Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This translation of Mukhtasar Minhaj Al-Qasidin is an abridged version of ibn Al-Jawzi's summary of Imam Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali's well known book, Ihya Ulum Ad-Din.In Imam Al-Ghazalis Ihya Ulum Ad-Din (The Revitalization of Sciences of Religion) apparently has some defects that only scholars can realize, such as the narrations which have been traced back to the prophet while they are fabricated or inauthentic. Therefore, Imam Ibn Al-Jawziyy compiled this book free of those defects, while retaining the benefits on the original book. In this book the author relied only on authentic and famous narrations, and removed from or added to the original book what he seemed necessary. This book is divided into four chapters: Chapter One: Acts of WorshipChapter Two: CustomsChapter Three: Destructive FlawsChapter Four: Means of SalvationEach one of these four chapters consists of numerous titles and sub-titles.

Book Sufism and the Modern in Islam

Download or read book Sufism and the Modern in Islam written by Martin Van Bruinessen and published by I. B. Tauris. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sufism has not only survived into the twenty-first century but has experienced a significant resurgence throughout the Muslim world. Sufism and the 'Modern' in Islam offers refreshing new perspectives on this phenomenon, demonstrating surprising connections between Sufism and Muslim reformist currents, and the vital presence of Sufi ideas and practices in all spheres of life. Contrary to earlier theories of the modernization of Muslim societies, Sufi influence on the political, economic and intellectual life of contemporary Muslim societies has been considerable. Although less noticed than the resurgence of radical Islam, Sufi orders and related movements involve considerably larger numbers of followers, even among the modern urban middle classes. This innovative study brings together new comparative and interdisciplinary research to show how Sufis have responded to modernization and globalization and how various currents of Islamic reform and Sufism have interacted. Offering fascinating new insights into the pervasive Sufi influence on modern Islamic religiosity and contemporary political and economic life, this book raises important questions about Islam in the age of urbanism and mass communications.

Book On Disciplining the Soul

Download or read book On Disciplining the Soul written by Ghazzālī and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spiritual life in Islam begins with riyadat al-nafs, the inner warfare against the ego. Distracted and polluted by worldliness, the lower self has a tendency to drag the human creature down into arrogance and vice. Only by a powerful effort of will can the sincere worshipper achieve the purity of soul which enables him to attain God's proximity. This translation of two chapters from The Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din) details the sophisticated spiritual techniques adopted by classical Islam. In the first step, On Disciplining the Soul, which cites copious anecdotes from the Islamic scriptures and biographies of the saints, Ghazali explains how to acquire good character traits, and goes on to describe how the sickness of the heart may be cured. In the second part, Breaking the Two Desires, he focusses on the question of gluttony and sexual desire, concluding, in the words of the Prophet, that 'the best of all matters is the middle way'. The translator has added an introduction and notes which explore Ghazali's ability to make use of Greek as well as Islamic ethics. The work will prove of special interest to those interested in Sufi mysticism, comparative ethics, and the question of sexuality in Islam.

Book excerpt: Allah has informed us about His enemy, Iblis (the Satan), when He asked him why he refused to prostrate to Adam Iblis argued that he was better than Adam, and asked Allah to allow him respite, and He 98 allowed him so. Then Iblis, the enemy of Allah, said: {Because you have sent me astray, surely, I will lie in wait against them (on) Your Straight Path. Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and you will not find most of them thankful ones). The majority of the Interpreters of the Qur'an have explained that Satan's answer was in an ordered manner to show his determination to conspire against the believers. Man follows one of four ways, and none else; he either takes a path on his right, left, in front of him or behind him. On each path, he finds satin lying in wait for him. If man follows any of these paths, while observing the Commands of Allah, he finds Satan laying obstacles against him to stop him from being obedient to Allah U. But if man follows any of those paths to commit sins, Satan will encourage him and provide all the support he needs.

Book excerpt: History of Islamic Fiqh is a wonderful bird's eye view of the Islamic legal tradition. It serves as a reliable, accessible primer for anyone being introduced to the study of fiqh, or Islamic jurisprudence. The late esteemed scholar, Dr 'Umar al-Ashqar, offers a thorough survey of this discipline's roots, the traceability of its scriptural and rational sources, and the spectrum of legal theories and juristic positions across mainstream Sunni Islam. Furthermore, he speaks about the evolution of fiqh, the rise of its major hermeneutical schools (madhāhib), their periods of proliferation and stagnation, and their interdependence today in efforts to engage the complex dynamics of modern times. The author had graciously accepted to have this work translated for the sake of the English speaking world, and his heirs graciously forfeited any financial rights from this non-profit publication. We ask Allah to reward Dr al-Ashqar and his family in ways that only He can, and to allow the benefit of this book to extend far and wide for generations to come. Āmīn.
