Book excerpt: Beginning with his arrival in Arles in March 1888, a combination of factual and fictitious events relating to Vincent Van Gogh are revealed while the Dutchman goes about creating timeless works of art. A number of drawings and paintings of previously unknown locals are finally afforded names and backgrounds. Prominent amongst these is a portrait of a young girl to whom the artist is especially attracted. When she is found murdered, suspicion falls on Van Gogh. Harassed by both a tireless police inspector and a majority of the citizens of Arles, the painter descends into the madness and despair, culminating in his slicing off part of an ear while remaining sufficiently lucid to identify - and paint - the man he suspects of the crime. Circumstances and characters pertaining to the murder define aspects of Van Goghs personality, as well as portraying a way of life in nineteenth century France remarkably similar to present day problems in the USA.

Book Murder in Aubagne

    Book Details:
  • Author : D. M. G. Sutherland
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2009-04-20
  • ISBN : 0521883040
  • Pages : 337 pages

Download or read book Murder in Aubagne written by D. M. G. Sutherland and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-20 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of faction, lynching, murder, terror and counter-terror during the French Revolution. It examines factionalism in small towns like Aubagne near Marseille, and how this produced the murders and prison massacres of 1795-8. Another major theme is the convergence of lynching from below with official Terror from above. Although the Terror may have been designed to solve a national emergency in the spring of 1793, in southern France it permitted one faction to continue a struggle against its enemies, a struggle that had begun earlier over local issues like taxation and governance. It uses the techniques of micro-history to tell the story of the small town of Aubagne. It then extends the scope to places nearby like Marseille, Arles, and Aix-en-Provence. Along the way, it illuminates familiar topics like the activity of Clubs and revolutionary tribunals and then explores largely unexamined areas like lynching, the sociology of faction, the emergence of theories of violent fraternal democracy, and the nature of the White Terror.

Book excerpt: A wildly entertaining and surprisingly educational dive into art history as you've never seen it before, from the host of the beloved ArtCurious podcast We're all familiar with the works of Claude Monet, thanks in no small part to the ubiquitous reproductions of his water lilies on umbrellas, handbags, scarves, and dorm-room posters. But did you also know that Monet and his cohort were trailblazing rebels whose works were originally deemed unbelievably ugly and vulgar? And while you probably know the tale of Vincent van Gogh's suicide, you may not be aware that there's pretty compelling evidence that the artist didn't die by his own hand but was accidentally killed--or even murdered. Or how about the fact that one of Andy Warhol's most enduring legacies involves Caroline Kennedy's moldy birthday cake and a collection of toenail clippings? ArtCurious is a colorful look at the world of art history, revealing some of the strangest, funniest, and most fascinating stories behind the world's great artists and masterpieces. Through these and other incredible, weird, and wonderful tales, ArtCurious presents an engaging look at why art history is, and continues to be, a riveting and relevant world to explore.
