Book Multiple Model Adaptive Control of a Large Flexible Space Structure with Purposeful Dither for Enhanced Identifiability

Download or read book Multiple Model Adaptive Control of a Large Flexible Space Structure with Purposeful Dither for Enhanced Identifiability written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dithering techniques for enhancing uncertain parameter identification with moving-bank Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation (MMAE) and Control (MMAC) algorithms are analyzed in this thesis. The dithering techniques and multiple- model adaptive algorithms are applied to the SPICE 2 flexible space structure. The dithering techniques studied include purposefully constructed square wave, sine wave (fixed and swept frequency) and wide-band noise wave forms. Purposeful rigid-body slew commands are also used in order to excite the structure's flexible bending modes. Dither inputs into the structure are performed in an effort to enhance the open-loop identifiability of the uncertain parameter, namely a scalar multiplier on the undamped natural frequencies of the flexible bending modes. Correct identification of this parameter enables the MMAE and MMAC algorithms to quell any vibrations induced into the structure, in the face of varying parameter values. The results of this study indicate that purposefully constructed dither signals do enhance parameter identification significantly. The parameter identification enhancement due to rigid-body slew command input was shown to be less effective than that with sinusoid and wide band noise dither inputs, however.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 38 (thesis year 1993) a total of 13,787 thesis titles from 22 Canadian and 164 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 38 reports theses submitted in 1993, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Robustness of a Moving Bank Multiple Model Adaptive Controller for a Large Space Structure

Download or read book Robustness of a Moving Bank Multiple Model Adaptive Controller for a Large Space Structure written by Michael R. Schore and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The robustness of moving-bank multiple model adaptive estimation (MMAE) and control (MMAC) algorithms is analyzed in this thesis. The mismatch of a 24-state truth model and a 6-state filter model are evaluated on the basis of MMAE/MMAC performance. A model developed using finite element analysis is used to approximate a large space structure which has a large central hub with appendages radiating out from it. The mass of the hub is considered to be much larger than the mass of the flexible structure. The model is developed in physical coordinates and then transformed into modal coordinates. To obtain a reduced order filter model, the method of singular perturbations is used. The actual positions and velocities of various physical points on the structure are used in the evaluation of the MMAE/MMAC algorithm performance. The results of this study of model mismatching indicates that the MMAE provides accurate position and velocity estimates even in the face of a 6-state to 24-state model mismatch. When a non-adaptive filter is used with a mismatched parameter location, the performance suffers slightly. The use of an adaptive estimator does provide improved performance in the face of uncertain parameter location. Stable control was obtained with the use of MMAC. For the case of nonadaptive filter and mismatched parameter location, the control algorithm behaved in a possible destructive manner. By allowing the filter to adapt to the initial parameter location, the MMAC algorithm provided stable control of the structure, even in the face of large disturbances. (AW).

Book Approximation in Optimal Control and Identification of Large Space Structures

Download or read book Approximation in Optimal Control and Identification of Large Space Structures written by J. S. Gibson and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project dealt with the application of distributed system theory to control and identification of large flexible space structures. The main analytical tools were control theory for infinite dimensional systems and approximation theory for distributed systems. Both theoretical results and practical numerical approximation schemes were developed. The research dealt with both continuous-time and discrete-time control and identification. In each case, an ideal infinite dimensional compensator was used to guide the design of implementable finite dimensional compensators. Most of the research dealt with optimal linear-quadratic control theory, but significant preliminary results were obtained on infinite dimensional autoregressive-moving-average models of distributed systems. These models will be used in adaptive control and identification of flexible space structures. Subject terms: Control of space structures; distributed system theory; infinite dimensional control theory; approximation theory.

Book Decentralized Control of a Large Space Structure Using Direct Output Feedback

Download or read book Decentralized Control of a Large Space Structure Using Direct Output Feedback written by D. V. Thyfault and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct output feedback control methods are used to develop a multiple-input multiple-output controller. The controller is then applied to the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory 2 (CSDL 2) model. The CSDL 2 model is a sophisticated optical space structure representative of large flexible space structures. This model consists of 59 nodes and 23 lumped masses. The beam elements are fully connected and may support axial, transverse, and torsional deformations. NASTRAN is employed to generate modal approximations of the model as well as the mode shapes and frequencies of the resulting modes. Of the numerous modes available for the model, only the first 36 modes are utilized and implemented in the controller. The control problem is formulated in state space form and direct output feedback is implemented. The state is represented as modal amplitudes and rates. System outputs are obtained by rate sensors and control is applied by point force actuators.
