Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins the comparative study of U.S. urban development during the first half of the 19th century. Breathtaking in its comprehensiveness, its survey and comparisons of early urban politics is without parallel. The study is based on a thorough examination of fifteen cities—Albany, Baltimore, Boston, Brooklyn, Buffalo, Charleston, Cincinnati, Louisville, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Providence, St. Louis, and Washington. This group of cities—the fifteen largest in 1850—provides a good mix of northern and southern, eastern and western, old and new, and fast- and slow-growing urban centers. This volume deals with the city as a corporate entity and contains chapters on urban governmental structures, government finance, politics and elections, urban political leadership, the city plan and city planning, intergovernmental relations, and urban mercantilism.

Book excerpt: "A History of the City of Brooklyn and Kings County" is a comprehensive account of the New York City's most populous borough from the time of the discovery of America until the late 19th century. Named after the Dutch village of Breukelen, Brooklyn was an independent incorporated city, and previously an authorized village and town within the provisions of the New York State Constitution, until 1898, when, after a long political campaign and public relations battle during the 1890s, according to the new Municipal Charter of "Greater New York", Brooklyn was consolidated with the other cities, boroughs, and counties to form the modern City of New York. The borough continued, however, to maintain a distinct culture._x000D_ Volume 1:_x000D_ The Region of Brooklyn at the Time of the Discovery_x000D_ Discovery and First Settlements_x000D_ The Indians and the Early Settlers_x000D_ The Beginnings of Breuckelen 1643-1647_x000D_ Domestic and Social Life under the Dutch 1647-1664_x000D_ Kings County after the English Conquest 1665-1700_x000D_ Brooklyn before the Revolution 1701-1775_x000D_ Kings County during the Revolution 1775-1783_x000D_ Volume 2:_x000D_ Brooklyn after the Revolution 1784–1810_x000D_ Brooklyn Village 1811-1833_x000D_ The City of Brooklyn 1834-1860_x000D_ The Period of the Civil War 1861-1865_x000D_ Brooklyn after the War 1866-1876_x000D_ The Modern City 1877-1893

Book History of Kings County Including Brooklyn from 1683 to 1883

Download or read book History of Kings County Including Brooklyn from 1683 to 1883 written by Henry Reed Stiles and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-12 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the authoritative work on the History of Brooklyn from the first discovery and the Colonial Period up until 1884 when this book was published. It is not to be confused at all with another work "History of Brooklyn" published in three volumes in 1867. The two books are completely different although both are by the same author. Henry Reed Stiles was a physician who wrote a number of highly regarded historical records and genealogical books during the late 18th and early 19th century. As a doctor, he served in various medical positions primarily in New York City. He was interested in genealogical and historical research. In May, 1863 Stiles was one of the founders of the Long Island Historical Society, and he became a director and its first librarian. In 1865, he was an active member of the Faust Club which published limited editions of Wood's History of Long Island, and of Farman's Notes on Brooklyn, N. Y. In 1865 he issued a limited edition of two volumes describing to the condition and experiences of prison ship captives in Wallabout Bay, under the title of The Wallabout Prisonship Series, and also edited The Genealogy of the Stranahan and Josslyn Families. He helped to organize the American Anthropological Society in 1869, and was one of the seven founders of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, serving as its president from 1869 until 1873. After his full retirement in 1901, he devoted all his time to completing and preparing for publication of The History of Ancient Wethersfield, Connecticut. Stiles was described upon his death as having "made it possible for thousands to trace their ancestry to the founders of our American Government and to honored names in the older governments of the world." Stiles wrote a number of books and also contributed numerous articles to magazines, newspapers, and genealogical publications.
