Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bill Kienzle's best yet." —Detroit Free Press "It is miraculous, but the third Father Koesler is even better than the first two. It is without reservation the best series ever about a priest detective." —Otto Penzler, owner, Mysterious Bookshop, New York City "Father Koesler is on the case, thank God." —Baltimore Sun Father Robert Koesler unravels his third mystery, this time zeroing in on one of six suspects, each with a motive for revenge, to solve the case of Detroit's missing monsignor. In Mind over Murder, writer William X. Kienzle challenges the reader to a game of reasoning. He sets the stage—Detroit's east side—and situation: Monsignor Thomas Thompson antagonizes a number of people and then mysteriously disappears. His Cadillac is found in a parking lot, with fingerprints wiped clean from the interior and an empty cartridge from a .32 caliber pistol and a bloody tissue left behind. Foul play is suspected by Detroit police and press. Father Koesler, central character in the Kienzle series, is called into the case by Walter Koznicki, inspector for the police department, to interpret the Catholic connection. Thompson's diary, found by Joe Cox, reporter for the Detroit Free Press, becomes a prime piece of evidence in the puzzle. The contents, exposing his innermost thoughts to investigators and the press, foreshadow ominous happenings. Whodunit? One by one, suspects are implicated by virtue of mention in Thompson's diary. Each has a grudge against him. Each knows the moment when he will be most vulnerable. And each has a perfect alibi—almost. Kienzle sets up a rational situation and, with motivation established for the suspects, all the reader has to do is add up the clues. But, as Inspector Koznicki comments, "With unpredictable human nature, every logical bit of evidence can point in one directions, only to prove a false lead."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Listening to Killers offers an inside look at twenty years' worth of murder files from Dr. James Garbarino, a leading expert psychological witness who listens to killers so that he can testify in court. The author offers detailed accounts of how killers travel a path that leads from childhood innocence to lethal violence in adolescence or adulthood. He places the emotional and moral damage of each individual killer within a larger scientific framework of social, psychological, anthropological, and biological research on human development. By linking individual cases to broad social and cultural issues and illustrating the social toxicity and unresolved trauma that drive some people to kill, Dr. Garbarino highlights the humanity we share with killers and the role of understanding and empathy in breaking the cycle of violence.

This book was released on 2022-12-23 with total page 4735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Thought movement (also Higher Thought) is a spiritual movement that coalesced in the United States in the early 19th century. New Thought was seen by its adherents as succeeding "ancient thought", accumulated wisdom and philosophy from a variety of origins, such as Ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Chinese, Taoist, Vedic, Hindu, and Buddhist cultures and their related belief systems, primarily regarding the interaction between thought, belief, consciousness in the human mind, and the effects of these within and beyond the human mind. Though no direct line of transmission is traceable, many adherents to New Thought in the 19th and 20th centuries claimed to be direct descendants from those systems. Napoleon Hill. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A case of mistaken identity leads to death and deception in this classic “three-ringed thriller . . . [with] plenty of shocks and jolts” (New York Herald Tribune). It’s not the first time the local press has made a mistake, but this one has consequences for Dr. Hugh Westlake. An article about an advocate of euthanasia has switched the name of the old quack named Westbrook to “Westlake,” which leads to Hugh getting summoned in the middle of an icy winter night for a mercy killing. The poor, fatally ill woman is the matriarch of a new, wealthy family in town. Ethically, all Hugh can do is ease her pain, so he leaves her with some morphine tablets and in the care of her beautiful daughter Hermia, a sight for sore eyes to the widower of eight years. But Mrs. Talbot’s unexpected death on the following morning—and her will—draw Hugh into the secrets of the odd household, which consists of her much younger husband, an adopted sibling, a flighty nurse, and a couple of mad scientists. And when another of Hugh’s terminally ill patients is found dead from a morphine overdose, he becomes the prime suspect in a case that comes down to the question of mercy—or murder . . . “This detective novel is teeming with nail biting thrills. . . . For a book written in the 1930s it still has some resonance for a 21st century reader.” —Pretty Sinister Books “One of those ‘one in a million’ mysteries that has everything . . . one can’t help enjoying it.” —Worcester Telegram

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a banquet in 1940s New York, the guest of honor is a goner: “A genuinely puzzling mystery . . . with the delightful wackiness that has made the Norths famous.” —The New York Times Tonight, Jerry North faces something so terrifying that no amount of martinis could quiet his nerves: He has to make a speech. He’s introducing one of his authors, Victor Leeds Sproul, a continental novelist whose delicate tales of Parisian life have been selling like hotcakes ever since the Nazis goose-stepped into the City of Light. Crippled by stage fright, Mr. North enters the banquet hall feeling like a condemned man, but he isn’t the one who will die. Despite his terror, North delivers the speech of his life. But when he introduces the guest of honor, the distinguished author doesn’t stand. Sproul’s eyes jerk open, his chest heaves, and he breathes his last. He has been murdered in plain sight, but it will take the combined genius of Jerry and Pamela North to find out who killed the writer, and committed the unforgivable crime of ruining a perfect speech. “[An] excellent series.” —The New Yorker Death Takes a Bow is the sixth book in the Mr. and Mrs. North Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.
