It attains its greatest size, thirty to fifty feet, with a trunk diameter of a foot to a foot and a half, on cool north slopes or in ravines at the upper end of canyons where snow lies late in summer. On a ridge east of Lamoille there is a fairly dense stand of large trees, and doubtless there are similar groves in the surrounding rugged country, but as a rule it occurs as scattered individuals not frequent enough to impart the dark hue common to timbered ridges. The name for it in the region is white pine. Engelmann, in Trans. St. Louis Acad. 2: 208. 1863, writes as follows concerning this species: "On the Rocky Mountains, from New Mexico to the 49th parallel, 'occupying the subalpine belt, never forming entire forests, in the lower elevations associated with P. contorta, approaching the alpine districts, scattering with P. aristata1 (Parry's Notes)." "P. flexilis, the American representative of P. Cembra of the Old World, is a middle-sized tree, usually 30-50 feet high, though Fendler, a good authority, saw it near Santa Fe 60-80 feet high.... In Colorado it is a fine tree, with tapering trunk and oval outline, branching almo t from the base, lower branches horizontal, upper ones ascending; wood white, hard, annual rings from one-eighth to l/2 line, on an average line wide; trees becoming in 250300 years about 1 foot thick. Leaves crowded towards the ends of the very flexible branches, persistent 5 or 6 years, usually 1 J-2J, very rarely 1 to 3 inches long; sheaths similar to those of P. Strobus or P. Cembra, 8 lines long, deciduous. Male aments 4-5 lines long, forming a thick spike 10-12 lines long, cones subcylindric, ...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Muhlenbergia, 1933, Vol. 7: A Journal of Botany A few days ago while referring to a letter written me by Dr. Greene, I discovered that one sentence had been carelessly read by me, and therefore I owe an apology to both Dr. Greene and Professor C. P. Smith. The passage is as follows: "Lately I was well on the road to a description of a Californian annual species, which is here under the name of "L. apricus." I saw it was not at all that, and hunting further, I discovered that the thing had been published by you quite a while ago; your L. persistens" (vallicola). Now, what I thought at the time, was that Dr. Greene considered apricus to be the same as my vallicola, and so informed Professor Smith. This should clear up the difficulty mentioned by him on page 135 of volume 6. The latter part of May and a few days of early June, 1910, were spent by me in that wonderful country first made known botanically by Captain Meriwether Lewis, and a little later, but now nearly a century past, by that hardy explorer, David Douglas, who first discovered so many of our Pacific coast species. I refer to the Columbia river region. My main object was to study lupines at the places where Douglas collected his types, and this I was able to do in a satisfactory way, although it is necessary to spend several seasons there to cover all the ground. Among the species of which dependable material was obtained are L. micranthus, bicolor, leucophyllus, plumosus, polyphyllus and sulphureus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Muhlenbergia, Vol. 3 In a previous paper in Zoe, February-April, 1901, the writer indicated certain plantae inquirendae whose presence, or place, in the flora of southern California was based on either ascertained error, or unsatisfactory evidence. One of the plants there mentioned, Sambucus Mexicana has since turned up, Mr. Hall having collected it in the San Jacinto mountains; if, at least, we concede S. velutina to be identical with that species. But Mr. Hall's specimens suggest that S. velutina would be disposed of better as a variety of the common S. glauca. The object of the present paper is to call attention to some other erroneous or questionable references. But first it is to be noted that the simple fact that a plant, purporting to have been collected by an early explorer, has not been rediscovered since, is by no means sufficient evidence of an erroneous record.
