Book Death in the Peaceable Kingdom

Download or read book Death in the Peaceable Kingdom written by Dimitry Anastakis and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death in the Peaceable Kingdom is an intelligent, innovative response to the incorrect assumption that Canadian history is dry and uninspiring. Using the "hooks" of murder, execution, assassination, and suicide, Dimitry Anastakis introduces readers to the full scope of post-Confederation Canadian history. Beginning with the assassination of Thomas D'Arcy McGee, Anastakis recounts the deaths of famous Canadians such as Louis Riel, Tom Thomson, and Pierre Laporte. He also introduces lesser-known events such as the execution of shell-shocked deserter Pte. Harold Carter during the First World War and the suicide of suspected communist Herbert Norman in Cairo during the Cold War. The book concludes with recent Canadian deaths including the suicides of Amanda Todd and Rehtaeh Parsons as a result of cyberbullying. Complementing the chapters are short vignettes—"Murderous Moments" and "Tragic Tales"—that point to broader themes and issues. The book also contains a number of "Active History" exercises such as activities, assignments, and primary document analyses. A timeline, 24 images, and further reading suggestions are included.

Book The Netherlandic Presence in Ontario

Download or read book The Netherlandic Presence in Ontario written by Frans J. Schryer and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schryer’s central argument is that ethnic groups are as much modern “myths” as they are integral components of a socially constructed reality. Focusing on the large cohort of immigrants from the Netherlands and the former Dutch East Indies who arrived in Canada between 1947 and 1960, Schryer shows how the Dutch, despite a loss of ethnic identity and a high level of linguistic assimilation, replicated many aspects of their homeland. While illustrating and illuminating the diversity among immigrants sharing a common national origin, Schryer keeps sight of what is common among them. In doing so, he shows how deeply ingrained habits were modified in a Canadian context, resulting in both continuities and discontinuities. The result is a variegated image reflecting a multidimensional reality.

Book The Crisis of Evangelical Christianity

Download or read book The Crisis of Evangelical Christianity written by Keith C. Sewell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the broad context of Christianity as it developed over two millennia, and with special reference to the last three centuries, this discussion finds that Evangelicalism has repeatedly offered a reduced and distorted understanding of the faith. The evangelical outlook is much less scriptural than evangelicals generally assume. When it comes to appreciating the order of creation, our calling to develop integral Christian thinking and living, the religious significance of culture, and the coming of the kingdom, reductionist Evangelicalism struggles with its only rarely acknowledged deficiencies. As a result, we have all too often ended up with a Christianity shorn of its cosmic scope and wide cultural implications, and restricted to institutional church life and the cultivation of private spiritual experience. The consequences are frequently enervating and corrosive. Without disregarding what is important in the past, evangelicals are here challenged to take the Bible much more seriously, and thereby transcend the limitations of their habitual reductionism. Evangelicals are encouraged to embrace an integral and full-orbed understanding of Christian discipleship that will equip the faithful to address the deep and complex challenges of the twenty-first century.

  • Author : Ryan Edwardson
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press

Download or read book Canadian Content written by Ryan Edwardson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2008-05-24 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nation is given shape in large part through the cultural activities of its builders. Historically, nationalists have turned to the arts and media to articulate and institute a sense of unique national identity. This was certainly true of Canada in the twentieth century. Canadian Content explores ways in which nationhood was defined and pursued through cultural means in Canada throughout the last century. As a framework for the study, Ryan Edwardson distinguishes between three phases of Canadianization: support for the arts and cultured mass media during the colony-to-nation transition; the 'new nationalist' empowerment of multi-brow culture and the call for state intervention in the mid-1960s and 1970s; and the 'cultural industrialism' initiated by the federal government under Pierre Trudeau in 1968. Examining each phase in its turn, Canadian Content looks at Canada as an ongoing postcolonial process of not one but a series of radically different nationhoods, each with its own valued but tentative set of cultural criteria for orchestrating and implementing a Canadian national experience. Considering the relationship between culture and national identity, this study offers an idea of what it means to be Canadian, and suggests just how adaptable, problematic, and ongoing the pursuit of nationhood can be.

He then applies it to real economic problems, including poverty and economic justice, environmental sustainability, and globalization.

Book Theology from the Womb of Asia

Download or read book Theology from the Womb of Asia written by C.S. Song and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-07-07 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 'Theology from the Womb of Asia', Song continues to demonstrate that he is one of the most creative and important theologians of our time. He forces us to expand the horizons of our theological vision, not only by drawing on the resources of Asian thought and experience, but also by insisting that we do theology with passion. Here he offers images, fables, poems, parables, and visions, woven together with his own compelling prose. The biblical stories with which we thought we were familiar become new and more compelling stories when we revisit them with this able and wise guide. And our whole approach to life and living is transformed by the freshness he breathes into all that he surveys with us. --Robert McAfee Brown, Professor Emeritus of Theology and Ethics, Pacific School of Religion In 'Theology from the Womb of Asia', C. S. Song shows how the story of God's compassion in Jesus and the many heartrending stories and poems of the Asian people are reaching out towards each other. Doing theology in this perspective is not a matter of application of doctrine, but of recognition of a relation between the suffering God and suffering humanity, which transcends many artificial and alienating distinctions. The book is an appeal to Asian theologians, but at the same time a necessary challenge to a Western academic theology and missionary thinking. --Bert Hoedemaker, Professor of Missions and Christian Ethics, University of Groningen, the Netherlands A splendid example of doing theology with Asian resources. A breath of fresh air to liven up traditional theology, using original reflections and observations with the backing of close knowledge of traditional theology. A book no theological college can do without. --Yeow Choo Lak, The South East Asia Graduate School of Theology, Singapore C. S. Song is Professor of Theology and Asian Cultures at Pacific School of Religion. His recent publications include 'The Believing Heart'.

Book The un peaceable kingdom

Download or read book The un peaceable kingdom written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decline after 1988 could be attributed to a number of fac- tors: the end of the Cold War and the consequent end of ideological ter- rorism, the renunciation of terrorism by the Palestine Liberation Organization and the shift of the Palestinian struggle toward a more localized insurrection: the intifada. [...] It included the lingering memory of historical injustice arising from the Conquest, the reality of disparity in economic and political power between English and French in Quebec, a growing sense of Québécois national identity, the impact of modernization and urbanization that pre- ceded and accompanied the Quiet Revolution of the early 1960s and the example of national liberation movements oversea [...] Indeed, except for the October Crisis of 1970, FLQ terrorism was notable for the absence of the cold-blood- ed and determined ruthlessness that was the hallmark of groups like the FLN and the PIRA. [...] The two kidnappings, the FLQ's skilful use of the media to communicate its message, a flurry of rumours and the sense that the situation could spi- ral out of control persuaded the federal government that the movement was larger, more widespread and potentially more dangerous than it was in fact. [...] Armenian expatriates had turned to terrorism in the 1970s to demand the creation of an Armenian homeland and to protest the refusal of Turkey and the rest of the world to acknowledge the Turkish genocide against the Armenians during the First World War.

Book Business Ethics Rooted in the Church

Download or read book Business Ethics Rooted in the Church written by Werner Franz and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the role of the church in relation to business? How can Christians be active business practitioners while remaining faithful to their religious convictions? What does it mean for Christians to do business in a context plagued with corruption? While the sometimes tense interaction between the church and business can be documented in multiple locations, the author's own experience of this dynamic comes from the context of the Mennonite churches in Paraguay. Though his treatment of the church and business arises primarily from this particular context, the issues addressed are relevant for a variety of circumstances.
