Book excerpt: Research Methodologies in Multidisciplinary Subjects In a multidisciplinary approach, experts from different fields work together to solve an issue, drawing on their own areas of expertise to provide comprehensive solutions that are neither isolated nor biased which is presented in this handbook. You may know that law and public health face ever-changing difficulties that need fresh viewpoints from many disciplines. On the other hand, in reality, experts often fall back on tried-and-true methods from their respective fields when faced with a challenge. In order to answer research questions more thoroughly than with only one method, the mixed methods approach combines quantitative and qualitative techniques. The contemporaneous and coordinated design may compensate for the shortcomings of any technique, which is a major benefit of using a mixed methods approach. While quantitative studies could not provide enough information to fully grasp a phenomenon's setting, qualitative studies conducted in isolation might introduce bias and fail to provide applicable results. Hence, a multidisciplinary approach is required for the scientific examination of several concerns. The knowledge, experience, and perspective of professionals from different domains are pooled in a multidisciplinary approach. The book give clarity about use of interdisciplinary research methods in addressing societal challenges and several other methods. In a nutshell, this kind of study allows the investigator to have a comprehensive grasp of the issue at hand. Through the integration of diverse ideas from many academic and scientific disciplines, researchers have the opportunity to generate fresh insights and even uncover unexplored areas of knowledge.

Book Disaster Research

Download or read book Disaster Research written by Rasmus Dahlberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the tendency of books on disasters to predominantly focus on strong geophysical or descriptive perspectives and in-depth accounts of particular catastrophes, Disaster Research provides a much-needed multidisciplinary perspective of the area. This book is is structured thematically around key approaches to disaster research from a range of different, but often complementary academic disciplines. Each chapter presents distinct approaches to disaster research that is anchored in a particular discipline; ranging from the law of disasters and disaster historiography to disaster politics and anthropology of disaster. The methodological and theoretical contributions underlining a specific approach to disasters are discussed and illustrative empirical cases are examined that support and further inform the proposed approach to disaster research. The book thus provides unique insights into fourteen state-of-the-art disciplinary approaches to the understanding of disasters. The theoretical discussions as well as the diverse range of disaster cases should be of interest to both postgraduate and undergraduate students, as well as academics, researchers and policymakers.

Book Conceptual Foundations for Multidisciplinary Thinking

Download or read book Conceptual Foundations for Multidisciplinary Thinking written by Stephen Jay Kline and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our current intellectual system provides us with a far more complete and accurate understanding of nature and ourselves than was available in any previous society. This gain in understanding has arisen from two sources: the use of the 'scientific method', and the breaking up of our intellectual enterprise into increasingly narrower disciplines and research programs. However, we have failed to keep these narrow specialities connected to the intellectual enterprise as a whole. The author demonstrates that this causes a number of difficulties. We have no viewpoint from which we can understand the relationships between the disciplines and lack a forum for adjudicating situations where different disciplines give conflicting answers to the same problem. We seriously underestimate the differences in methodology and in the nature of principles in the various branches of science. This provocative and wide-ranging book provides a detailed analysis and possible solutions for dealing with this problem.

Book Facilitating Interdisciplinary Research

Download or read book Facilitating Interdisciplinary Research written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-04-04 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facilitating Interdisciplinary Research examines current interdisciplinary research efforts and recommends ways to stimulate and support such research. Advances in science and engineering increasingly require the collaboration of scholars from various fields. This shift is driven by the need to address complex problems that cut across traditional disciplines, and the capacity of new technologies to both transform existing disciplines and generate new ones. At the same time, however, interdisciplinary research can be impeded by policies on hiring, promotion, tenure, proposal review, and resource allocation that favor traditional disciplines. This report identifies steps that researchers, teachers, students, institutions, funding organizations, and disciplinary societies can take to more effectively conduct, facilitate, and evaluate interdisciplinary research programs and projects. Throughout the report key concepts are illustrated with case studies and results of the committee's surveys of individual researchers and university provosts.
