. Marshals Service has partnered with local, state, federal, and international agencies to bring the most violent and dangerous fugitives to justice. The cases intersect with communities from San Diego, where spree killer Andrew Cunanan was raised, to our nation’s capital, where the Beltway Snipers created fear and chaos during a three-week period in October of 2002. The murderous path of the Railway Killer across six states and into Mexico, over 13 years, is examined and detailed. After escaping from a Texas prison, the Texas Seven killed Irving Police Officer Aubrey Hawkins on Christmas Eve before leading law enforcement on a month-long chase which ended in the mountains of Colorado. Although separate investigations, these men had several traits in common. Each one of them was dangerous, violent, and evil.

Book excerpt: The story Sweden’s Child is a semibiographical book of the life of my great-grandmother Inga Ohlsdotter. The family character’s, period, plot, story, town, farm names, and psychic abilities are all true. What I have added are local lore, historical references, and other characters, which increase the interest in the story. Because my mother was raised by her grandmother Inga, these stories have been passed down through generations. Life in Chicago has turned out well for Inga Ohlsdotter (Ida Olson) until nightmares come night after night. Will anyone believe her stories of murder or dismiss them as tales of a young girl who is troubled. This book is the conclusion of the series Sweden’s Child.

Book Murder and Madness

Download or read book Murder and Madness written by Patricia Lubeck and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murder is the willful killing of a human being with malice aforethought, either expressed or implied. Malice includes not only hatred and revenge, but every terrible and unjustifiable motive committed by one person against another. Malice indicates the state of mind of the person charged. Insanity is a legal and not a medical concept, and can be determined by applying certain legal tests. A hundred years ago, the wildest delusions were not always sufficient to get the prisoner off. The insanity defense had to show previous notorious acts to demonstrate the irrational behavior of the defendant. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the most common weapons of death were the ax, gun, knife and poison. Murder was never a bailable offense; the defendant remained in jail until the trial and, if convicted, until his execution. This book documents crimes, personal hardships and other struggles, which occurred in Renville County Minnesota from the late 1860s to early 1940s. Find out what happened to: Andrew Anderson who stabbed his wife with a knife; Michael Dowling who almost froze to death in a blizzard; Ole Rogn whose wife fell in a well; Lincoln Parker who murdered his brother-in-law in cold blood; Emanuel Otto, a wealthy farmer, who was poisoned and shot; three men who robbed a bank in Danube; Ed Corey who murdered the woman he loved; Fred Zaske who attacked his wife with an ax; Ed Butcher who shot his daughter while she wrote a letter; Paul Schoepke who had a dispute with his brother about a gun; Joe Williams who beat and robbed a hobo on the railroad tracks; Odin Norby, who embezzled money from his employer; Ottilie Lindeman who attacked her husband with an ax while he slept? These are just a few of the many crimes that took place in Renville County. After reading these stories, you'll be left with more questions than answers. Many of these cases remain unsolved to this day.
