However, traditional loss network models for telephone networks cannot cope with today's heterogeneous demands, the central attribute of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. This requires multiservice loss models. This publication presents mathematical tools for the analysis, optimization and design of multiservice loss networks. These tools are relevant to modern broadband networks, including ATM networks. Addressed are networks with both fixed and alternative routing, and with discrete and continuous bandwidth requirements. Multiservice interconnection networks for switches and contiguous slot assignment for synchronous transfer mode are also presented.

"High Performance" is one of those terms. High Performance can be viewed as synonymous to High Speed or Low Latency or a number of other characteristics. The interesting thing is that such ambiguity can sometimes be useful in a world where focus shifts quite easily from one issue to another as times and needs evolve. Many things have changed since the first HPN conference held in Aachen, Germany in 1987. The focus then was mainly on Media Access Control (MAC) protocols that allow users to share the high bandwidth of optical fiber. FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) was making its debut with its amazing 100 Mbps speed. ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) and SONET (the Synchronous Optical Network) were beginning to capture our imagination. What could users possibly do with such "high performance"? Share it! After realizing that the real problems had gradually shifted away from the network media to the periphery of the network, focus also began to shift. Adapter design, protocol implementation, and communication systems architecture began to attract our interest. Networking -not Networks-became the hot issue.

This situation has generated a great interest in the development of te- niques for the provision of quality of service (QoS) guarantees in IP networks. Two proposals have already emerged from the IETF groups IntServ and Di?- Serv, but research and experiments are continuing, in order to identify the most e?ective architectures and protocols. The Italian Ministry for University and Scienti?c Research has been funding a research program on these topics, named “Techniques for quality of service guarantees in multiservice telecommunication networks” or MQOS for short, in the years 1999 and 2000. At the end of its activity, the MQOS program has organized in Rome (Italy) in January 2001 the International Workshop on QoS in Multiserevice IP N- works (QoS-IP 2001), for the presentation of high-quality recent research results on QoS in IP networks, and the dissemination of the most relevant research results obtained within the MQOS program.

To ensure proper network design and engineering, designers of wireless networks need to understand and address issues such as radio propagation, antenna, interference management, multiaccess, mobility, teletraffic, signalling and networking protocols. In fact, not only do these issues need to be understood and addressed, their interdependence and interactions also deserve to be examined closely. Therefore, the goal of this workshop is to present papers addressing these issues, with the hope of stimulating further collaboration among researchers of various disciplines in wireless communications. High-speed wireless networks such as wireless ATM and GSM with high-speed data services continue to attract much research and development efforts. The major challenges on the physical and link layers in these networks include radio design, interference management, resource allocation and multiaccess protocol. Several papers on these issues are presented here. As the availability of radio spectrum is limited, there is always a desire to ''maximize'' the spectral efficiency, for example, by diligent (and perhaps dynamic) re-use of frequency and cell layout, while guaranteeing a certain quality of service (QoS). A number of papers at this workshop address these topics.

Book excerpt: The exponential growth of Internet brings to focus the need to control such large scale networks so that they appear as coherent, almost intelligent, organ isms. It is a challenge to regulate such a complex network of heterogeneous elements with dynamically changing traffic conditions. To make such a sys tem reliable and manageable, the decision making should be decentralized. It is desirable to find simple local rules and strategies that can produce coherent and purposeful global behavior. Furthermore, these control mechanisms must be adaptive to effectively respond to continually varying network conditions. Such adaptive, distributed, localized mechanisms would provide a scalable so lution for controlling large networks. The need for such schemes arises in a variety of settings. In this monograph, we focus on localized approach to quality of service routing. Routing in the current Internet focuses primarily on connectivity and typi cally supports only the "best-effort" datagram service. The routing protocols deployed such as OSPF use the shortest path only routing paradigm, where routing is optimized for a single metric such as hop count or administrative weight. While these protocols are well suited for traditional data applications such as ftp and telnet, they are not adequate for many emerging applications such as IP telephony, video on demand and teleconferencing, which require stringent delay and bandwidth guarantees. The "shortest paths" chosen for the "best effort" service may not have sufficient resources to provide the requisite service for these applications.

Book excerpt: This book provides a novel method based on advantages of mobility model of Low Earth Orbit Mobile Satellite System LEO MSS which allows the evaluation of instant of subsequent handover of a MS even if its location is unknown. This method is then utilized to propose two prioritized handover schemes, Pseudo Last Useful Instant PLUI strategy and Dynamic Channel Reservation DCR-like scheme based respectively on LUI and DCR schemes, previously proposed in literature. The authors also approach a different aspect of handover problem: calls with short durations dropped due to a handover failure. We propose a decision system based on fuzzy logic Rescuing System that allows the rescue of calls with short durations facing a premature at the expense of those lasting for long durations.
