Book excerpt: When visiting New Orleans years ago, I searched for a book that would give me a quick feel for the City - a collection of information and ideas about culture and cuisine, along with a historical overview. Sadly, no such document existed. I wrote "Murder Etouffee" to correct this vacancy and to provide visitors to the Big Easy with a wealth of ideas and information to help them enjoy their stay in the city. "Murder Etouffee" is a collection of stories about Louisiana and New Orleans in particular. It also contains regional recipes and cooking tips that embody Creole and Cajun cuisine - stories and recipes giving readers an authentic "feel" for the people of New Orleans. Lagniappe is a French word meaning a gift or something extra, and "Murder Etouffee" gives its readers a "little something extra," taking them on a whimsical and historical tour of one of the most unique regions in the United States - a region recently subjected to the worst natural disaster in the history of this country.

Book excerpt: ON ANY SUNDAY MORNING IN THE FLORIDA REDLANDS, DEE CASTEEL MIGHT HAVE SERVED YOU PANCAKES AT THE IHOP … She was a hard-working, cheerful waitress, one of the nicest people you’d ever want to know. She was also a three-bottle-a-day alcoholic, hopelessly in love with the IHOP’s manager, Allen Bryant. Bryant wanted his live-in lover, IHOP owner Art Venecia, dead. And Dee Casteel helped him to arrange it. After Venecia’s murder, Dee and Bryant moved into his house, forged checks, spent his money, and embezzled from the IHOP to buy gifts for Bryant’s boyfriends. But there was an even more gruesome killing to come … WITHOUT MERCY is an engrossing, bizarre true story that traces the twisted path to a loathsome crime. But it is also the story of middle-class citizens gone wrong, of an almost-perfect murder, the traumas of alcoholism, and a legal system that can be deadly in itself. Dee Casteel was an ordinary woman—who now stands convicted of one of the most cold-blooded crimes of this century.

Book excerpt: On a summer day in 1898, a family in Dover, Delaware, shared a box of chocolates they received in the mail from an anonymous sender. Within days, two of the seven family members were dead; the other five became ill but recovered. The search for the perpetrator soon moved from Delaware to California, where a suspect was quickly identified: Cordelia Botkin, lover of the husband of one of the poisoned women. This book chronicles the shoddy investigation that led to Botkin's indictment and the two sensational trials, adjudicated in the press, that found her guilty. National attention was drawn by the cross-country nature of the crime and the fact that the supposed perpetrator had never been in Delaware in her life. It was also a trial over what was viewed as the moral and sexual depravity of the two main participants, Botkin and Dunning (the husband), with most of that criticism directed at Botkin.

A Double Life Dirk Greineder was a well-respected allergist whose home was valued at half a million dollars. He and Mabel had raised three children, who had all attended Yale, like their father. But the "good" doctor also indulged in a secret life involving phone sex, Internet porn, and motel trysts with prostitutes. A Family Destroyed A dogged investigation finally yielded enough evidence to lead to Greineder's arrest, and in a six-week trial that would make national headlines, he was supported by his three children, while the dead woman's sister and niece testified for the prosecution. Download or read book The Murder of Stanford White written by Dr. Gerald Langford and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evelyn Nesbit was a popular American chorus girl, an artists’ model, and an actress. In the early part of the Twentieth century, the figure and face of Evelyn Nesbit were everywhere, appearing in mass circulation newspaper and magazine advertisements, on souvenir items and calendars, making her a cultural celebrity. But it was on the evening of June 25, 1906 that she gained worldwide notoriety, when her husband, multi-millionaire Harry Kendall Thaw, shot and murdered architect and New York socialite Stanford White on the rooftop theatre of Madison Square Garden—leading to what the press would call “The Trial of the Century”. The Harry K. Thaw—Evelyn Nesbit—Stanford White story remains one of the great crime sensations of the Twentieth Century. Stanford White, an enormously rich man of high social position and supposedly blameless reputation, nevertheless led a private life that was at variance with his public reputation. His lavish stag dinner parties were well-known, and later played an important part in the famous murder trial. A gripping read.

Book The Death of Innocents

Download or read book The Death of Innocents written by Helen Prejean and published by Hymns Ancient and Modern Ltd. This book was released on 2006 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sr Helen Prejean has accompanied five men to execution since she began her work in 1982. She believes the last two, Dobie Williams in Louisiana and Joseph O'Dell in Virginia, were innocent, but their juries were blocked from seeing all the evidence and their defence teams were incompetent. 'The readers of this book will be the first "jury" with access to all the evidence the trail juries never saw', she says. The Death of Innocents shows how race, prosecutorial ambition, poverty and publicity determine who dies and who lives. Prejean raises profound constitutional questions about the legality of the death penalty.
