Book The Stridentist Movement in Mexico

Download or read book The Stridentist Movement in Mexico written by Elissa Rashkin and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution, Stridentism (estridentismo) burst on the scene in the 1920s as an avant-garde challenge to political and intellectual complacency. Led by poets Manuel Maples Arce, Germán List Arzubide, and Salvador Gallardo; prose writer Arqueles Vela; painters Fermín Revucltas, Ramón Alva de la Canal, Leopoldo Mendez, and Jean Charlot; and sculptor Germán Cueto, the Stridentists rejected academic conservatism, celebrated modernity and technological novelties such as the radio, cinema, and the airplane, and sought to transform not only written and visual language but also everyday life through the creation of new aesthetic spaces and new approaches to the urban environment. By 1928 the movement had dispersed, but its iconoclastic spirit lived on in other forms, mergingin into and influencing other movements of the 1930s and beyond. This history of Stridentism as a multifacted cultural phenomenon joyfully recreates the spirit of 1920s Mexico. Bringing together original research and critical analysis, it explores the ways in which the Stridentists pushed the limits of the collective imatgination in an era of conflict and change.

Download or read book Patriarch and Folk written by E. Bradford Burns and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The painful sixty-year process that brought Nicaragua from colonial status to incipient nation-state is the focus of this fresh examination of inner struggle in a key isthmian country. E. Bradford Burns shows how Nicaragua's elite was able to consolidate control of the state and form a stable government, resolving the bitter rivalry between the two cities Le&oacu;n and Granada, but at the same time began the destruction of the rich folk culture of the Indians, eventually reducing them to an impoverished and powerless agrarian proletariat. The history of this nation echoes that of other Latin American lands yet is peculiarly its own. Nicaragua emerged not from a war against Spain but rather from the violent interactions among the patriarchs of the dominant families, the communities of common people, and foreigners. Burns is eloquent on the subject of American adventurism in Nicaragua, which culminated in the outrageous expedition of the filibuster William Walker and his band of mercenaries in the 1850s. It was a major breach of the trust and friendship Nicaraguans had extended to the United States, and the Nicaraguans' subsequent victory over the foreign invaders helped forge their long-delayed sense of national unity. The decimation of Nicaraguan archives for the period prior to 1858 renders the study of early nineteenth-century history especially challenging, but Burns has made ingenious use of secondary sources and the few published primary materials available, including travelers' accounts and other memoirs, newspapers, government reports, and diplomatic correspondence. He provides valuable insight into Nicaraguan society of the time, of both the elite and the folk, including a perceptive section on the status and activities of women and the family in society. This book will appeal not only to professional historians but to general readers as well.

Book Radical Functionalism

Download or read book Radical Functionalism written by Luis E. Carranza and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-27 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radical Functionalism: A Social Architecture for Mexico provides a complex and nuanced understanding of the functionalist architecture developed in Mexico during the 1930s. It carefully re-reads the central texts and projects of its main advocates to show how their theories responded to the socially and culturally charged Mexican context. These, such as architects Juan Legarreta, Juan O’Gorman, the Union of Socialist Architects, and Manuel Amábilis, were part of broader explorations to develop a modern, national architecture intended to address the needs of the Mexican working classes. Through their refunctioning of functionalism, these radical thinkers showed how architecture could stand at the precipice of Mexico's impending modernization and respond to its impending changes. The book examines their engagement and negotiation with foreign influences, issues of gender and class, and the separation between art and architecture. Functionalist practices are presented as contradictory and experimental, as challenging the role of architecture in the transformation of society, and as intimately linked to art and local culture in the development of new forms of architecture for Mexico, including the "vernacularization" of functionalism itself. Uniquely including translations of two manifesto-like texts by O’Gorman expressing the polemical nature of their investigations, Radical Functionalism: A Social Architecture for Mexico will be a useful reference for scholars, researchers and students interested in the history of architectural movements.
