Book excerpt: Muprey Diablo is a man caught in a world of destruction, fighting his inner demons, friends, and enemies. It’s been twenty-five years since he has opened up his memory bank and revealed secrets that may cause him to lose the lavish lifestyle that he has become accustomed to. Feeling rejected by his father, remorse for his mother and a half-sister that vowed to get severe revenge for the loss of the only love and being forced to raise their child on her own. Muprey can’t escape from the past. It only hurts his future. His views are in plain sight, so you can visualize his pictures in words. I must confess, this book is not for everybody. Some of the situations that takes place are inspired by true events, and you should not judge the wild because you are so domesticated. This book sheds light on a careless man and woman and their kids that suffer the consequences for their action while he is at war with drug lord and Jamaican Gargamels. The deposits he made in his memory bank will cloud his judgement and ambush his future. For every action, there is a reaction, that sets off a domino effect that he cannot control. Muprey Diablo: Blood Ink on Concrete is a mind-bending, action-packed thriller.

Book Victorian Poets and the Changing Bible

Download or read book Victorian Poets and the Changing Bible written by Charles LaPorte and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2011-11-17 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorian Poets and the Changing Bible charts the impact of post-Enlightenment biblical criticism on English literary culture. The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries saw a widespread reevaluation of biblical inspiration, in which the Bible’s poetic nature came to be seen as an integral part of its religious significance. Understandably, then, many poets who followed this interpretative revolution—including Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Robert Browning, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning—came to reconceive their highest vocational ambitions: if the Bible is essentially poetry, then modern poetry might perform a cultural role akin to that of scripture. This context equally illuminates the aims and achievements of famous Victorian unbelievers such as Arthur Hugh Clough and George Eliot, who also responded enthusiastically to the poetic ideal of an inspired text. Building upon a recent and ongoing reevaluation of religion as a vital aspect of Victorian culture, Charles LaPorte shows the enduring relevance of religion in a period usually associated with its decline. In doing so, he helps to delineate the midcentury shape of a literary dynamic that is generally better understood in Romantic poetry of the earlier part of the century. The poets he examines all wrestled with modern findings about the Bible's fortuitous historical composition, yet they owed much of their extraordinary literary success to their ability to capitalize upon the progress of avant-garde biblical interpretation. This book's revisionary and provocative thesis speaks not only to the course of English poetics but also to the logic of nineteenth-century literary hierarchies and to the continuing evolution of religion in the modern era. • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book The Great William written by Theodore Leinwand and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great William is the first book to explore how seven renowned writers—Samuel Taylor Coleridge, John Keats, Virginia Woolf, Charles Olson, John Berryman, Allen Ginsberg, and Ted Hughes—wrestled with Shakespeare in the very moments when they were reading his work. What emerges is a constellation of remarkable intellectual and emotional encounters. Theodore Leinwand builds impressively detailed accounts of these writers’ experiences through their marginalia, lectures, letters, journals, and reading notes. We learn why Woolf associated reading Shakespeare with her brother Thoby, and what Ginsberg meant when referring to the mouth feel of Shakespeare’s verse. From Hughes’s attempts to find a “skeleton key” to all of Shakespeare’s plays to Berryman’s tormented efforts to edit King Lear, Leinwand reveals the palpable energy and conviction with which these seven writers engaged with Shakespeare, their moments of utter self-confidence and profound vexation. In uncovering these intense public and private reactions, The Great William connects major writers’ hitherto unremarked scenes of reading Shakespeare with our own.

Book excerpt: "This book is perfect." —Hadley Freeman, The Guardian A funny, tender, and wickedly insightful look at a young woman's forays into love, work, and friendship over the course of 25 years Nothing comes easily to Sophie Applebaum, the black sheep of her family trying to blend in with the herd. Uneasily situated between two brothers, Sophie first appears as the fulcrum and observer of her clan in "Boss of the World." Then, at college, in "The Toy Bar," she faces a gauntlet of challenges as Best Friend to the dramatic and beautiful Venice Lambourne, curator of "perfect things." In her early twenties, Sophie is dazzled by the possibilities of New York City during the Selectric typewriter era—only to land solidly back in Surrey, PA after her father's death. The Wonder Spot follows Sophie's quest for her own identity—who she is, what she loves, whom she loves, and occasionally whom she feels others should love—over the course of 25 years. In an often-disappointing world, Sophie listens closely to her own heart. And when she experiences her 'Aha!' moments—her own personal wonder spots—it's the real thing. In this tremendous follow-up to her runaway bestseller, The Girls' Guide To Hunting And Fishing, Bank returns with her signature combination of devilishly self-deprecating humor, and again shares her vast talent for capturing a moment, taking it to heart, and giving it back to her readers.

Most people have assumed that since Judaism seems to consist of a specific historical revelation and a specific tradition, that an idea such as natural law is foreign to it. This book shows that natural law is part of Judaism, and that it is consistent with its specific revelation and tradition.
