Book Trading Women s Health and Rights

Download or read book Trading Women s Health and Rights written by Caren Grown and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world, policymakers and civil society are debating how economic and trade policies shape public health. This edited collection adds a new dimension to this debate. It synthesizes research from a variety of disciplines to analyse how the liberalization of international trade affects reproductive health and rights. Case studies from Mexico, Sri Lanka, China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Egypt illuminate how trade-related changes in women’s employment influence their reproductive needs and capacities. The book demonstrates how global and national trade policies affect the quality, quantity, and cost of reproductive health services. Contributors also explore the implications of the World Trade Organization and the various trade agreements under its purview for reproductive health services and rights. Ultimately, this collection addresses the key policy issues for advocates of both reproductive health and rights and economic justice, and shows how trade agreements weighted against the poor in the South have very specific gendered consequences. This book is aimed at an inter-disciplinary audience of economists, public health professionals, demographers, sociologists, anthropologists, and women’s studies specialists. It will also be of interest to policymakers and representatives of civil society organizations working on health, economic justice, and employment issues.

Book Global Inequalities at Work

Download or read book Global Inequalities at Work written by Jody Heymann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A map of the relationship between work and health that is truly global--both geographically and in its coverage of the impact of work on the health of individuals, families, and societies, has not previously been drawn. Global Inequalities at Work is the first book to fill in the map. Drawing from studies done around the world, it critically examines the many ways in which work is affecting health around the world. The first section covers the wide range of risks--physical, chemical, and social--tot he health of employees in agricultural, industrial, and post-industrial workplaces. Part II provides a detailed analysis of how working conditions can dramatically influence the health and welfare of family members--including children, elderly parents, and the disabled--in both the developing and industrial world. Part III examines the relationships between work and health at the societal level by focusing on two examples: the ways in which working conditions affect income inequalities and health, and the ways in which working conditions influence gender inequalities and health. Part IV investigates the new challenges to and opportunities for improving the relationship between work and health that are presented by a rapidly globalizing economy. Global Inequalities at Work addresses these issues at a time when globalization is both markedly changing the impact of work on the health of individuals, families, and societies, and radically revising what can be done about it. Leaders from universities, international organizations, and nongovernmental organizations bring to this edited volume expertise from six continents.

Book The Terror of the Machine

Download or read book The Terror of the Machine written by Devon G. Peña and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1997-04-15 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born of thirteen years of field research, this interdisciplinary work explores the complex intersections of technology, class, gender, and ecology in the transnational milieu of Mexico's maquiladoras, foreign-owned assembly plants located along the U.S. border. Devon Peña examines workplace and community struggles from the perspective of the women who work in the maquiladoras. He describes the workers' struggles for workplace democracy, social justice, and sustainable development. He also observes the circulation of struggle from the factory to the community, highlighting the efforts to establish worker-owned cooperatives in the border region during the 1970s and 1980s. Female maquila workers are typically portrayed as passive, apolitical, and easily exploited. This book, however, presents an opposing view, investigating the "subaltern life of the shop floor"—the workers' informal methods of resistance to hazardous conditions, sexual harassment, and managerial tyranny. Using survey research, oral history, discourse analysis, and site ethnography, the author develops a cogent critique of labor-process theory, a critique grounded on his extensive study of actual workplace politics in the maquiladoras. The Terror of the Machine is a trenchant analysis of the political, cultural, and environmental effects of maquila industrialization and an eloquent and persuasive call for alternatives in the direction of ecologically sustainable and culturally appropriate modes of development.

Book The Social Costs of Industrial Growth in Northern Mexico

Download or read book The Social Costs of Industrial Growth in Northern Mexico written by Kathryn Kopinak and published by Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies University of Cali. This book was released on 2004 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foreign export-processing industry is a global phenomenon, with factories known as maquiladoras in Mexico and Central America. While maquiladoras have gone through second- and third-generation production models, with corresponding research literature from business perspectives, the social analyses of these models and 'Mature Maquilization's' effects on health, the environment, infrastructure, and gender inequalities have not yet been adequately addressed. Kathryn Kopinak's fine edited collection is a long-overdue, welcome addition to this gap in the literature. Drawing together a distinguished and committed group of scholars from North America, The Social Costs of Industrial Growth in Mexico provides careful and methodical knowledge on extensive third-generation social costs, with few benefits for workers' abilities to live healthy lives in which they enjoy fruits of their hard labor.
