Evans explores how a need to respond to this question shapes the lives of Ahmadis in Qadian in northern India. Qadian was the birthplace of the Ahmadiyya community's founder, and it remains a location of huge spiritual importance for members of the community around the world. It begins with the first seriously contested succession to the caliphate, that of ʿAlī, and proceeds inexorably through the rebellion of 'A'ishah, T'alhah, and al-Zubayr, to the Battle of the Camel, the first time Muslim army faced Muslim army. It thus deals with the very first violent response to the two central problems of Muslim history: who is the rightful leader, and which is the true community? It is a section with the weightiest implications for the Muslim interpretation of history, wide open to special pleading. There are the Shi'a who depict ʿAlī as a spiritual leader fighting against false accusations and the worldly ambitious. Conversely, there are those who would depict him or his followers in a negative light. There are also the 'Abbasid historians, who, though anti-Umayyad, must balance a reverence for the Prophet's household (ahl al-bayt) with a denunciation of 'Alid antiestablishmentarianism. All these points of view, and more, are represented in al-Ṭabarī's compilation, illustrating the difficulty the Muslim community as a whole has faced in coming to terms with these disastrous events.

The task of preserving hadith was taken by Allah himself by means of the Sahabah, the Tabieen and then from generation to generation through unique discipline of hadith sciences. The Sahabah understood that the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) was the final messenger sent for mankind and that the task of preserving his teachings would fall upon their shoulders. Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) instructed them to spread his teachings to those who were absent. They used to give great concern to sitting with the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) to hear aḥadith from him as much as possible. They would tell each other what they had learnt from the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم). The Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) also warned them in strong words about narrating anything from him which is not authentic. At the same time, Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) had also warned, that it is a major sin to hide knowledge, whenever it is asked for. Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) did not restrict himself to giving sermons, he ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) also guided the Sahabah practically. Whenever they learnt anything from the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم) they spared no effort to bring it into practice. A Large number of the Sahabah wrote down ahadith and compiled Sahifas (booklets) after hearing them from the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه وسلم). A number of young companions devoted themselves to attaining knowledge and then passed it down to the following generations. Tabieen followed the example of Sahabah in preserving ahadith, for example, Urwah bin Zubair (nephew of Aisha), Nafi Mawla of Abdullah bin Umar and Thabit bin Aslam al-Bunani spent forty years with Anas bin Malik. Also, Amra bint Abdirrahman grew up with Aisha learning ahadith. Like the Sahabah, the Tabieen also collected and compiled ahadith in booklets which were incorporated in books by the next generation and most of those that survive today are in that form as part of other larger books like Musnad Ahmad, Saheeh al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim, four Sunan and so on. Scholars of ḥadith from the time of the Tabieen developed the science of al-Jarḥ wa Tadeel. This is the science of examining the narrations of different narrators to make a determination about their trustworthiness and thus authenticity of their narrations.

It is addressed to his contemporary ulema, specially Miyan Nazir Husain Dehlawi and Maulawi Muhammad Husain of Batala who had issued a fatwa of heresy against the Promised Messiah(as) and declared him a non-Muslim, because he (the Promised Messiah) had claimed that Jesus Christ had died a natural death and the second coming of Masih ibni Maram (Jesus Christ) is fulfilled by the advent of Hadrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as). Because (by the time the book was written) the ulema had refused to debate this issue with the Promised Messiah, he invited them, in this book, to a spiritual contest in which the question whether someone is a Muslim or not would be settled by Allah himself on the basis of four criteria of a true believer as laid down by Him in the Holy Quran. He also spelled out the modus operandi of this contest and fixed the period of time frame within which this contest would be decreed by Allah. He declared that God would not desert him and would help him and would grant him victory.

The Promised Messiah(as) says the reason for the deluge of sin in the present age is the lack of awareness about God, and this can be remedied neither by the Christian doctrine of Redemption nor by the teachings laid down in the Vedas. True and perfect awareness about God, which is only possible through direct communion with the Almighty, can only be attained through Islam, because all other religions have closed upon themselves the door to Divine revelation and communion.
