Book excerpt: "GIBBONEY SCORES A TOUCHDOWN IN ́MURDER AT CLEAVER STADIUM ́..." --HARRISBURG PATRIOT-NEWS "A FUN, ENJOYABLE READ." --PENN STATE DAILY COLLEGIAN "WE CAN ́T WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL! HOW SOON WILL IT BE READY?" --MECHANICSBURG PA MYSTERY BOOK SHOP DISCUSSION GROUP AN INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR Q: So why did you write Murder at Cleaver Stadium? A: Well, doesn ́t everyone want to write a murder mystery? The kind of book you can take to the beach or breeze through during an airplance ride. Fun to write and fun to read. Q: There ́s a lot of dark humor in the book. A: Yeah, it ́s an equal opportunity offender. Hopefully everyone will get the jokes and have a giggle. It ́s certainly not a text about criminal investigation. More like a comic book about real life. Q: You wrote this in the first person. A: Using the first person is fun for me. Plus it gives the book more authenticity and immediacy. Writing a novel is like looking through a kaleidoscope; you have ideas and experiences and then twist them all around into something new and completely different. Q: Why is it set in southcentral Pennsylvania? A: It ́s where I live and it ́s an interesting area. In fact, it gets more interesting all the time. I ́ve also spent a lot of time in Washington so some of the book is set there. Q: There are some unusual characters in the book, the Reverend Preston Cecil Jones, for one. A: Anyone who is both a lawyer and a minister has to be somewhat unusual. Rev. Jones is what I call a "man without fingerprints." He can get things done without being too obvious about it. Q: You have a corrupt state senator... A: Uh-huh. Senator Muncher. He was fun to create. Brings to mind the Jimmy Carter phrase about "a government as good as its people." But every novel needs good guys and bad guys. Q: This one seems to have more bad guys. A: Yeah, that ́s probably true. I ́m interested in seeing what the good guy/bad guy ratio is in the sequel. Q: You ́re working on that now? A: Yes. I have an outline and have started writing. But things change as the book takes on a life of its own. With this one, I honestly didn ́t know who the murderer would turn out to be until the last minute. In fact, I was kind of surprised. Q: There are a couple songs in the book... A: Four total. Two of them -- Lunch on the Moon and So Long Baby -- are on my new CD that ́s coming out next month. Q: You play piano? A: No, guitar. Martin guitars. They ́re the best.

Fenway has just opened, Ty Cobb is a nationwide sensation, and rookie Mickey Rawlings has finally made it to the majors. But just when he sets foot inside the confines of the green monster, his all-star dreams come crashing down—Rawlings is fingered for the monstrous murder of his teammate Red Corriden. Sure, someone decided to use Red for batting practice. But just because Rawlings has fouled off a lot of balls in his time doesn’t mean the cops have to be as blind as a rookie ump when it comes to his innocence. With no one watching his back, Rawlings has no choice but to switch his baseball cap for a sleuthing hat to clear his name. Otherwise, it’s going to be a short season in the majors and a long one behind bars . . . “Equal parts baseball and mystery are the perfect proportion.” —Robert Parker “Soos’ delightful debut, mixing suspense, period detail and such legendary baseball greats as Cobb, Walter Johnson, Smokey Joe Wood and Tris Speaker, is a four-bagger.” —Publishers Weekly

The national anthem is just winding down when Panzer spies a notable in the box seats: state senator Orson Milbank, a silver-haired scoundrel with enemies in every corner of upstate New York. In the fourth inning, a monstrous line drive brings every fan in the grandstand to his feet—every fan save for one silver-haired senator, who has been shot dead by a sniper in the upper deck. Archie’s employer—the rotund genius Nero Wolfe—has no interest in investigating the stadium slaying, but Archie is swayed by the senator’s suspiciously lovely widow. Her husband was mired hip-deep in corruption, and sorting out who killed him will be a task far less pleasant than an afternoon at the ball park.

Book In Praise of Blood

Download or read book In Praise of Blood written by Judi Rever and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A FINALIST FOR THE HILARY WESTON WRITERS' TRUST PRIZE: A stunning work of investigative reporting by a Canadian journalist who has risked her own life to bring us a deeply disturbing history of the Rwandan genocide that takes the true measure of Rwandan head of state Paul Kagame. Through unparalleled interviews with RPF defectors, former soldiers and atrocity survivors, supported by documents leaked from a UN court, Judi Rever brings us the complete history of the Rwandan genocide. Considered by the international community to be the saviours who ended the Hutu slaughter of innocent Tutsis, Kagame and his rebel forces were also killing, in quiet and in the dark, as ruthlessly as the Hutu genocidaire were killing in daylight. The reason why the larger world community hasn't recognized this truth? Kagame and his top commanders effectively covered their tracks and, post-genocide, rallied world guilt and played the heroes in order to attract funds to rebuild Rwanda and to maintain and extend the Tutsi sphere of influence in the region. Judi Rever, who has followed the story since 1997, has marshalled irrefutable evidence to show that Kagame's own troops shot down the presidential plane on April 6, 1994--the act that put the match to the genocidal flame. And she proves, without a shadow of doubt, that as Kagame and his forces slowly advanced on the capital of Kigali, they were ethnically cleansing the country of Hutu men, women and children in order that returning Tutsi settlers, displaced since the early '60s, would have homes and land. This book is heartbreaking, chilling and necessary.
