Book excerpt: The one-stoplight town of Daybreak, Ohio is still scarred from a horrific double-homicide and disappearance that happened three years earlier when journalist LOGAN JACKSON arrives from New York, looking to find a new topic to write about following an unexpected viral hit. Arriving in Daybreak to find a town deeply suspicious and seemingly hostile to all outsiders, Logan sets about trying to dig in to the Malone Murders, the tragic crime that still haunts the town, but finds resistance from all angles- law enforcement, the local press, and the population at large. The only person seemingly interested in helping his budding investigation is VICTORIA GIBBONS, best friend of ELIZA, the teenage victim. After turning up on his first night in town to 'vet' him and his motivations behind wanting to write about the case, Victoria turns in to his biggest supporter, grateful that someone finally wants to shine a national spotlight on the case. Despite initial resistance Logan's even-handed investigation and writing begins to thaw the icy relations with many in town, notably the Sheriff and local reporter ORSON WALCOTT, and his investigation begins to pick up steam as he zooms in on three possible suspects around town. Weathering threats and intimidation from the victim's ex-boyfriend, Logan begins to dig deeper in to the lives of the victims and their deep roots in the town. More and more people come forward, willing to speak about what they remember about the Malone's and the crime, but these interviews produce no real results. Logan continues to dig but finds himself at a brick wall until he begins to receive mysterious emails which include copies of the victim's financial records, indicating there was something amiss. Verifying they are real with local law enforcement he begins to dig in to what turns out to be a dark underbelly of life in Daybreak, which causes him no small stress as signs begin to point toward BRADLEY GIBBONS, Victoria's father, as a possible culprit. This puts a severe damper on their budding relationship. As Logan continues to dig Victoria comes to terms with her father's potential involvement and begins to assist him. After a guilt-wracked Orson confesses a startling secret about the local sheriff to Logan things look like they are finally coming together, when Logan is attacked out of the blue by the real murderer.

Download or read book Complex TV written by Jason Mittell and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and sustained analysis of the development of storytelling for television Over the past two decades, new technologies, changing viewer practices, and the proliferation of genres and channels has transformed American television. One of the most notable impacts of these shifts is the emergence of highly complex and elaborate forms of serial narrative, resulting in a robust period of formal experimentation and risky programming rarely seen in a medium that is typically viewed as formulaic and convention bound. Complex TV offers a sustained analysis of the poetics of television narrative, focusing on how storytelling has changed in recent years and how viewers make sense of these innovations. Through close analyses of key programs, including The Wire, Lost, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Veronica Mars, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Mad Men the book traces the emergence of this narrative mode, focusing on issues such as viewer comprehension, transmedia storytelling, serial authorship, character change, and cultural evaluation. Developing a television-specific set of narrative theories, Complex TV argues that television is the most vital and important storytelling medium of our time.

Download or read book Battlestar Galactica written by Roz Kaveney and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07-02 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The West Wing" or "Generation Kill" in Space? A show about God-fearing sex-obsessed robots? Or a complex meditation on fate, dreaming and eternal recurrence? Of all recent television science fiction series, the reimagined "Battlestar Galactica" is the most highly praised and consistently inventive and intelligent. Where the original show was a straightforward space opera, the new one is rich, strange and above all unpredictable. This book covers the new "Battlestar Galactica" from beginning to end, covering all of the show's principal themes from the depiction of sexuality in an era of artificial people and downloaded memories to what it means to be a member of a military organization when the stakes are not victory or defeat but survival. Like all the best shows about the future or the past - we are never sure when all this is supposed to be happening - "Battlestar Galactica" is a series about the present; chapters here cover its depiction of the post-9.11 world and such issues as abortion and worker's rights. This definitive book on the full new "Battlestar Galactica" also includes an interview with Jane Espenson, co-executive producer of the show's last seasons and writer/director of the "Battlestar Galactica" prequel film "The Plan", with a complete episode guide.

This book was released on 2021-05-21 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Media Meddlers is a provocative book that not only addresses one of the nation’s most controversial murder cases, but also indicts a sacred institution— the media—for the way some of its members used the power of the First Amendment to turn justice into injustice. Seldom has there been written a book that so clearly exposes the abuse of freedom of speech. Early on the morning of June 17, 1966, Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, then at the height of his career as a professional middleweight boxer, and his friend, young John Artis, walked into the Lafayette Grill in Paterson, New Jersey, and blasted away with a shotgun and .32 caliber pistol, killing two men and a woman. Another man, shot through the head, miraculously survived.
