Su perfil demografico ha variado en el sentido de ser mayoritariamente urbanas y principalmente adultas jovenes. Uno de los cambios mas evidentes ha sido su menor fecundidad que ha pasado de 7 a 3 hijos de promedio. Tambien ha crecido en este tiempo en numero de mujeres que participan en el mercado laboral. Segun la encuesta nacional de empleo de 1991, cerca de un tercio de la poblacion activa esta compuesto por mujeres. Tambien han mejorado las condiciones de salud aunque persistan deficiencias apreciables. La incorporacion de las mexicanas a posiciones de poder ha sido particularmente lenta y escasa en comparacion con el resto de america latina(el 9,2 % en la camara de diputados, solo 3 mujeres han ocupado cartera ministerial y un 2,8 % ostentan presidencias municipales).
