Book excerpt: An engineering methodology has been developed for the prediction of propulsive lift system induced aerodynamic effects for multi-lift-jet VTOL aircraft operating in the hover mode in an out of ground effect. The developed methodology takes into account the effects of aircraft geometry, aircraft orientation (pitch, roll) and height above the ground plane, cross-flow, lift- jet vector directions with respect to the airframe, lift-jet exit flow conditions and noncircular nozzle exit geometry for low aspect ratio nozzles.

This research has involved Stanford faculty, research associates, graduate students, and many distinguished visitors in collaborative efforts with the research staff of NASA Ames Research Center. The occasion of the Institute's tenth anniversary was used to reflect back on where that research has brought us, and to consider where our endeavors should be directed next. Thus, an International Symposium was held to review recent advances in the fields relevant to the activities of the Institute and to discuss the areas of research to be undertaken in the future. This anniversary was also chosen a.."1 an opportunity to honor one of the Institute's founders and its di rector, Professor Krishnamurty Karamcheti. The jet arrangements included circular and rectangular jets in various single, dual and triple jet configurations. The tests were conducted in the 14 by 22 foot tunnel at the NASA Langley Research Center. Tests covered a range of heights above the ground, nozzle pressure ratios, and forward velocities.
