Book Problems in Distributions and Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Problems in Distributions and Partial Differential Equations written by C. Zuily and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1988-04-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the theory of distributions, by the use of solved problems. Although written for mathematicians, it can also be used by a wider audience, including engineers and physicists. The first six chapters deal with the classical theory, with special emphasis on the concrete aspects. The reader will find many examples of distributions and learn how to work with them. At the beginning of each chapter the relevant theoretical material is briefly recalled. The last chapter is a short introduction to a very wide and important field in analysis which can be considered as the most natural application of distributions, namely the theory of partial differential equations. It includes exercises on the classical differential operators and on fundamental solutions, hypoellipticity, analytic hypoellipticity, Sobolev spaces, local solvability, the Cauchy problem, etc.

The prerequisites are kept to introductory calculus level so that the book remains accessible at the same time to pure mathematicians (as a smoothand somewhat heuristic introdcution to this theory) and to applied mathematicians, numerical engineers and theoretical physicists (as a tool to treat problems involving products of distributions).

Book Distribution Theory Applied to Differential Equations

Download or read book Distribution Theory Applied to Differential Equations written by Adina Chirilă and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-08 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents important contributions to modern theories concerning the distribution theory applied to convex analysis (convex functions, functions of lower semicontinuity, the subdifferential of a convex function). The authors prove several basic results in distribution theory and present ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations by providing generalized solutions. In addition, the book deals with Sobolev spaces, which presents aspects related to variation problems, such as the Stokes system, the elasticity system and the plate equation. The authors also include approximate formulations of variation problems, such as the Galerkin method or the finite element method. The book is accessible to all scientists, and it is especially useful for those who use mathematics to solve engineering and physics problems. The authors have avoided concepts and results contained in other books in order to keep the book comprehensive. Furthermore, they do not present concrete simplified models and pay maximal attention to scientific rigor.

Book Distributions Partial Differential Equations and Harmonic Analysis

Download or read book Distributions Partial Differential Equations and Harmonic Analysis written by Dorina Mitrea and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-29 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to offer, in a concise, rigorous, and largely self-contained manner, a rapid introduction to the theory of distributions and its applications to partial differential equations and harmonic analysis. The book is written in a format suitable for a graduate course spanning either over one-semester, when the focus is primarily on the foundational aspects, or over a two-semester period that allows for the proper amount of time to cover all intended applications as well. It presents a balanced treatment of the topics involved, and contains a large number of exercises (upwards of two hundred, more than half of which are accompanied by solutions), which have been carefully chosen to amplify the effect, and substantiate the power and scope, of the theory of distributions. Graduate students, professional mathematicians, and scientifically trained people with a wide spectrum of mathematical interests will find this book to be a useful resource and complete self-study guide. Throughout, a special effort has been made to develop the theory of distributions not as an abstract edifice but rather give the reader a chance to see the rationale behind various seemingly technical definitions, as well as the opportunity to apply the newly developed tools (in the natural build-up of the theory) to concrete problems in partial differential equations and harmonic analysis, at the earliest opportunity. The main additions to the current, second edition, pertain to fundamental solutions (through the inclusion of the Helmholtz operator, the perturbed Dirac operator, and their iterations) and the theory of Sobolev spaces (built systematically from the ground up, exploiting natural connections with the Fourier Analysis developed earlier in the monograph).

Book Distribution Theory and Transform Analysis

Download or read book Distribution Theory and Transform Analysis written by A.H. Zemanian and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distribution theory, a relatively recent mathematical approach to classical Fourier analysis, not only opened up new areas of research but also helped promote the development of such mathematical disciplines as ordinary and partial differential equations, operational calculus, transformation theory, and functional analysis. This text was one of the first to give a clear explanation of distribution theory; it combines the theory effectively with extensive practical applications to science and engineering problems. Based on a graduate course given at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, this book has two objectives: to provide a comparatively elementary introduction to distribution theory and to describe the generalized Fourier and Laplace transformations and their applications to integrodifferential equations, difference equations, and passive systems. After an introductory chapter defining distributions and the operations that apply to them, Chapter 2 considers the calculus of distributions, especially limits, differentiation, integrations, and the interchange of limiting processes. Some deeper properties of distributions, such as their local character as derivatives of continuous functions, are given in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 introduces the distributions of slow growth, which arise naturally in the generalization of the Fourier transformation. Chapters 5 and 6 cover the convolution process and its use in representing differential and difference equations. The distributional Fourier and Laplace transformations are developed in Chapters 7 and 8, and the latter transformation is applied in Chapter 9 to obtain an operational calculus for the solution of differential and difference equations of the initial-condition type. Some of the previous theory is applied in Chapter 10 to a discussion of the fundamental properties of certain physical systems, while Chapter 11 ends the book with a consideration of periodic distributions. Suitable for a graduate course for engineering and science students or for a senior-level undergraduate course for mathematics majors, this book presumes a knowledge of advanced calculus and the standard theorems on the interchange of limit processes. A broad spectrum of problems has been included to satisfy the diverse needs of various types of students.

Book The Mellin Transformation and Fuchsian Type Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book The Mellin Transformation and Fuchsian Type Partial Differential Equations written by Zofia Szmydt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a systematic introduction to the theory of the multidimensional Mellin transformation in a distributional setting. In contrast to the classical texts on the Mellin and Laplace transformations, this work concentrates on the local properties of the Mellin transforms, i.e. on those properties of the Mellin transforms of distributions u which are preserved under multiplication of u by cut-off functions (of various types). The main part of the book is devoted to the local study of regularity of solutions to linear Fuchsian partial differential operators on a corner, which demonstrates the appearance of non-discrete asymptotic expansions (at the vertex) and of resurgence effects in the spirit of J. Ecalle. The book constitutes a part of a program to use the Mellin transformation as a link between the theory of second micro-localization, resurgence theory and the theory of the generalized Borel transformation. Chapter I contains the basic theorems and definitions of the theory of distributions and Fourier transformations which are used in the succeeding chapters. This material includes proofs which are partially transformed into exercises with hints. Chapter II presents a systematic treatment of the Mellin transform in several dimensions. Chapter III is devoted to Fuchsian-type singular differential equations. For researchers and graduate students interested in differential equations and integral transforms. This book can also be recommended as a graduate text for students of mathematics and engineering.
