Book Multi scale Processing of Powder based Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Multi scale Processing of Powder based Aluminum Alloys written by Jimmy J. Patel and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research work involves macro and micro scale processing of Al-alloys. At micro level, pillars were generated from AL-Sn-Mg powders and binder mixture. Both conventional and current activated sintering processes were investigated in order to do sintering. Two types of binders and solvent system were investigated. Paraffin wax (PW) and n-heptane was used with AL-Sn-Mg powders and polyethylene glycol (PEG) and water was used with Al-SN powders. Setup was designed and fabricated to generate pillars and for DC current activated sintering. Rolling technique and very low pressure was applied in this application. At macro level, press and sinter technique was investigated to compare the mechanical properties such as density, hardness and shrinkage of mechanically alloyed Al-Sn-Mg powders and unmilled powders. The result shows that the MA powders have higher mechanical properties compared to unmilled powders. However, unmilled powder compact sintered very nicely and used for further processing. Green pillars were successfully generated using both binder systems. For sintering, conventional sintering appeared more successful than current activated sintering.

Download or read book High Performance Powder Metallurgy Aluminum Alloys an Overview written by M. J. Koczak and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historic development of aluminum powder metallurgy dates back to the early 1900's with initial flake powder production and has matured to the present day production of viable aerospace alloys. Primary powder production and processing techniques, such as atomization and mechanical alloying are reviewed. Processing-microstructure-property relationships in four classes of high performance powder metallurgy (P/M) aluminum alloys are considered. These are (Aluminum-Iron-Cobalt, Aluminum-Iron-Nickel) high strength alloys (Aluminum-Zinc-Magnesium, copper-cobalt); high specific modulus alloys (Aluminum-Lithium-Copper); high temperature alloys (Aluminium-Iron-Cobalt, Aluminum-Iron-Nickel); mechanically alloyed material (Aluminum-Magnesium) and composite alloys. Direct property comparisons with counterpart ingot metallurgy alloys are presented where ever appropriate. Aluminum powder metallurgy alloy development is now at a mature stage of growth where commercial and aerospace application are being sought and developed in competition with traditional aluminum ingot metallurgy, titanium and composite structures. The future growth and development of these alloy systems is vested in reliable economic processing. Keywords: Alloys, High performance powder metallurgy, Production techniques, Microstructures, Processing. (JG).

Book Hot Deformation and Processing of Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Hot Deformation and Processing of Aluminum Alloys written by Hugh J. McQueen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-09-28 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive treatise on the hot working of aluminum and its alloys, Hot Deformation and Processing of Aluminum Alloys details the possible microstructural developments that can occur with hot deformation of various alloys, as well as the kind of mechanical properties that can be anticipated. The authors take great care to explain and differentiate hot working in the context of other elevated temperature phenomena, such as creep, superplasticity, cold working, and annealing. They also pay particular attention to the fundamental mechanisms of aluminum plasticity at hot working temperatures. Using extensive analysis derived from polarized light optical microscopy (POM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) scanning electron-microscopy with electron backscatter imaging (SEM-EBSD), and orientation imaging microscopy (OIM), the authors examine those microstructures that evolve in torsion, compression, extrusion, and rolling. Further microstructural analysis leads to detailed explanations of dynamic recovery (DRV), static recovery (SRV), discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (dDRX), discontinuous static recrystallization (dSRX), grain defining dynamic recovery (gDRV) (formerly geometric dynamic recrystallization, or gDRX), and continuous dynamic recrystallization involving both a single phase (cDRX/1-phase) and multiple phases (cDRX/2-phase). A companion to other works that focus on modeling, manufacturing involving plastic and superplastic deformation, and control of texture and phase transformations, this book provides thorough explanations of microstructural development to lay the foundation for further study of the mechanisms of thermomechanical processes and their application.
