Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As recently as the 1880s, most American cities had no effective means of collecting and removing the mountains of garbage, refuse, and manure-over a thousand tons a day in New York City alone-that clogged streets and overwhelmed the senses of residents. In his landmark study, Garbage in the Cities, Martin Melosi offered the first history of efforts begun in the Progressive Era to clean up this mess.Since it was first published, Garbage in the Cities has remained one of the best historical treatments of the subject. This thoroughly revised and updated edition includes two new chapters that expand the discussion of developments since World War I. It also offers a discussion of the reception of the first edition, and an examination of the ways solid waste management has become more federally regulated in the last quarter of the twentieth century.Melosi traces the rise of sanitation engineering, accurately describes the scope and changing nature of the refuse problem in U.S. cities, reveals the sometimes hidden connections between industrialization and pollution, and discusses the social agendas behind many early cleanliness programs. Absolutely essential reading for historians, policy analysts, and sociologists, Garbage in the Cities offers a vibrant and insightful analysis of this fascinating topic.

Book Collection and Disposal of Municipal Refuse Classic Reprint

Download or read book Collection and Disposal of Municipal Refuse Classic Reprint written by Rudolph Hering and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collection and Disposal of Municipal Refuse The recent development in America started in 1887, by the American Public Health Association, with the appointment of a Committee on Garbage Disposal, of which Dr. Kilvington was Chairman. In 1888, this Committee reported on the Destruction of Organic Refuse by fire. In 1889, a report was presented favoring both reduction and incineration as the promising methods of future garbage disposal. In 1894, Rudolph Hering was appointed Chairman, elaborate statistics were collected from more than a hundred cities, and in 1897 a report was made on the collection and disposal of waste matter in many of these cities, with general conclusions regarding the entire problem. A great diversity of opinion was observed regarding the proper methods to be pursued. The Committee also studied the English experiences and the very complete, instructive, and valuable experiments just then being conducted in Hamburg and Berlin, and presented conclusions which endeavored to place the whole subject on a scientific foundation. The sanitary aspect was given the first and the financial aspect the second place in all recommendations. It was pointed out that a proper solution for any city or town would require a knowledge of the quantity, character, and composition of the refuse, and also of the local conditions controlling the several parts of the problem. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resisting Garbage presents a new approach to understanding practices of waste removal and recycling in American cities, one that is grounded in the close observation of case studies while being broadly applicable to many American cities today. Most current waste practices in the United States, Lily Baum Pollans argues, prioritize sanitation and efficiency while allowing limited post-consumer recycling as a way to quell consumers’ environmental anxiety. After setting out the contours of this “weak recycling waste regime,” Pollans zooms in on the very different waste management stories of Seattle and Boston over the last forty years. While Boston’s local politics resulted in a waste-export program with minimal recycling, Seattle created new frameworks for thinking about consumption, disposal, and the roles that local governments and ordinary people can play as partners in a project of resource stewardship. By exploring how these two approaches have played out at the national level, Resisting Garbage provides new avenues for evaluating municipal action and fostering practices that will create environmentally meaningful change.

Book Recycling from Municipal Refuse

Download or read book Recycling from Municipal Refuse written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is in two parts: a concise state-of-the-art overview of recycling from municipal refuse, focusing on techniques and conditions germane to developing countries; and an annotated bibliography with abstracts of more than 200 published references on recycling. It was prepared as part of a global research, development and demonstration effort of the United Nations Development Programme and the World Bank. Recycling is used in its broadest sense, encompassing the full range of resource recovery and reuse techniques, including repair, remanufacture, materials recovery and energy conversion of refuse materials, broken machine parts, and discarded consumer products. The philosophy behind the report is that some of the value added from production activities, such as agriculture, mining and manufacture, is retained when a "waste" is recycled. Thus, through recycling, more sustainable economies, for countries and cities, are achievable. The state-of-the-art overview contains numerous case examples of recycling efforts throughout the world. It provides insight into the informal network of relationships and incentives that affect recyling.

Book excerpt: “A galvanizing exposé” of America’s trash problem from plastic in the ocean to “wasteful packaging, bogus recycling, and flawed landfills and incinerators” (Booklist, starred review). Eat a take-out meal, buy a pair of shoes, or read a newspaper, and you’re soon faced with a bewildering amount of garbage. The United States is the planet’s number-one producer of trash. Each American throws out 4.5 pounds daily. But garbage is also a global problem. Today, the Pacific Ocean contains six times more plastic waste than zooplankton. How did we end up with this much rubbish, and where does it all go? Journalist and filmmaker Heather Rogers answers these questions by taking readers on a grisly and fascinating tour through the underworld of garbage. Gone Tomorrow excavates the history of rubbish handling from the nineteenth century to the present, pinpointing the roots of today’s waste-addicted society. With a “lively authorial voice,” Rogers draws connections between modern industrial production, consumer culture, and our throwaway lifestyle (New York Press). She also investigates the politics of recycling and the export of trash to poor countries, while offering a potent argument for change. “A clear-thinking and peppery writer, Rogers presents a galvanizing exposé of how we became the planet’s trash monsters. . . . [Gone Tomorrow] details everything that is wrong with today’s wasteful packaging, bogus recycling, and flawed landfills and incinerators. . . . Rogers exhibits black-belt precision.” —Booklist, starred review
