Book Inelasticity and Micromechanics of Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Inelasticity and Micromechanics of Metal Matrix Composites written by George Voyiadjis and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains fifteen papers based on the presentations made at the symposium on "Inelasticity and Micromechanics of Metal Matrix Composites" held at the University of Washington, USA, in mid-1994. The papers represent the most recent work conducted on inelasticity and micromechanics of metal matrix composites. The book is divided into two parts: Part I deals with the study of inelastic deformation in metal matrix composites, while Part II tackles the micromechanical aspects of metal matrix composites. The articles discuss different aspects of these two topics ranging from purely theoretical treatments to extensive experimental investigations. Many of the papers are by prominent researchers working in this area.

Book Advances in Damage Mechanics Metals and Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Advances in Damage Mechanics Metals and Metal Matrix Composites written by George Voyiadjis and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides in a single and unified volume a clear and thorough presentation of the recent advances in continuum damage mechanics for metals and metal matrix composites. Emphasis is placed on the theoretical formulation of the different constitutive models in this area, but sections are added to demonstrate the applications of the theory. In addition, some sections contain new material that has not appeared before in the literature. The book is divided into three major parts: Part I deals with the scalar formulation and is limited to the analysis of isotropic damage in materials; Parts II and III deal with the tensor formulation and is applied to general states of deformation and damage. The material appearing in this text is limited to plastic deformation and damage in ductile materials (e.g. metals and metal matrix composites) but excludes many of the recent advances made in creep, brittle fracture, and temperature effects since the authors feel that these topics require a separate volume for this presentation. Furthermore, the applications presented in this book are the simplest possible ones and are mainly based on the uniaxial tension test.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers several aspects of the synthesis of composites by the pressureless infiltration technique. It describes the methods used to obtain green preforms, such as cold pressed and hot sintering, describing the heating time, load, and time required for pressing the preforms. Additionally, wettability phenomena, which is directly related on infiltration, is extensively described. Wettability process and interfacial reactions are analyzed in many ceramic-metal systems prior to fabricate the composites. A complete description of fabrication processes for Metal Matrix Composites is included. An extensive section on structural, chemical, and mechanical characterization of composites fabricated with aluminum and magnesium alloys as matrices reinforced with titanium carbide (TiC), aluminum nitride (AlN), silicon carbide (SiC) and alumina (Al2O3) is included. Relevant techniques for joining composites, such as welding and brazing are addressed. As well as issues pertaining to the corrosion and wear of composites are discussed as well. Corrosion behavior of some composites exposed to aqueous media was analyzed. Corrosion of composites using TiC and SiC like reinforcement and Al, Ni, and some Al-Cux, Al-Mgx and Al-Cu-Li alloys like matrix is discussed extensively. The structural characterization techniques addressed include: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), optical microscopy (OM), differential thermal analysis (DTA), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). Mechanical testing including hardness, elastic modulus, tension tests, and impact tests were used in the characterization of composites. Theoretical models for prediction of some mechanical properties are included too.

Book Modeling Dynamic Behavior of Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Modeling Dynamic Behavior of Metal Matrix Composites written by İsmail Tirtom and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical investigation has been conducted on the strain rate dependent compression mechanical behavior of a SiC-particulate reinforced Al (2024-O) metal matrix composite. The effect of particle volume fraction on the strain rate sensitivity of the composite was determined using axisymmetric Finite Element unit cell models, where the particles are treated as elastic spheres embedded within a visco-plastic matrix, implemented in LUSAS Finite Element Analysis program. Particles are taken to be elastic, equal-sized, spherical and uniformly distributed in the matrix. The strain rate dependent constitutive behavior of the matrix material uses a linear relation between stress and strain rate formulation and is obtained from independent experimental results on the matrix. The flow stress of the composites is predicted over a range of strain rates for different particle volume fractions. Numerical results of the flow stress and strain rate sensitivity of the composite were also compared with those of experimental results, for 15% SiC particle reinforced 2024-O Al metal matrix composite. Influence of particle shape on the behavior of the MMC at high strain rates is also investigated. A unit cell, which is an elastic cylinder embedded within a visco-plastic matrix, is used. It is also shown that the rate dependent flow stress and local stress in the microstructure are influenced by particle shape. If reinforcement edge sharpness increases, local stress increases at that area. The results show that both the flow stress and the strain rate sensitivity increase with increasing volume fraction of the reinforcement due to the constraining effect of the reinforcement. Numerical calculations have shown an increased strain rate sensitivity of the composite over the matrix alloy. The discrepancy found between numerical and experimental results was finally discussed based on geometrical and microstructural parameters that might affect the composite flow stress and strain rate sensitivity.

Book Constitutive Modeling of Metal Matrix Composites Under Cyclic Loading

Download or read book Constitutive Modeling of Metal Matrix Composites Under Cyclic Loading written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A micro-mechanical cyclic/fatigue damage model is developed for metal matrix composites. The model is based on thermodynamical principles within the framework of continuum damage mechanics and employs physical principles of damage behavior in metal matrix composites. A micro-mechanical approach is used in the sense that the overall material behavior is predicted by modeling the material behavior of the individual constituents. The Mori-Tanaka method is employed as a homogenization procedure. Individual anisotropic damage variables in the form of second order tensors are used for each of the constituents to allow for the modeling of appropriate damage and failure mechanisms in the composite. Individual damage initiation and evolution equations are developed for each constituent where physical principles of the damage mechanisms observed in experiments are considered. Damage mechanisms such as debonding and delamination are represented through individual damage tensors. The overall damage in the composite is obtained based on the individual damage tensors by means of the employed homogenization procedure. The elasto-plastic constitutive equations incorporate the influence of damage through the definition of the so-called damage effect tensors. A numerical implementation of the model is used to simulate cyclic/fatigue damage in metal matrix composites. Comparison of the results from the numerical simulations with experimental data show good agreement and substantiate the capabilities of the model.

Book Deformation and Failure of Metal Matrix Composites Under Dynamic Loads

Download or read book Deformation and Failure of Metal Matrix Composites Under Dynamic Loads written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SRI International conducted a three-year program of experiments, microstructural examinations, and analysis to determine the rate sensitivity of deformation and failure of metal-matrix composites (MMC) and to understand and model the role of interfaces and constituents on dynamic failure. Silicon-carbide fiber reinforced Timetal 21S and Ti-15-3 matrices in three heat treatment conditions were studied. The work included dynamic fiber pushout experiments to measure dynamic interface strength, notched three-point-bend experiments with acoustic emission sensors to determine the static fracture resistance, and notched one-point-bend experiments to determine dynamic fracture resistance. Microstructural examinations were performed on transverse and longitudinal cross sections. The nature of interface failure, fiber failure, and matrix failure was established. A key finding was that toughening from fiber bridging is not obtained under bending loads. In bending, fibers fail well in advance of the crack tip and are thereby prevented from bridging matrix cracks. A two-dimensional finite element model of the composite was developed in which fibers, matrix, and interfaces in the vicinity of the notch root were modeled explicitly. The model can be used in parameter studies to investigate changes in interface and constituent properties, and loading rate, and hence assist in designing MMCs having tailored combinations of strength, toughness, and, particularly, greater resistance to bend failure.

Book Construction of Non Linear Model for Binary Metal Matrix Composites

Download or read book Construction of Non Linear Model for Binary Metal Matrix Composites written by H. Murakami and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research is conducted in response to the need for microstructural-based theories which furnish increased simulation capabilities of metal-matrix composite structures in both static and dynamic regimes with a minimum of model parameters to be experimentally determined. The objective of the research is to develop a nonlinear model of binary metal-matrix composites that will provide greater accuracy than existing models in linear and nonlinear regimes for static and dynamic loading. Furthermore, in an effort to accommodate practical structural configurations a plate theory is developed for fiber-reinforced composite plates. The progress made during the first year's effort toward achieving the above objectives includes: 1) the development and validation of a linear mixture model which accounts for effective moduli and harmonic wave dispersion, 2) testing of methodologies for including nonlinear material responses, and 3) a significant improvement of existing laminated composite theories to account for inelastic responses driven by in-plane strains.
