Book The Monster and the Mirror

Download or read book The Monster and the Mirror written by K.J. Aiello and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revelatory memoir and cultural criticism that connects popular fantasy and our perceptions of mental illness to offer an empathetic path to compassionate care Growing up, K.J. Aiello was fascinated by magical stories of dragons, wizards, and fantasy, where monsters were not what they seemed and anything was possible. These books and films were both a balm and an escape, a safe space where Aiello’s struggle with mental illness transformed from a burden into a strength that could win battles and vanquish villains. A unique blend of memoir, research, and cultural criticism, The Monster and the Mirror charts Aiello’s life as they try to understand their own mental illness using The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and other stories as both guides to heroism and agency and cautionary tales of how mental illness is easily stereotyped as bad and violent. Aiello questions who is allowed to be “mad” versus “sane,” “good” versus “evil,” and “weak” versus “strong,” and who is allowed to tell their own stories. The Monster and the Mirror explores our perceptions of mental illness in a way that is challenging and tender, empathetic and knowledgeable, and offers a path to deeper understanding and compassionate care.

Book Monsters in Greek Literature

Download or read book Monsters in Greek Literature written by Fiona Mitchell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monsters in Greek literature are often thought of as creatures which exist in mythological narratives, however, as this book shows, they appear in a much broader range of ancient sources and are used in creation narratives, ethnographic texts, and biology to explore the limits of the human body and of the human world. This book provides an in-depth examination of the role of monstrosity in ancient Greek literature. In the past, monsters in this context have largely been treated as unimportant or analysed on an individual basis. By focusing on genres rather than single creatures, the book provides a greater understanding of how monstrosity and abnormal bodies are used in ancient sources. Very often ideas about monstrosity are used as a contrast against which to examine the nature of what it is to be human, both physically and behaviourally. This book focuses on creation narratives, ethnographic writing, and biological texts. These three genres address the origins of the human world, its spatial limits, and the nature of the human body; by examining monstrosity in these genres we can see the ways in which Greek texts construct the space and time in which people exist and the nature of our bodies. This book is aimed primarily at scholars and students undertaking research, not only those with an interest in monstrosity, but also scholars exploring cultural representations of time (especially the primordial and mythological past), ancient geography and ethnography, and ancient philosophy and science. As the representation of monsters in antiquity was strongly influential on medieval, renaissance, and early modern images and texts, this book will also be relevant to people researching these areas.

  • ISBN : 1789126959
  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book The Coming of the Monster written by Owen Francis Dudley and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FATHER ANSELM THORNTON, the Masterful Monk, reappears, to enter the lives of Captain Louis Vivien, of the French Intelligence Service, and Verna Wray, the girl of the tale. The theme is the growing revolt against God and the moral law which is now spreading openly or in subtle forms throughout the world. An unusual love story is interwoven, the setting of which lies mainly in England, with incidental work in Leningrad, Paris, Lourdes and Hollywood. The tale works up to a love-climax, and to a startling ending, consequent upon the detective work of Captain Louis Vivien and certain acts of the Masterful Monk. It will be noticed that the author has adopted a cinema technique—interspersing “interims” with “shots” superimposed in quick succession. The method is effective for showing the monster of revolt in the background, behind the happenings of the tale.

For those looking for firm principles of art teaching and 'best practice', this book presents many important issues in art education with clarity and insight. Based on first-hand experience of teaching children, the book uses many examples from the school situation. Essential topics, such as developing skills through using media, how children draw, producing original artwork, developing ideas and Art and the digital image are tackled with realism and imagination. An important feature is that these subjects are not seen in isolation but are purposefully linked with other areas of the curriculum. The author's approach should encourage teachers to develop and think about art in the National Curriculum. His writing shows a deep sympathy with children and sensitivity to the real task of teaching art to the young.
