Book National Parks and Rural Development

Download or read book National Parks and Rural Development written by Gary E. Machlis and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protecting land in parks is often seen as coming at the expense of rural economic development. Yet recent events such as the contentious debate over the development of Canyon Forest Village on the south rim of the Grand Canyon suggest just the opposite: healthy natural systems can be enormously valuable to rural economies.National Parks and Rural Development offers a thorough examination of the interdependent roles of national parks and the economies of rural communities in the United States. Bringing together the thinking and views of economists, historians, sociologists, recreation researchers, and park managers, the book considers how those roles can be most effectively managed, as it offers: a wide-ranging review of history and important concepts in rural development and parks management five case studies of rural development near national parks that identify lessons learned, principles applied, mistakes committed, and advances made personal essays from leaders in the parks management field For each section, the editors offer introductory discussions that provide context and highlight key points. The editors also provide a detailed conclusion which summarizes policy implications and presents specific recommendations for improving rural development and park management policies.Case studies include: Cape Cod National Seashore, Alaskan parks and wilderness areas, Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Canyon, and three parks in the Pacific Northwest (Mt. Rainier, Olympic, and North Cascades).ational Parks and Rural Development is a unique synthesis and guide to solving conflicts between the needs of human communities and nature near federal lands. It will be an important work for agency personnel, nongovernmental organizations, and students and scholars of rural economic development, public policy, environmental economics, and related fields.

Book Mount Rainier s Historic Inns and Lodges

Download or read book Mount Rainier s Historic Inns and Lodges written by Jeff Anderson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presiding over the Puget Sound region, Mount Rainier has lured adventurers and entrepreneurs to its slopes since the earliest settlers. Visitors rode packhorses or hiked miles to tent "hotels" at Theosophy Ridge, Indian Henry's Hunting Ground, and Ohanapecosh. James Longmire opened Longmire Springs Hotel near bubbling mineral springs. In 1899, Mount Rainier became a national park, and eventually, a motley array of services was consolidated by the Rainier National Park Company, which built National Park Inn and Paradise Inn. Roads, services, and activities expanded, and guests poured in. Winter activities, such as skiing and tobogganing, increased the park's popularity. The 1936 Winter Olympic Ski Trials and training for World War II ski troops were even hosted there. Visitors today might be surprised to know that many inns, rental cabins, bathhouses, and other buildings have come and gone, leaving some areas more pristine now than for much of the park's history.

Download or read book Records of Mount Rainier National Park Classic Reprint written by Nancy M Shader and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of Mount Rainier National Park Cover: us. Department of Interior, Office of National Parks Buildings Reservations, The Master Plan, Mount Rainier National Park 1933. (master Plans) Overleaf: Proposed Hotel Development, Mount Rainier National Park, April 3, 1950. In the late 19405 and early 1950s the public demanded that the National Park Service (nps) develop a winter use policy that would make the Paradise area of Mount Rainier a ski resort. Skiers wanted all-year road access, overnight accommodations, and a chair lift or an aerial tram at Paradise. The proposed hotel would have had 250 guest rooms, employee quarters and offices, a museum, lecture hall, warming rooms and ski shops. The dining room and cafeteria would have seated 475. The nps did not want to turn Mt. Rainier into a ski resort and rejected the hotel proposal. Other regional ski areas emerged over the next decade and public demand for a ski resort at Paradise decreased.
