Book Multiple Primary Malignant Neoplasms

Download or read book Multiple Primary Malignant Neoplasms written by Bruce S. Schoenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When asked why he robbed banks, an astute and success ful criminal is said to have replied "Because that's where the money is kept." Why study patients with multiple primary cancers? The answer follows the same practical approach. Because the intensive investigation of such patients is very likely to yield data useful to both the clinical and research on cologist. Studies of this problem provide an immediate return for the clinician responsible for the care of cancer patients. With improved forms of therapy, these individuals are enjoying longer periods of survival. One important factor in maintaining increased survival is the early detection and treatment of new primary tumors which may develop. Analyses of multiple primary malignancies serve as a guide to the probable anatomic location of a subsequent primary and help define characteristics of the individual at high risk for multiple primary cancer. But just as treatment may improve the life of the cancer patient, it may also increase the risk of a subsequent malignancy. Studies of multiple primaries provide an efficient means for quantifying potentially harmful effects of current therapeutic modalities.

Book The History of Cancer

Download or read book The History of Cancer written by James S. Olson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1989-06-26 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian James. S. Olson has prepared a comprehensive, annotated bibliography of the history of cancer. The emphasis of this work is not so much on the medical aspects of cancer as it is on the historical documentation of the disease: its etiology, pathology, epidemiology, forms and manifestations, and the men and women who have distinguished themselves in the study and treatment of the disease. The book opens with a section devoted to the historical background of our knowledge of cancer and important medical/nonmedical personalities. The next section deals with the etiology of cancer--its genesis, epidemiology, pathology, and research and control. The largest part of the bibliography is devoted to the individual malignant diseases. Olson concludes with sections on the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, clinical services, and cancer institutions. The citations include books, articles from scholarly and general periodicals, medical and government publications, and primary and secondary sources. The annotations are descriptive. An important contribution to the study of medical history, Olson's bibliography will be of interest to scholars, students and those involved in the medical and scientific study of cancer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cell culture based research is important for our understanding of biological processes at the cellular and molecular level. Using this approach, the previous decades have produced a wealth of mechanistic information in all areas of biomedical research. Such in vitro research, however, lacks the complexity of in vivo investigations, where many different cell types interact with each other in a normal, three-dimensional environment, with normal levels of cytokines and growth factors. Furthermore, complex human diseases, such as cancer, diabetes or chronic inflammation, can only be modeled in vivo. Due to its small size, its short reproduction time, and the possibility to introduce specific gene mutations, the mouse has become the favourite mammalian model organism to study in vivo function of genes during development and in disease. This book combines review articles on selected subjects presented at the symposium “Mouse as a Model Organism – From Animals to Cells”, held in Rovaniemi, Finland, 2009. Among other topics, high-throughput phenotyping of mouse mutants, mouse phenotypes dependent on nature and nuture, and a spectrum of in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro methods to study cancer in mice are described. This book will give an excellent introduction to scientists interested in the use of mice as a model to understand complex biological questions in the post-genomic era. It will highlight the possibilities, but also discuss the current problems and shortcomings, to give a realistic view of the current state-of-art in this fascinating field of biomedical research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 20 years, endometrial carcinoma has continued to increase in frequency and it is quite possible that this carcinoma will become the major gynecologic malignancy in the future. For many years, endometrial carcinoma was considered less malignant than other gynecologic malignancies, simple hysterectomy and bil ateral salpingo-oophorectomy or surgery combined with radiation being effective in certain circumstances. It is unfortunate to note that the global 5-year survival rate for patients with advanced or recurrent endometrial carcinoma has improved only slightly. Therefore any complacency regarding this 'benign malignancy' should be reconsidered. There is a growing awareness of the nature of end ometrial carcinoma, with advances in our knowledge ranging from its etiology through its epidemiology to its clinical findings. This volume has been designed to fill a hiatus in the literature in China. To achieve this aim, we have attempted to review the world-wide advances on endometrial carcinoma and summarize systematically and comprehensively this common gynecologic malig nancy, including the clinical experiences gathered at the Cancer Institute (Hospital) of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences since 1958 as well as a brief description of the psychological problems in patients with gyneco logic cancers.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The outstanding success of the First Edition and the expansion of our knowledge about cancer over the 5 years since its publication have led to the decision to publish a Second Edition which has been fully revised, rewritten and enlarged by the addition of several sections. The First Edition was translated into Italian, Japanese, Polish, and Serbo-Croat and it is expected that additional translations (French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, etc. ) will make this Second Edition a truly international basic cancer Manual. The Revision Committee is convinced that all students and general physicians should know: (a) the important basic aspects of cancer; (b) some details of the most common cancers; and ( c) a few important points about the less common cancers. An attempt has been made to strengthen Part I, General Aspects, which is considered to be the most important part of the Manual for the world's physicians. However, the most common cancers in one part of the world are not necessarily the same in other parts and it is planned to work with local groups to produce adaptations and translations as seem appropriate. In particular, the UICC is anxious to work with local, national, and international committees to help improve the educational experience of students and general physicians in the geographic areas in question. Regional Conferences held by the UICC in Latin America, Asia and the Middle East have resulted in initial plans to accomplish this aim.

Book Multiple Primary Cancers

Download or read book Multiple Primary Cancers written by Alfred I. Neugut and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this text is to help develop a better understanding of the nature of cancer, to expand prevention strategies, and to improve diagnostic and prognostic skills centred around multiple primary cancers. Clinical studies focusing on the aetiology of multiple primary cancers, statistical data presented in tables, and discussions on various organ sites and the possible occurrence of multiple primary cancers are addressed throughout the text. The first part reviews various methodological and statistical considerations in the study, management and prevention of primary, secondary and multiple primary cancers. An entire chapter contains tables of incidence rates of various multiple primary cancers that prove helpful in subsequent chapters. Part Two discusses predisposing genetic conditions and various forms of environmental factors that are associated with multiple primary cancers. Finally, the last section review selected types of cancers and focuses on possible clinical implications for occurrences of specific multiple primary cancers.
