Book Multiscale Problems in Science and Technology

Download or read book Multiscale Problems in Science and Technology written by Nenad Antonic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International conference on Multiscale problems in science and technol ogy; Challenges to mathematical analysis and applications brought together mathematicians working on multiscale techniques (homogenisation, singular perturbation) and specialists from applied sciences who use these techniques. Our idea was that mathematicians could contribute to solving problems in the emerging applied disciplines usually overlooked by them and that specialists from applied sciences could pose new challenges for multiscale problems. Numerous problems in natural sciences contain multiple scales: flows in complex heterogeneous media, many particles systems, composite media, etc. Mathematically, we are led to study of singular homogenisation limits and the procedure is called upscaling or homogenisation. The processes to be up scaled are usually described by differential equations. For simple cases, when the differential equation is linear and the heterogeneities are periodic some progress has been made. However, most natural phenomena are described by nonlinear differential equations in a random nonhomogeneous medium and, despite an intensive development in recent years, there are many open problems. The objective of the conference was to bring together leading special ists from Europe and the United States and to discuss new challenges in this quickly developing field. Topics of the conference were Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations and Applied Analysis, with direct applications to the modeling in Material Sciences, Petroleum Engineering and Hydrodynamics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides in-depth analyses of vortex dominated flows via matched and multiscale asymptotics, and demonstrates how insight gained through these analyses can be exploited in the construction of robust, efficient, and accurate numerical techniques. The book explores the dynamics of slender vortex filaments in detail, including fundamental derivations, compressible core structure, weakly non-linear limit regimes, and associated numerical methods. Similarly, the volume covers asymptotic analysis and computational techniques for weakly compressible flows involving vortex-generated sound and thermoacoustics. The book is addressed to both graduate students and researchers.

Book Computational Modeling in Biomechanics

Download or read book Computational Modeling in Biomechanics written by Suvranu De and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Availability of advanced computational technology has fundamentally altered the investigative paradigm in the field of biomechanics. Armed with sophisticated computational tools, researchers are seeking answers to fundamental questions by exploring complex biomechanical phenomena at the molecular, cellular, tissue and organ levels. The computational armamentarium includes such diverse tools as the ab initio quantum mechanical and molecular dynamics methods at the atomistic scales and the finite element, boundary element, meshfree as well as immersed boundary and lattice-Boltzmann methods at the continuum scales. Multiscale methods that link various scales are also being developed. While most applications require forward analysis, e.g., finding deformations and stresses as a result of loading, others involve determination of constitutive parameters based on tissue imaging and inverse analysis. This book provides a glimpse of the diverse and important roles that modern computational technology is playing in various areas of biomechanics including biofluids and mass transfer, cardiovascular mechanics, musculoskeletal mechanics, soft tissue mechanics, and biomolecular mechanics.

Book Advances in Mathematical Fluid Mechanics

Download or read book Advances in Mathematical Fluid Mechanics written by Rolf Rannacher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-17 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume celebrates the 60th birthday of Professor Giovanni Paolo Galdi and honors his remarkable contributions to research in the ?eld of Mathematical Fluid Mechanics. The book contains a collection of 35 peer reviewed papers, with authors from 20 countries, re?ecting the worldwide impact and great inspiration by his work over the years. These papers were selected from invited lectures and contributed talks presented at the International Conference on Mathematical Fluid Mechanics held in Estoril, Portugal, May 21–25, 2007 and organized on the oc- sion of Professor Galdi’s 60th birthday. We express our gratitude to all the authors and reviewers for their important contributions. Professor Galdi devotes his career to research on the mathematical analysis of the Navier-Stokes equations and non-Newtonian ?ow problems, with special emphasis on hydrodynamic stability and ?uid-particle interactions, impressing the worldwide mathematical communities with his results. His numerous contributions have laid down signi?cant milestones in these ?elds, with a great in?uence on interdis- plinary research communities. He has advanced the careers of numerous young researchers through his generosity and encouragement, some directly through int- lectual guidance and others indirectly by pairing them with well chosen senior c- laborators. A brief review of Professor Galdi’s activities and some impressions by colleagues and friends are included here.
