Book excerpt: A class of explicit multistage time-stepping schemes with centered spatial differencing and multigrids are considered for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. These schemes are the basis for a family of computer programs (flow codes with multigrid (FLOMG) series) currently used to solve a wide range of fluid dynamics problems, including internal and external flows. In this paper, the components of these multistage time-stepping schemes are defined, discussed, and in many cases analyzed to provide additional insight into their behavior. Special emphasis is given to numerical dissipation, stability of Runge-Kutta schemes, and the convergence acceleration techniques of multigrid and implicit residual smoothing. Both the Baldwin and Lomax algebraic equilibrium model and the Johnson and King one-half equation nonequilibrium model are used to establish turbulence closure. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection from the papers presented at the Fourth European Multigrid Conference, held in Amsterdam, July 6-9,1993. There were 78 registered participants from 14 different countries, and 56 presentations were given. The preceding conferences in this series were held in Cologne (1981, 1985) and in Bonn (1990). Also at the other side of the Atlantic special multigrid conferences are held regularly, at intervals of two years, always in Copper Mountain, Colorado, US. The Sixth Copper Mountain Conference on Multigrid Methods took place in April, 1993. Circumstances prevented us from putting a larger time interval between the Copper and Amsterdam meetings. The next European meeting is planned in 1996, a year later than the next Copper Meeting. When the first multigrid conference was held in 1981 there was no doubt about the usefulness of a conference dedicated specially to multigrid, because multigrid was a new and relatively unexplored subject, still in a pioneering stage, and pursued by specialists. The past twenty years have shown a rapid growth in theoretical understanding, useful applications and widespread acceptance of multi grid in the applied disciplines. Hence, one might ask whether there is still a need today for conferences specially dedicated to multigrid. The general consensus is that the answer is affirmative. New issues have arisen that are best addressed or need also be addressed from a special multigrid point of view.

Book excerpt: A multilevel method for the solution of systems of equations generated by stabilized Finite Element discretizations of the Euler and Navier Stokes equations on generalized unstructured grids is described. The method is based on an elemental agglomeration multigrid which produces a hierarchical sequence of coarse subspaces. Linear combinations of the basis functions from a given space form the next subspace and the use of the Galerkin Coarse Grid Approximation (GCA) within an Algebraic Multigrid (AMG) context properly defines the hierarchical sequence. The multigrid coarse spaces constructed by the elemental agglomeration algorithm are based on a semi-coarsening scheme designed to reduce grid anisotropy. The multigrid transfer operators are induced by the graph of the coarse space mesh and proper consideration is given to the boundary conditions for an accurate representation of the coarse space operators. A generalized line implicit relaxation scheme is also described where the lines are constructed to follow the direction of strongest coupling. The solution algorithm is motivated by the decomposition of the system characteristics into acoustic and convective modes. Analysis of the application of elemental agglomeration AMG (AMGe) to stabilized numerical schemes shows that a characteristic length based rescaling of the numerical stabilization is necessary for a consistent multigrid representation.
