Book Mummies Temples and Tombs

Download or read book Mummies Temples and Tombs written by Clive Dickinson and published by HarperCollins Children's Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published to accompany Wall-to-Wall's thrilling, live-action TV series Ancient Egyptians, this entertaining book vividly brings to life the stories of five fascinating people who lived in Egypt over 2,000 years ago, as recorded on original papyrus documents or etched in stone. The individuals whose lives are so vividly recounted include the royal sculptor Thutmose, who even today is remembered as creator of one of the best known pieces of ancient Egyptian art - the plaster bust of Nefertiti, the heretic pharaoh Akhenaton's beautiful queen. Then there is Wenamun, the priest who set out on an heroic adventure down the Nile in search of materials to build a sacred barge to the god Amun. His life is graphically described in the autobiography inscribed on his tomb which outlines his thrilling voyage and the trading links and lands through which he travelled. The tale of the young weaver Nakht tells of a short and tragic life. By the time he died aged fifteen, Nakht had suffered both hunger and hard labour. He even had traces of a red powder deep in his lungs - granite - a sure sign of a cruel punishment meted out to him for some minor misdemeanor. Yet there were those that loved him, for his remains show that he had been carefully washed, his face shaved and his nails trimmed before being placed in his final resting place, a wooden coffin that would have cost more than a month's wages. Other tales include those of Weni the palace official, who uncovered a plot to kill the king, and Pharaoh Nectanebo II, last of the Egyptian pharaohs, who sought to protect his realm through magical ritual.

Book Tombs Temples Ancient Art

Download or read book Tombs Temples Ancient Art written by Joseph Lindon Smith and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From book cover: Tombs Temples And Ancient Art: When Joseph Lindon Smith went out to Egypt as a young artist in 1898, archaeology was beginning to uncover some of the fabled treasures of an ancient land. For the next half-century, he devoted himself to the great "finds" as they were excavated from the encroaching sands, depicting them in countless paintings for the leading museums of the world. He became the friend of Flinder Petrie, the greatest of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Egyptologists, and the co-worker of the best-known archaeologists down to 1950; he explored and painted at Petra, Persepolis, Ur Palmyra, and Baalbek; he also did work with Sylvanus Griswold Morley in the ancient Maya centers of America, and painted in the Far East. His personal account of what transpired under his eyes and of the chronology and relations of ancient art over a wide area is at once exciting narrative and important history. The many illustrations chosen from his painting provide visual accompaniment to his story of classical civilizations and reveal the literal quality of his own art, which has in notable instances preserved for us the likeness of things that have since crumbled or faded on exposure to light and air after being buried for centuries. Tombs, Temples, And Ancient Art gains strength for its informality, for while the initiated will discover facts and interpretations of high importance to science, all readers will recognize in it the work of a man alive to adventure.

Book the valley of the golden mummies

Download or read book the valley of the golden mummies written by zahi hawass and published by American Univ in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astonishing discovery of the Valley of the Golden Mummies in Bahariya Oasis, deep in the Western Desert of Egypt, is considered perhaps the most spectacular Egyptian archeological discovery since that of Tutankhamun's tomb. This vast site was uncovered by accident, when a donkey stumbled into the opening of one of the many underground tombs of a 2,000-year-old cemetery believed to cover approximately two square miles. Never before have so many mummies been discovered at a single site: multi-chambered tombs dating from the Roman period in Egypt held rows of mummies, many adorned with gilded masks and painted cases, others wrapped in linen. Whole families were found placed together. Jewelry, pottery, amulets, and other artifacts were also uncovered, and it is estimated that as many as 10,000 mummies may ultimately be uncovered from the site, which has escaped plunderers and is thus remarkably intact. Featuring some 250 color illustrations, most of which have never before been published, this exciting book reveals the lives, customs, and religious beliefs of this until now little-known community. As such, it will both fascinate and enthrall all those with an interest in the ancient history of Egypt.
