Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000. Drawn from an international research project, this study provides evidence of efforts to make law and policy-making truly inclusive, and discusses whether success or failure depends on the nature of the procedure, or the legal and social context. The book contains six case studies detailing national practice in promoting equality between the sexes and a series of general chapters which evaluate the effectiveness of individual equality stratgies and the factors which contribute to their success or failure. The contributors analyze the contribution of the European Union in promoting gender equality in Europe, and particular emphasis is placed on gender mainstreaming and how this strategy might be developed.
Download or read book The Garland Handbook of Latin American Music written by Dale Olsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-12-17 with total page 1103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Garland Handbook of Latin American Music is comprised of essays from The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music: Volume 2, South America, Mexico, Central America, and the Carribean, (1998). Revised and updated, the essays offer detailed, regional studies of the different musical cultures of Latin America and examine the ways in which music helps to define the identity of this particular area. Part One provides an in-depth introduction to the area of Latin America and describes the history, geography, demography, and cultural settings of the regions that comprise Latin America. It also explores the many ways to research Latin American music, including archaeology, iconography, mythology, history, ethnography, and practice. Part Two focuses on issues and processes, such as history, politics, geography, and immigration, which are responsible for the similarities and the differences of each region’s uniqueness and individuality. Part Three focuses on the different regions, countries, and cultures of Caribbean Latin America, Middle Latin America, and South America with selected regional case studies. The second edition has been expanded to cover Haiti, Panama, several more Amerindian musical cultures, and Afro-Peru. Questions for Critical Thinking at the end of each major section guide focus attention on what musical and cultural issues arise when one studies the music of Latin America -- issues that might not occur in the study of other musics of the world. Two audio compact discs offer musical examples of some of the music of Latin America.

Download or read book Cognitive Grammar written by Ronald W. Langacker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-02-04 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills a long standing need for a basic introduction to Cognitive Grammar that is current, authoritative, comprehensive, and approachable. It presents a synthesis that draws together and refines the descriptive and theoretical notions developed in this framework over the course of three decades. In a unified manner, it accommodates both the conceptual and the social-interactive basis of linguistic structure, as well as the need for both functional explanation and explicit structural description. Starting with the fundamentals, essential aspects of the theory are systematically laid out with concrete illustrations and careful discussion of their rationale. Among the topics surveyed are conceptual semantics, grammatical classes, grammatical constructions, the lexicon-grammar continuum characterized as assemblies of symbolic structures (form-meaning pairings), and the usage-based account of productivity, restrictions, and well-formedness. The theory's central claim - that grammar is inherently meaningful - is thereby shown to be viable. The framework is further elucidated through application to nominal structure, clause structure, and complex sentences. These are examined in broad perspective, with exemplification from English and numerous other languages. In line with the theory's general principles, they are discussed not only in terms of their structural characterization, but also their conceptual value and functional motivation. Other matters explored include discourse, the temporal dimension of language structure, and what grammar reveals about cognitive processes and the construction of our mental world.
Download or read book Women and Transitional Justice written by Lisa Yarwood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-12 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the evolving principle of transitional justice in public international law and international relations from the female perspective at a time when the concept is increasingly recognised by the international community as an effective framework in which to negotiate and manage a community’s post-conflict transition to peace and stability. The book adopts a gender lens with a particular focus on women’s direct experiences and perceptions either as intended beneficiaries of transitional justice (TJ), protagonists in that process or as practitioners, in order to present a unique view in relation to the development of TJ. The range of experiences and knowledge in this collection provides a fresh and unique perspective through its blend of theory and practice. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars of law, political science and gender studies.
