Download or read book Mt Whitney Club Journal Vol 1 written by Mt Whitney Club and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mt; Whitney Club Journal, Vol. 1: May, 1902 Our route for a considerable distance was along the\ Hockett trail. The third day we camped on Whitney Creek, upon which we tried unsuccessfully to impress the name Volcano Creek, as that stream does not rise in the vicinity of Mt. Whitney. We lay over a day at this point to explore the craters of two extinct volcanoes and to feast on rainbow trout. From there we traveled across the summit of the mountain range, in order to intersect the Signal Service trail, and passed a night in Diaz Meadows, Inyo County. It was the coldest and most cheerless camp of our jour ney. Its altitude is feet, and bleak winds swept down upon us all night. Captain Wright was the only fleshy member of our party. His ribs were encased in such thick layers of fatty tissue that, knowing his inability to freeze, we elected that he should sleep on the windward side of the camp. Book excerpt: Most of the early explorers of the Sierra Nevada were private individuals, rather than members of government expeditions. The more literate ones had accounts of their achievements published in newspapers and journals. Many of these wilderness travelers have been immortalized by having their names placed on mountains, lakes, and streams. Frank Dusy; Wales, Wallace, and Wright; Theodore S. Solomons; Bolton C. and Lucy Brown; Joseph N. and Marion LeConte; Lt. N. F. McClure; Cornelius Beach Bradley; James E. Hutchinson. In this volume are their personal stories. They are foremost among the few who pioneered the routes that are followed by so many at the present day.

Download or read book Glaciers of California written by Bill Guyton and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1998-10-27 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glaciers in sunny California? Many people will be surprised to learn that there are several hundred in this state, ranging in size from the impressive Whitney Glacier on Mt. Shasta and the Palisade Glacier in the Sierra Nevada to tiny glacierets. While California's glaciers are small compared to those in the northern Rockies or the European Alps, each one is interesting and some are suitable for exploring. Also of note is the fact that Ice Age glaciers carved California's most spectacular mountain scenery—the High Sierra was glaciated several times and glacial landforms are prominent features of the Sierran landscape today. Bill Guyton summarizes the history of the discovery of Ice Age glaciation and modern-day glaciers in California, as well as the development of modern ideas about the state's glacial history. He describes the controversy about the origin of Yosemite Valley and quotes from the colorful accounts of early mountain explorers such as John Muir, Josiah Whitney, and François Matthes. His book provides a primer on glaciers and glacial landforms, a glossary of technical terms, helpful illustrations, and a 100-mile Sierra field trip guide for readers who want to see glaciers and glacial features for themselves. Glaciers of California will make any visit to the mountains more interesting, whether one is carrying a camera, crampons, or a fishing pole.
