To understand my sequel it is not necessary to have read the play which so brilliantly placed the Warren problem before us. But as most persons of average good education have found Mr. Shaw's com edies necessary to their mental furnishing, their under standing of contemporary life, it is probable that all who would be drawn to this book are already acquainted with the story of Mrs. Warren, and will be interested in learn ing what happened after that story was laid down by Mr. Shaw in 1897. I would in addition placate hostile or peevish reviewers by reminding them of the continuity of human histories; of biographies, real - though a little disguised by the sauce of fiction and unreal because entitled Life and Letters, by H is Widow. The best novel or life-story ever written does not commence with its opening page. The real commencement goes back to the Stone ages or at any rate to the antecedent circumstances which led up to the crisis or the formation of the char acters portrayed. Mr. Pickwick had a father, a grand father; a mother in a mob - cap; in the eighteenth century. It is permissible to speculate on their stories and disposi tions. Neither does a novel or a biography end with the final page of its convenient instalment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The date when this story begins is a Saturday afternoon in June, 1900, about 3 p.m. The scene is the western room of a suite of offices on the fifth floor of a house in Chancery Lane, the offices of Fraser and Warren, Consultant Actuaries and Accountants. There is a long window facing west, the central part of which is open, affording a passage out on to a parapet. Through this window, and still better from the parapet outside, may be seen the picturesque spires and turrets of the Law Courts, a glimpse here and there of the mellow, red-brick, white-windowed houses of New Square, the tree-tops of Lincoln's Inn Fields, and the hint beyond a steepled and chimneyed horizon of the wooded heights of Highgate. All this outlook is flooded with the brilliant sunshine of June, scarcely dimmed by the city smoke and fumes. In the room itself there are on each of the tables vases of flowers and a bunch of dark red roses on the top of the many pigeon-holed bureau at which Vivien Warren is seated. The walls are mainly covered with book-shelves well filled with consultative works on many diverse subjects.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: very good, University of Hannover (English Seminar), language: English, abstract: In 1894 George Bernard Shaw wrote a play about prostitution called ”Mrs Warren’s Profession”. In Queen Victoria’s days it was forbidden to stage the play by censorship because of the shown decay and all the public theatres did not dare it. In 1902 a private theatre company that often staged forbidden plays in those days – the Stage Society – decided to perform it.1 But there is not only the aspect of prostitution dealt with in Shaw’s play. This essay will look into the relationship of Mrs Kitty Warren and her daughter Vivie, two totally different women who try to cope with life. For this reason their different ways of life shall be described and they shall be characterised. Afterwards their concepts of life will be compared and the conflict between mother and daughter will be examined. But the essay will not only contrast the two women but also show the similarities between them. 1 Shaw, George Bernard: Preface of Mrs Warren’s Profession. In: Plays Unpleasant. Harmondsworth: Penguin.1975. pp.181-182.

"Mrs. Warren's Profession" is a play written by George Bernard Shaw in 1894, and first performed in London in 1902. The title refers to prostitution. The story centres on the relationship between Mrs Kitty Warren and her daughter, Vivie. Mrs. Warren, a former prostitute and current brothel owner, is described as "on the whole, a genial and fairly presentable old blackguard of a woman." Vivie, an intelligent and pragmatic young woman who just graduated from college, has come home to get acquainted with her mother for the first time in her life. The play focuses on how their relationship changes when Vivie learns what her mother does for a living. It explains why Mrs. Warren became a prostitute, condemns the hypocrisies relating to prostitution, and criticizes the limited employment opportunities available for women in Victorian Britain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vivie Warren is a well-educated young woman, with clear, dispassionate plans for her future life and career. Over the course of two days, those plans are upended as she discovers how her mother earned the fortune on which they both live. Mrs. Warren’s Profession was shocking to the audience for which George Bernard Shaw wrote it in 1893; so much so that it could not be publicly performed until 1925, with the 1902 London premiere taking place in a private club for legal reasons. Its New York premiere, in 1905, was halted by the police and the cast arrested. The London press was outraged by the 1902 performance, and in response Shaw wrote a new preface, included in this edition, furiously attacking the hypocrisy of his critics who praised plays like La Dame Aux Camélias that glamorized the lives of fashionable courtesans, but condemned his play’s attack on the sordid reality of Victorian prostitution and the poverty that drove women to it. Shaw’s delicate handling of the controversial subjects of prostitution and incest may seem tame or even prudish to a modern reader; Mrs. Warren’s profession is never even named in the course of the play. But in other respects the play is strikingly modern. Vivie’s struggle to reconcile her ethical principles with the realities of the world around her is still relevant today, and the central relationship between Mrs. Warren and her daughter is complex and nuanced as any modern psychological drama. In the end it is the strength of the characters, not the once scandalous subject matter, that makes Mrs. Warren’s Profession one of Shaw’s most enduring plays. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
