Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One common feature of new emerging technologies is the fusion of the very small (nano) scale and the large scale engineering. The classical environment provided by single scale theories, as for instance by the classical hydrodynamics, is not anymore satisfactory. The main challenge is to keep the important details while still be able to keep the overall picture and simplicity. It is the thermodynamics that addresses this challenge. Our main reason for writing this book is to explain such general viewpoint of thermodynamics and to illustrate it on a very wide range of examples. Contents Levels of description Hamiltonian mechanics Irreversible evolution Reversible and irreversible evolution Multicomponent systems Contact geometry Appendix: Mathematical aspects

Book An Introduction to multiscale modeling with applications

Download or read book An Introduction to multiscale modeling with applications written by Pietro Asinari and published by Società Editrice Esculapio. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects the slides prepared for the course of Advanced Engineering Thermodynamics (Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering) and those for the course of Multiscale Modelling and Simulation of Molecular and Mesoscopic Dynamics (PhD Program in Energetics), taught in English at Turin Polytechnic. Here, we provide a broad overview on the different topics taught in our classes. Even though not all topics are presented in the same class, students should be able to more easily reconstruct the connections among different phenomena (and scales), build their own mind map and, eventually, find their own way of deepening the subjects they are more interested in. Several engineering applications have been included. This helps in stressing that very different phenomena are described by transport theory and obey the same underlying fundamental laws of engineering thermodynamics. Detailed tutorials are reported, based on open-source codes for the laboratories (Gromacs, Palabos, OpenFoam and Cantera).

  • Author : Ellad B. Tadmor
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2011-11-24
  • ISBN : 1139500651
  • Pages : 789 pages

Download or read book Modeling Materials written by Ellad B. Tadmor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-24 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Material properties emerge from phenomena on scales ranging from Angstroms to millimeters, and only a multiscale treatment can provide a complete understanding. Materials researchers must therefore understand fundamental concepts and techniques from different fields, and these are presented in a comprehensive and integrated fashion for the first time in this book. Incorporating continuum mechanics, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, atomistic simulations and multiscale techniques, the book explains many of the key theoretical ideas behind multiscale modeling. Classical topics are blended with new techniques to demonstrate the connections between different fields and highlight current research trends. Example applications drawn from modern research on the thermo-mechanical properties of crystalline solids are used as a unifying focus throughout the text. Together with its companion book, Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics (Cambridge University Press, 2011), this work presents the complete fundamentals of materials modeling for graduate students and researchers in physics, materials science, chemistry and engineering.

Book Multiscale Thermal Transport in Energy Systems

Download or read book Multiscale Thermal Transport in Energy Systems written by Yuwen Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2016-09 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During energy utilization and conversion, thermal energy is either an intermediate product or a byproduct; that is, thermal transport plays a critical role on efficiency, reliability, and safety of the energy systems. Recent development in nanotechnologies enabled significant improvement of the thermal energy storage performance, fuel cell, battery and thermoelectric devices. To meet the ever increasing challenges posed by energy systems, innovative and transformative measures must be taken to significantly improve the performance of these devices. Such measures will not be possible without a thorough understanding of thermal transport at molecular, nano-and microscale levels because physical phenomena occurring at the molecular, nano- and microscale will have profound effects on the performance at the system level. Understanding of multiscale thermal transport in the energy system is essential to improve their performance.

Book Entropy and Non Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics

Download or read book Entropy and Non Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics written by Antonio M. Scarfone and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonequilibrium statistical mechanics has a long history featuring diverse aspects. It has been a major research field in physics and will remain so in the future. Even regarding the concept of entropy, there exists a longstanding problem concerning its definition for a system in a state far from equilibrium. In this Special Issue, we offered the possibility to discuss and present up-to-date problems that were not necessarily restricted to statistical mechanics. Theoretical and experimental papers are both presented, in addition to unifying research works. As the entropy itself is the central element of nonequilibrium processes, papers discuss various formulations of the second law and its consequences. In this Special Issue, recent progress in kinetic approaches to hydrodynamics, rational extended thermodynamics, entropy in a strongly nonequilibrium stationary state, and related topics are reported as both review articles as well as original research works.

Book Non Fourier Heat Conduction

Download or read book Non Fourier Heat Conduction written by Alexander I. Zhmakin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-01 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a broad and well-structured overview of various non-Fourier heat conduction models. The classical Fourier heat conduction model is valid for most macroscopic problems. However, it fails when the wave nature of the heat propagation becomes dominant and memory or non-local spatial effects become significant; e.g., during ultrafast heating, heat transfer at the nanoscale, in granular and porous materials, at extremely high values of the heat flux, or in heat transfer in biological tissues. The book looks at numerous non-Fourier heat conduction models that incorporate time non-locality for materials with memory, such as hereditary materials, including fractional hereditary materials, and/or spatial non-locality, i.e. materials with a non-homogeneous inner structure. Beginning with an introduction to classical transport theory, including phase-lag, phonon, and thermomass models, the book then looks at various aspects of relativistic and quantum transport, including approaches based on the Landauer formalism as well as the Green-Kubo theory of linear response. Featuring an appendix that provides an introduction to methods in fractional calculus, this book is a valuable resource for any researcher interested in theoretical and numerical aspects of complex, non-trivial heat conduction problems.

Book Multiscale Methods in Science and Engineering

Download or read book Multiscale Methods in Science and Engineering written by Björn Engquist and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiscale problems naturally pose severe challenges for computational science and engineering. The smaller scales must be well resolved over the range of the larger scales.
