Book Microstructural Conditions Contributing to Fatigue Variability in P M Nickel Base Superalloys Preprint

Download or read book Microstructural Conditions Contributing to Fatigue Variability in P M Nickel Base Superalloys Preprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variability in the fatigue behavior of two common nickel-base superalloys is discussed, with emphasis given to understanding the behavior of short fatigue cracks. Rene88DT and IN100 are the materials of interest. and serve important roles in many turbine engine systems. Multiple specimens of each material were tested under low cycle fatigue (LCF) conditions at elevated temperature. Two IN100 specimens that exhibited significant difference in cycles to failure and three Rene88DT specimens having dissimilar short fatigue crack growth rates were interrogated to determine the reasons for these variation. This paper will discuss the microstructure adjacent to the initiation sites in these specimens and its role in affecting the observed disparate crack growth behavior. Additionally, an image correlation technique, use to evaluate the development of strain concentrations in a Rene88DT tensile specimen at room temperature, is described. The utility of image correlation for identifying microstructural 'hot spots' (i.e., initiation sites) in concert with LCF testing is considered.

Book Biaxial Multiaxial Fatigue and Fracture

Download or read book Biaxial Multiaxial Fatigue and Fracture written by Andrea Carpinteri and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-03-19 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS) Technical Commitee on Fatigue of Engineering Materials and Structures (TC3) decided to compile a Special Technical Publication (ESIS STP) based on the 115 papers presented at the 6th International Conference on Biaxial/Multiaxial Fatigue and Fracture. The 25 papers included in the STP have been extended and revised by the authors. The conference was held in Lisbon, Portugal, on 25-28 June 2001, and was chaired by Manual De Freitas, Instituto Superior Tecnico, Lisbon. The meeting, organised by the Instituto Superior Tecnico and sponsored by the Portuguese Minesterio da Cienca e da Tecnologia and by the European Structural Integrity Society, was attended by 151 delegates from 20 countries. The papers in the present book deal with the theoretical, numerical and experimental aspects of the Multiaxial fatigue and fracture of engineering materials and structures. They are divided in to the following six sections; Multiaxial Fatigue of Welded Structures; High cycle Multiaxial fatigue; Non proportional and Variable-Amplitude loading; Defects, Notches, Crack Growth; Low Cycle Multiaxial Fatigue; Applications and Testing Methods. As is well-known, most engineering components and structures in the mechanical, aerospace, power generation, and other industries are subjected to multiaxial loading during their service life. One of the most difficult tasks in design against fatigue and fracture is to translate the information gathered from uniaxial fatigue and fracture tests on engineering materials into applications involving complex states of cyclic stress-strain conditions. This book is the result of co-operation between many researchers from different laboratories, universities and industries in a number of countries.

Book Thermal mechanical Fatigue Behavior of Nickel base Superalloys

Download or read book Thermal mechanical Fatigue Behavior of Nickel base Superalloys written by Norman J. Marchand and published by . This book was released on 19?? with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the main achievements of a 36-month research program the main objective of which was to gain more insight into the problem of crack growth under thermal mechanical fatigue (TMF) conditions. The program was arranged into five technical tasks. Under Task I, the goal was to identify the crack propagation conditions in aircraft engines (hot section) and to assess the validity of conventional fracture mechanics parameters to address TMF crack growth. The second task defined the test facilities, test specimen and the testing conditions needed to establish the effectiveness of data correlation parameters identified in Task I. Under Task III, a computerized testing system to measure the TMF behavior (LCF and CG behaviors) of various alloy systems was built. A crack propagation test program was defined and conducted under Task IV. The test variables included strain range, strain rate (frequency) and temperature. Task V correlated and generalized the Task IV data for isothermal and variable temperature conditions so that several crack propagation parameters could be compared and evaluated.

Book A Study of the Fatigue Behavior of Small Cracks in Nickel Base Superalloys

Download or read book A Study of the Fatigue Behavior of Small Cracks in Nickel Base Superalloys written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue of behavior of short cracks was investigate in five wrought nickel-base superalloys currently used for aircraft turbine disks. Cracks were initiated at artificial defects and at persistent slip bands. Test frequencies ranged from 20Hz to 10cpm. Fatigue crack growth rates were measured over crack lengths ranging from 10 um to 1mm. Most of the testing was performed in load control with stress ranges approaching the cyclic yield strengths of alloys. Strain controlled tests were performed on IN100 under elastic-plastic cycling conditions. Keywords: Crack propagation; Physical metallurgy.

Book Fatigue Crack Propagation of Nickel Base Superalloys at 650 C

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Propagation of Nickel Base Superalloys at 650 C written by TP. Gabb and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 650°C fatigue crack propagation behavior of two nickel-base superalloys, René 95 and Waspaloy, were studied with particular emphasis placed on understanding the roles of creep, environment, and two key grain boundary alloying additions, boron and zirconium. Comparison of air and vacuum data showed the air environment to be detrimental over a wide range of frequencies for both alloys. In-depth analysis of René 95 showed that at lower frequencies, such as 0.02 Hz, failure in air occurred by intergranular, environmentally assisted creep crack growth, while at higher frequencies, up to 5.0 Hz, environmental interactions were still evident but creep effects were minimized. The effect of boron and zirconium in Waspaloy was found to be important where environmental and/or creep interactions were present. In those instances, removal of boron and zirconium dramatically increased crack growth. It is therefore plausible that effective dilution of these elements may explain, in part, a previously observed trend in which crack growth rates increased with decreasing grain size.
