This book was released on 2007 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes a measurement of the rate ofnuclear muon capture by the proton, performed by the MuCap Collaborationusing a new technique based on a time projection chamber operating inultraclean, deuterium-depleted hydrogen gas at room temperature and 1 MPapressure. The hydrogen target's low gas density of 1 percent compared toliquid hydrogen is key to avoiding uncertainties that arise from theformation of muonic molecules. The capture rate was obtained from thedifference between the ?- disappearance rate in hydrogen--as determinedfrom data collected in the experiment's first physics run in fall2004--and the world averagefor the ?+ decay rate. After combining theresults of my analysis with the results from another independent analysisof the 2004 data, the muon capture rate from the hyperfine singlet groundstate of the mu-p atom is found to be ?S = 725.0 ± 17.4 1/s, fromwhich the induced pseudoscalar coupling of the nucleon, gP(q2 = -0.88m$2top{μ}$)= 7.3 ± 1.1, is extracted. This result for gP is consistent withtheoretical predictions that are based on the approximate chiral symmetryof QCD.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises a collection of invited papers presented at the interna tional symposium "The Future of Muon Physics", May 7-9 1991, at the Ruprecht Karls-Universitat in Heidelberg. In the inspiring atmosphere of the Internationales Wissenschaftsforum researchers working worldwide at universities and at many inter national accelerator centers came together to review the present status of the field and to discuss the future directions in muon physics. The muon, charged lepton of the second generation, was first oberved some sixty years ago~ Despite many efforts since, the reason for its existence still remains a secret to the scientific community challenging both theorists and experimentalists. In modern physics the muon plays a key role in many topics of research. Atomic physics with negative muons provides excellent tests of the theory of quantum electrodynamics and of the electro-weak interaction and probes nuclear properties. The. purely leptonic hydrogen-like muonium atom allows tests of fun damental laws in physics and the determination of precise values for fundamental constants. New measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon will probe the renormalizability of the weak interaction and will be sensitive to physics beyond the standard model. The muon decay is the most carefully studied weak process. Searches for rare decay modes of muons and for the conversion of muonium to antimuonium examine the lepton number conservation laws and new speculative theories. Nuclear muon capture addresses fundamental questions like tests of the CPT theorem.

Book Measurement of the Rate of Muon Capture in Hydrogen Gas and Determination of the Proton s Pseudoscalar Coupling

Download or read book Measurement of the Rate of Muon Capture in Hydrogen Gas and Determination of the Proton s Pseudoscalar Coupling written by Steven Michael Clayton and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2007 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A measurement is presented of the rate ΛS of ordinary muon capture on the proton from the singlet mup atomic state. Negative muons were stopped in a time projection chamber operating on ultrapure, deuterium-depleted hydrogen gas at 10 bar and room temperature. Under these conditions molecular formation amounts to a small correction, and ambiguity in the interpretation due to a poorly-known molecular transition rate is avoided. The disappearance rate of the negative muons was determined from the time spectrum of their decay electrons. After some small corrections, the difference of this rate from the world average positive muon (inverse) lifetime is attributed to ΛS. The result is ΛS = 725.0 +/- 13.7 stat +/- 10.7syst s-1, which determines the proton's pseudoscalar coupling to be gP( q2 = -0.88m2m ) = 7.3 +/- 1.1, consistent with theoretical predictions based on chiral perturbation theory. This is the final result of the analysis of data accumulated by the MuCap collaboration in their 2004 experimental running period.

Book Muon catalyzed Fusion Effects in the Precision Measurement of Muon Capture on the Deuteron

Download or read book Muon catalyzed Fusion Effects in the Precision Measurement of Muon Capture on the Deuteron written by Michael H. Murray and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MuSun experiment will measure the rate of muon capture on the deuteron to 1.5~\% precision. This reaction is related to solar $pp$ fusion and the $\nu d$ scattering reaction at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory through effective field theories like chiral perturbation theory. The Gamow-Teller transition in all of these processes contains a single unknown low-energy constant that determines the strength of the axial coupling to the two-nucleon system. Muon capture on the deuteron provides a precise and theoretically clean determination of this low-energy constant. The capture rate is determined by comparing the free muon lifetime to a 10~ppm measurement of the lifetime of negative muons stopped in a deuterium target. MuSun achieves this precision by tracking muons with a cryogenic time-projection chamber to ensure they stop in deuterium. This dissertation characterizes and quantifies a systematic measurement error known as fusion interference, which is a class of tracking error caused by muon-catalyzed fusion reactions following the muon stop. An efficiency difference between events with and without fusion leads to a non-exponential decay time distribution and causes a shift in the measured lifetime. The design and operation of the MuSun experiment and the data analysis procedures are summarized. A formalism is developed to describe the parameters of fusion interference and a correction procedure based on a specialized muon tracking algorithm is presented.
