Book Marbled Murrelet Foraging Ecology

Download or read book Marbled Murrelet Foraging Ecology written by Kyle Andrew Muirhead and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marbled murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus) is listed as threatened in both Canada and the United States due to logging of old-growth forest stands, their primary nesting habitat. Existing research is primarily focused on this terrestrial aspect of the species' ecology. Our understanding of their at-sea foraging ecology, however, is limited to broad-scale studies of population abundance and dynamics. In order to further understand the spatial and temporal variations of marbled murrelet at-sea foraging behaviour and habitat use, bi-weekly surveys of marbled murrelets were conducted in Clayoquot Sound, BC, between May 1 and September 1, 2007 and 2008. Data were first analysed using a Getis-Ord Gi* spatial analysis to identify high-use foraging areas. Total marbled murrelet presence was consistent between years, but spatial distribution varied significantly in both years. A subsequent analysis of oceanic environmental variables found that temperature, salinity and phytoplankton densities (measured as chl a) were spatially ubiquitous, with no significant variation in measures across the study area. Chl a levels showed significant temporal variation, though similar trends in marbled murrelet abundance over time in both seasons suggest that phytoplankton levels do not directly affect murrelet presence. Marbled murrelets were also observed foraging within several metres of gray whales (Eschrictius robustus) feeding on epibenthic zooplankton in 2006 and 2008, a previously undocumented relationship. Join count statistics identified significant clustering of murrelets up to 300m from 39 feeding gray whales in 2006, and no association with 5 gray whales in 2008, marking a foraging association conditional on the abundance of both gray whales and their prey, but potentially significant to marbled murrelet survival and fecundity.

Book Verification of a Marbled Murrelet Habitat Inventory on the British Columbian Central Coast

Download or read book Verification of a Marbled Murrelet Habitat Inventory on the British Columbian Central Coast written by David Sinclair Donald and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To support Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus) strategic planning initiatives in the Central Coast region of British Columbia, the Ministry of Environment had 1.5 million hectares of forest mapped for potential nesting habitat quality using a six-class (Nil to Very High) air photo interpretation classification system. This classification evaluates attributes, such as tree size and canopy complexity, that are indirectly associated with potential nesting platform occurrence, on 1:10 000/1:15 000 air photos. We verified the habitat classifications of the air photo inventory maps using helicopter lowlevel aerial surveys.

Book Long term Risks to Marbled Murrelet Brachyramphus Marmoratus Populations

Download or read book Long term Risks to Marbled Murrelet Brachyramphus Marmoratus Populations written by J. D. Steventon and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report analyzes the conservation risk, or the confidence of success, associated with nesting habitat management strategies for the marbled murrelet in British Columbia. The framework for the analysis was a habitat-linked population viability analysis using an integrated package of models of marbled murrelet demography, habitat associations, habitat management, and environmental change to project relative population size & persistence probability at various forest management assumptions. The analysis focusses on changes in persistence probability as an unambiguous measure of risk, applied primarily at the scale of the marbled murrelet conservation regions proposed by the Canadian Marbled Murrelet Recovery Team. The report also assesses coast-wide risk using a bet hedging probability theory approach to combining regional risks. A key component of the analysis was the inclusion of uncertainty and how robust different management strategies might be in light of those uncertainties. Bayesian decision analysis was applied to determine the optimal choice of habitat amount to set aside. Appendices include details of the models used in the analysis.

Book Multi scale Analyses of Nest Site Selection and Fledging Success by Marbled Murrelets Brachyramphus Marmoratus in British Columbia

Download or read book Multi scale Analyses of Nest Site Selection and Fledging Success by Marbled Murrelets Brachyramphus Marmoratus in British Columbia written by Michael P. Silvergieter and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I studied nesting habitat selection and fledging success by marbled murrelets, a seabird that nests in old-growth forests of high economic value, at two regions of southwestern British Columbia. At Clayoquot Sound, habitat occurs in larger stands, and murrelets selected steeper slopes and patches with more platform trees, and shorter trees, than at random sites. At Desolation Sound, where smaller forest stands predominate, patch scale variables were less important; increased canopy complexity in the patch, and wetter/cooler landscape aspects distinguished nests from random sites. In both regions, nests were often in "distinctive" trees, taller and with more potential platforms than others in the patch. Habitat features at multiple scales did not predict fledging success. Habitat quality as ranked by current remote methods (air photo interpretation, low-level aerial surveys) correlates with probability of use derived from stand-level habitat selection models, providing a quantitative assessment of their effectiveness as management tools.

Book Regional Population Monitoring of the Marbled Murrelet

Download or read book Regional Population Monitoring of the Marbled Murrelet written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marbled murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus) ranges from Alaska to California and is listed under the Endangered Species Act as a threatened species in Washington, Oregon, and California. Marbled murrelet recovery depends, in large part, on conservation and restoration of breeding habitat on federally managed lands. A major objective of the Northwest Forest Plan (the Plan) is to conserve and restore nesting habitat that will sustain a viable marbled murrelet population. Under the Plan, monitoring is an essential component and is designed to help managers understand the degree to which the Plan is meeting this objective. This report describes methods used to assess the status and trend of marbled murrelet populations under the Plan.

Book Research on Marbled Murrelets in the Desolation Sound Area During the 1994 Breeding Season

Download or read book Research on Marbled Murrelets in the Desolation Sound Area During the 1994 Breeding Season written by Andrew Edward Derocher and published by Delta, B.C. : Canadian Wildlife Service. This book was released on 1996 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a study conducted to locate and establish a long-term site for multi-faceted research on the ecology and population dynamics of marbled murrelets (Brachyramphus marmoratus), with emphasis on individually marked birds. Research objectives included determination of nesting habitat, survival and population size estimations, recruitment rates, reproductive success, marine distribution and abundance, foraging behaviour, and oceanographic features as they affect marbled murrelet distribution. Results are presented from the 1994 field season and 1991-93 pilot studies. The field work involved capture of birds flying into and out of Theodosia Inlet on the southern mainland coast of British Columbia, examination of captured birds, and radio tracking of selected birds.
