Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this program was to produce continuous strong CNT-based fibers. The production of continuous fibers was met and we have matched 2/3 of the strength of what has been previously reported with CNT-PAN fibers. We believe that with additional spinning process optimization we can increase the resultant fiber strength. All of the mechanical data shown (below) was generated from a non-optimized spinning process. This preliminary data generated from just the first fiber run shows promising results. The SWNT-PAN fibers obtained using our Set up have a tensile strength of 238 MPa at 300% draw ratio. The produced fibers have very uniform diameter (see SEM images) so the mechanical properties are uniform across the length of the fiber. As a comparison to our initial data Satish Kumar was able to produce SWNT-PAN fibers using 5wt% of SWNT with a tensile strength of 360 MPa at 460% draw ratio. We have started to optimize the spinning process and the other parameters to improve the overall mechanical properties of the fibers.

Current technologies address the above issues separately; material property tailoring and custom design practices aim to the enhancement of dynamic and damage tolerance characteristics, whereas life monitoring and actuation is performed with embedded sensors that may be detrimental to the structural integrity of the component. This publication explores the unique properties of carbon nanotubes (CNT) as an additive in the matrix of Fibre Reinforced Plastics (FRP), for producing structural composites with improved mechanical performance as well as sensing/actuating capabilities. The successful combination of the CNT properties and existing sensing actuating technologies leads to the realization of a multifunctional FRP structure. The current volume presents the state of the art research in this field. The contributions cover all the aspects of the novel composite systems, i.e. modeling from nano to macro scale, enhancement of structural efficiency, dispersion and manufacturing, integral health monitoring abilities, Raman monitoring, as well as the capabilities that ordered carbon nanotube arrays offer in terms of sensing and/or actuating in aerospace composites.

Book excerpt: The graphitic nature, continuous structure, and high mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) make them good candidate for reinforcing polymer fiber. The different types of CNTs including single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), few-wall carbon nanotubes (FWNTs), and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) differ in terms of their diameter and number of graphitic walls. The desire has been to increase the concentration of CNTs as much as possible to make next generation multi-functional materials. The work in this thesis is mainly focused on MWNT and CNF reinforced polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composite fibers, and SWNT, FWNT, and MWNT reinforced poly(etherketone) (PEK) composite fibers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report the spinning of 20% MWNT or 30% CNF reinforced polymer fiber spun using conventional fiber spinning. Also, this is the first study to report the PEK/CNT composite fibers.

Book excerpt: The project provides a spinning process that results in continuous nanotube composite fibers that are about an order of magnitude tougher than any fibers made by mankind or nature. We make two hundred-meter long reels of continuous nanotube-polymer composite fiber at 70X the prior-art rate and achieve fiber strengths higher than 1.8 GPa. Our drawn nanotube fibers match the energy absorption capability of spider silk up to the breaking strain of this silk (30%), and continue absorbing energy until they reach an energy-to-break of 570 J/g, as compared with 160 J/g for the spider silk and 50 J/g for Spectra fiber, 33 J/g for Kevlar fiber. The density-normalized fiber tensile strength is presently 2.2X that of high performance steel wire and the density-normalized Young's modulus of the nanotube fiber and steel wire are identical. We have fabricated these fibers into 100 micron diameter, high performance supercapacitors that are woven into textiles. Other major advances in nanotube spinning, actuation, energy storage, and thermal energy harvesting are described which are potentially important for synthetic multifunctional materials applications.
