Download or read book Multi Objective Decision Making written by Diederik M. Roijers and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2017-04-20 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many real-world decision problems have multiple objectives. For example, when choosing a medical treatment plan, we want to maximize the efficacy of the treatment, but also minimize the side effects. These objectives typically conflict, e.g., we can often increase the efficacy of the treatment, but at the cost of more severe side effects. In this book, we outline how to deal with multiple objectives in decision-theoretic planning and reinforcement learning algorithms. To illustrate this, we employ the popular problem classes of multi-objective Markov decision processes (MOMDPs) and multi-objective coordination graphs (MO-CoGs). First, we discuss different use cases for multi-objective decision making, and why they often necessitate explicitly multi-objective algorithms. We advocate a utility-based approach to multi-objective decision making, i.e., that what constitutes an optimal solution to a multi-objective decision problem should be derived from the available information about user utility. We show how different assumptions about user utility and what types of policies are allowed lead to different solution concepts, which we outline in a taxonomy of multi-objective decision problems. Second, we show how to create new methods for multi-objective decision making using existing single-objective methods as a basis. Focusing on planning, we describe two ways to creating multi-objective algorithms: in the inner loop approach, the inner workings of a single-objective method are adapted to work with multi-objective solution concepts; in the outer loop approach, a wrapper is created around a single-objective method that solves the multi-objective problem as a series of single-objective problems. After discussing the creation of such methods for the planning setting, we discuss how these approaches apply to the learning setting. Next, we discuss three promising application domains for multi-objective decision making algorithms: energy, health, and infrastructure and transportation. Finally, we conclude by outlining important open problems and promising future directions.
Download or read book A Weighted Graph Optimization Approach for Automatic Location of Forest Road Networks written by Jürg Andreas Stückelberger and published by vdf Hochschulverlag AG. This book was released on 2008 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a large majority of regions where forestry activities occur, roads are the backbone of their efficient management. Automatic planning of a road network is an ongoing, challenging task. Advances have been aided by the increased availability and accuracy of digital terrain models, greater computing power, and improvements in optimization techniques. Defining the objectives and deriving adequate objective functions are crucial steps in guiding the solution toward an ideal network, especially when individual goals may conflict. For example, whereas the conservationist might prefer that a layout minimizes any detrimental impacts on the environment, the forest landowner may favor cost-minimal roads while the forest operator would like to have a dense network in order to reduce transportation costs. This thesis introduces models for three objective functions: - forest road construction and maintenance costs, - negative ecological effects from such roads, - the suitability, or attractiveness, of a network for cable-yarding.Case studies in mountainous project areas illustrate the trade-offs among these conflicting goals, and demonstrate how to optimize different objectives in order to make an optimal decision overall.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at CP 2009: The 15th International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming. It was held from September 20–24, 2009 at the Rectory of the New University of Lisbon, Portugal. Everyone involved with the conference thanks our sponsors for their support. There were 128 submissions to the research track, of which 53 were accepted for a rate of 41.4%. Each submission was reviewed by three reviewers, with a small number of additional reviews obtained in exceptional cases. Each review waseitherbyaProgrammeCommitteemember, orbyacolleagueinvitedtohelp by a committee member thanks to their particular expertise. Papers submitted as long papers were accepted at full length or not at all. It is important to note that papers submitted as short papers were held to the same high standards of qualityas long papers. There is thus no distinction in these proceedings between long and short papers, except of course the number of pages they occupy. As it happens, the acceptancerates of short and long papers wereverysimilar indeed. Therewere13submissionstotheapplicationtrack,ofwhich8wereaccepted, fora rateof61.5%.Papersunderwentthe samereviewprocessasregularpapers, and there was not a separate committee for reviewing application track papers. However, papers in the application track were not required to be original or novel research, but to be original and novel as an application of constraints.

Download or read book Multi Objective Optimization written by Gade Pandu Rangaiah and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimization has been playing a key role in the design, planning and operation of chemical and related processes for nearly half a century. Although process optimization for multiple objectives was studied by several researchers back in the 1970s and 1980s, it has attracted active research in the last 10 years, spurred by the new and effective techniques for multi-objective optimization. In order to capture this renewed interest, this monograph presents the recent and ongoing research in multi-optimization techniques and their applications in chemical engineering. Following a brief introduction and general review on the development of multi-objective optimization applications in chemical engineering since 2000, the book gives a description of selected multi-objective techniques and then goes on to discuss chemical engineering applications. These applications are from diverse areas within chemical engineering, and are presented in detail. All chapters will be of interest to researchers in multi-objective optimization and/or chemical engineering; they can be read individually and used in one''s learning and research. Several exercises are included at the end of many chapters, for use by both practicing engineers and students.
Download or read book Towards a New Evolutionary Computation written by Jose A. Lozano and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-01-21 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimation of Distribution Algorithms (EDAs) are a set of algorithms in the Evolutionary Computation (EC) field characterized by the use of explicit probability distributions in optimization. Contrarily to other EC techniques such as the broadly known Genetic Algorithms (GAs) in EDAs, the crossover and mutation operators are substituted by the sampling of a distribution previously learnt from the selected individuals. EDAs have experienced a high development that has transformed them into an established discipline within the EC field. This book attracts the interest of new researchers in the EC field as well as in other optimization disciplines, and that it becomes a reference for all of us working on this topic. The twelve chapters of this book can be divided into those that endeavor to set a sound theoretical basis for EDAs, those that broaden the methodology of EDAs and finally those that have an applied objective.

Download or read book Evolutionary Algorithms for Solving Multi Objective Problems written by Carlos A. Coello Coello and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The solving of multi-objective problems (MOPs) has been a continuing effort by humans in many diverse areas, including computer science, engineering, economics, finance, industry, physics, chemistry, and ecology, among others. Many powerful and deterministic and stochastic techniques for solving these large dimensional optimization problems have risen out of operations research, decision science, engineering, computer science and other related disciplines. The explosion in computing power continues to arouse extraordinary interest in stochastic search algorithms that require high computational speed and very large memories. A generic stochastic approach is that of evolutionary algorithms (EA). Such algorithms have been demonstrated to be very powerful and generally applicable for solving different single objective problems. Their fundamental algorithmic structures can also be applied to solving many multi-objective problems. In this book, the various features of multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) are presented in an innovative and unique fashion, with detailed customized forms suggested for a variety of applications. Also, extensive MOEA discussion questions and possible research directions are presented at the end of each chapter.
