Book excerpt: Modern armed conflicts around the world are often characterised by the widespread displacement of civilians, serious human rights abuses, the use of rape and sexual violence as a weapon of war, the forced recruitment of child soldiers and attacks on humanitarian personnel. As such, civilians have increasingly become the primary victims in violent conflicts. In line with the UN treaty event to be held in September 2004, this publication summarises the key objectives and provisions of 24 multilateral treaties on the protection of civilians in conflict situations. These include treaties dealing with the prevention and punishment of crimes of genocide, the elimination of racial discrimination, protecting the rights of women and children, human trafficking, prevention of child prostitution and pornography, the status of refugees, transnational organised crime, and the International Criminal Court.
