Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the Mt Stromlo Observatory in Canberra which began with W.G. Duffield's idealism and vision in 1905. The Observatory began life as a government department, later becoming an optical munitions factory producing gun sights and telescopes during the Second World War, before changing its focus to astrophysics – the new astronomy. In the ensuing years programs were introduced to push the Observatory in new directions at the international frontiers of astronomy. The astronomers built new, better and larger telescopes to unravel the secrets of the universe. There were controversies, exciting new discoveries and new explanations of phenomena that had been discovered. The Observatory and its researchers have contributed to determining how old the universe is, participated in the largest survey of galaxies in the universe, and helped to show us that the universal expansion is accelerating – research that led to Brian Schmidt and his international team being awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. These and other major discoveries are detailed in this fascinating book about one of the great observatories in the world.

Book Mt Stromlo Observatory the Aftermath

Download or read book Mt Stromlo Observatory the Aftermath written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denise Sutherland, a Canberra author, puzzle-writer and artist, and her husband Ralph have a long association with Mount Stromlo. Ralph Sutherland is an astronomer at the Australian National University. On 23 January 2003, just five days after the bushfires wiped out much of Mt Stromlo, members of staff were taken through the ruins. All the telescopes had been destroyed; the steel dome of the 74-inch telescope survived but the smaller telescopes had aluminium domes which melted. The workshops, the Administration Building which also housed the library, the Director’s residence and several other residences for staff and visiting students were destroyed. The Visitor Centre, on the northern side of the ridge, had survived but was smoke damaged, and the Woolley and Duffield Buildings and some residences on the southern side also survived. Most of these photographs were taken by Denise and Ralph on 23 January; the last five were taken on a later visit, after the external debris had been removed and the site made secure. Photographs of the remains of telescopes and buildings.

Book Van Nostrand s Scientific Encyclopedia

Download or read book Van Nostrand s Scientific Encyclopedia written by Douglas M. Considine and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 3529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advancements in science and engineering have occurred at a surprisingly rapid pace since the release of the seventh edition of this encyclopedia. Large portions of the reference have required comprehensive rewriting and new illustrations. Scores of new topics have been included to create this thoroughly updated eighth edition. The appearance of this new edition in 1994 marks the continuation of a tradition commenced well over a half-century ago in 1938 Van Nostrand's Scientific Encyclopedia, First Edition, was published and welcomed by educators worldwide at a time when what we know today as modern science was just getting underway. The early encyclopedia was well received by students and educators alike during a critical time span when science became established as a major factor in shaping the progress and economy of individual nations and at the global level. A vital need existed for a permanent science reference that could be updated periodically and made conveniently available to audiences that numbered in the millions. The pioneering VNSE met these criteria and continues today as a reliable technical information source for making private and public decisions that present a backdrop of technical alternatives.

Book 2009 Mount Stromlo SLR Observatory Local Tie Survey

Download or read book 2009 Mount Stromlo SLR Observatory Local Tie Survey written by Ryan Ruddick and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The integrity and strength of multi-technique terrestrial reference frames, such as realisations of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF), depend on the precisely measured and expressed local-tie connections between space geodetic observing systems at co-located observatories. Australia has several observatories which together host the full variety of space geodetic observation techniques, including Global Navigation Satellites Systems (GNSS), Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) and Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS) beacons. This report documents the technical aspects of the survey undertaken to determine the local-tie connections at the Mount Stromlo SLR Observatory. The Mount Stromlo laser ranging observatory is located next the Australian National University (ANU) Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics on Mount Stromlo in Canberra. The observatory has a Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) telescope co-located with three permanent GNSS sites, two of which contribute to the International GNSS Service (IGS) network. Nearby there is a national gravity observatory at the ANU school and a radio telescope used for Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) at the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC) which is operated by NASA. The survey was conducted in November 2009 by surveyors from Geoscience Australia. Precision classical geodetic observations were combined with geodetic GNSS observations to determine the repeat relationship between the SLR system invariant point (IVP) and the conventional reference points of the GNSS antennas and the surrounding survey control. The results of this survey have been provided to the International Earth Rotation Service (IERS) for inclusion in the next realisation of the ITRF". -- Online abstract.
