Download or read book Sand and Sandstone written by F. J. Pettijohn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition appeared fourteen years ago. Since then there have been significant advances in our science that warrant an updating and revision of Sand and Sandstone. The main framework of the first edition has been retained so that the reader can begin with the mineralogy and textural properties of sands and sandstones, progress through their organization and classification and their study as a body of rock, to consideration of their origin-prove nance, transportation, deposition, and lithification-and finally to their place in the stratigraphic column and the basin. The last decade has seen the rise of facies analysis based on a closer look at the stratigraphic record and the recognition of characteristic bed ding sequences that are the signatures of some geologic process-such as a prograding shallow-water delta or the migration of a point bar on an alluvial floodplain. The environment of sand deposition is more closely determined by its place in such depositional systems than by criteria based on textural characteristics-the "fingerprint" approach. Our revi sion reflects this change in thinking. As in the geological sciences as a whole, the concept of plate tectonics has required a rethinking of our older ideas about the origin and accumu lation of sediments-especially the nature of the sedimentary basins.

The relationship between tectonism and basin evolution as well as the concepts of sequence cycle and event stratigraphy in various depositional environments are extensively discussed. Numerous, often composite figures, a well-structured text, brief summaries in boxes, and several examples from all continents make the book an invaluable source of information for students, researchers and professors in academia as well as for professionals in the oil industry.

Book Dynamics of Marine Sands

Download or read book Dynamics of Marine Sands written by Richard Soulsby and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 1997 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practical engineer looking for an urgent solution to a sediment-related project often finds that the results of the relevant academic research are published in unfamiliar language in publications that are not easily available. Dynamics of marine sands bridges the gap between academic research and practical applications by summarising the research results in a unified form, backed up with worked examples and case studies. This comprehensive new book presents methods for calculating the various hydrodynamic and sediment dynamic quantities necessary for marine sediment transport applications, and recommends the most appropriate methods to use for engineering projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep-water (below wave base) processes, although generallyhidden from view, shape the sedimentary record of more than 65% ofthe Earth’s surface, including large parts of ancientmountain belts. This book aims to inform advanced-levelundergraduate and postgraduate students, and professional Earthscientists with interests in physical oceanography and hydrocarbonexploration and production, about many of the important physicalaspects of deep-water (mainly deep-marine) systems. The authorsconsider transport and deposition in the deep sea, trace-fossilassemblages, and facies stacking patterns as an archive of theunderlying controls on deposit architecture (e.g., seismicity, climate change, autocyclicity). Topics include modern and ancientdeep-water sedimentary environments, tectonic settings, and howbasinal and extra-basinal processes generate the typicalcharacteristics of basin slopes, submarine canyons, contouritemounds and drifts, submarine fans, basin floors and abyssalplains.

Book Biogeochemical Processes of Biogenic Elements in China Marginal Seas

Download or read book Biogeochemical Processes of Biogenic Elements in China Marginal Seas written by Jinming Song and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Biogeochemical Processes of Biogenic Elements in China Marginal Seas" is the first monograph dedicated to this topic. The book mainly presents the latest research achievements of China's national research projects about the biogenic element cycling processes in China marginal seas starting in 1999. By describing the biogeochemical processes of China marginal seas, including the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and the South China Sea, it covers almost all kinds of typical ecosystems' regional responses to global oceanic changes of the estuarine ecosystem, the continental shelf ecosystem, the upwelling ecosystem, the coral reef ecosystem, and the mangrove ecosystem. It will be of great interest to scientists and researchers in marine science. Dr. Jinming Song is a professor at Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Book Sedimentary Environments Offshore Norway Palaeozoic to Recent

Download or read book Sedimentary Environments Offshore Norway Palaeozoic to Recent written by O.J. Martinsen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-06-06 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Required reading for geologists working in the offshore areas, Volume 10 continues the series from the Norwegian Petroleum Society. This work provides an up-to-date review of the late Palaeozoic to present sedimentary history of the Norwegian offshore areas in the North Sea and Mid-Norway basins. Case studies, overview articles and analogue examples from adjacent areas such as Greenland and Denmark, present new ideas on the development of the Norwegian margin from the Carboniferous through the Mesozoic and Cenozoic. In particular, new evidence and interpretations are presented on well-known major reservoir-bearing successions such as the Statfjord Formation and Dunlin Group in the Northern North Sea, and the Åre and the Tilje Formations in the Mid-Norway area. Furthermore, the Upper Jurassic succession in the Haltenbanken area is described, giving new evidence on the interplay between extensional tectonics and sedimentation during the second major rift phase in the area. The Cretaceous and Cenozoic periods are treated extensively, showing their importance as overall deep water sedimentary systems with proven and potential reservoir rocks, such as in the Ormen Lange Field, and for causing burial of Jurassic rocks to advantageous depths for hydrocarbon generation. The Recent sedimentary history of the Norwegian margin is treated with examples of the glacial history and giant submarine slides which understanding is vital for the placement of offshore installations. The book is organised based on geologic time, from Palaeozoic through Mesozoic to Cenozoic examples. It includes a set of palaeogeographic maps from the Carboniferous through to the Cenozoic. In addition, there are numerous examples of core photographs, well log data, correlation panels and seismic as well as outcrop photographs and logs from the analogue examples. Comprehensive reference and keyword lists are also included.
