Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Tubingen (Institute for Anglistics), course: PS I: Introduction to Literary Studies, language: English, abstract: Introduction "Mrs Warren′s Profession was written in 1894 to draw the attention to the truth that prostitution is caused, not by female depravity and male licentiousness, but simply by underpaying, under-valuing and over-working women so shamefully that the poorest of them are forced to resort to prostitution to keep body and soul together." (Shaw in his preface to Mrs Warren′s Profession; The Guthrie Theater Study Guide). This paper analyzes how George Bernard Shaw explores the problem of prostitution and the temptations that Vivie Warren faces in his play "Mrs Warren′s Profession" written in 1894. Concerning the problem of prostitution, Shaw gives an account of a conflict between individual needs and the morality of Victorian society. Furthermore, Shaw exposes the downsides of the principles and morality of the upper classes at the turn of the century. It was a period of sexual repression, which lasted during the 1890s and into the 20th century. The author claims that the "White Slave Traffic", which referred to prostitutes as slaves, was a social problem in post-industrial revolution England. First I will analyze the exploration of the problem of prostitution by looking at the characters and their opinion towards prostition. Then I will focus on the justifications and reasons for prostitution that Shaw provides. In the second half of this paper, I will analyze the temptations Vivie Warren has to face also by looking at the characters and the evolution she goes through. I will finish off with a conclusion in respect to both analyses and by viewing the play as a morality play. Because of the focus on prostitution and Shaw′s critical view of society′s attitude towards it, the play was censored and wasn′t performed unt

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Middle-aged Mrs. Warren is a madam, proprietress of a string of successful brothels. Her daughter, Vivie, is a modern young woman, but not so modern that she's not shocked to discover the source of her mother's wealth. The clash of these two strong-willed but culturally constrained Victorian women is the spark that ignites the ironic wit of one of George Bernard Shaw's greatest plays, a withering critique of male domination, sexual hypocrisy, and societal convention. Initially banned after its 1893 publication with its startling frankness, Mrs. Warren's Profession remains a powerful work of progressive theater. Irish playwright GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (1856-1950) won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925 and an Academy Award for Adapted Screenplay in 1938, the only person to achieve both honors. Among his many renowned plays are Arms and the Man (1894), Candida (1894), Man and Superman (1903), Major Barbara (1905), and Pygmalion (1913).

Over the course of two days, those plans are upended as she discovers how her mother earned the fortune on which they both live. Mrs. Warren’s Profession was shocking to the audience for which George Bernard Shaw wrote it in 1893; so much so that it could not be publicly performed until 1925, with the 1902 London premiere taking place in a private club for legal reasons. Its New York premiere, in 1905, was halted by the police and the cast arrested. The London press was outraged by the 1902 performance, and in response Shaw wrote a new preface, included in this edition, furiously attacking the hypocrisy of his critics who praised plays like La Dame Aux Camélias that glamorized the lives of fashionable courtesans, but condemned his play’s attack on the sordid reality of Victorian prostitution and the poverty that drove women to it. Shaw’s delicate handling of the controversial subjects of prostitution and incest may seem tame or even prudish to a modern reader; Mrs. Warren’s profession is never even named in the course of the play. But in other respects the play is strikingly modern. Vivie’s struggle to reconcile her ethical principles with the realities of the world around her is still relevant today, and the central relationship between Mrs. Warren and her daughter is complex and nuanced as any modern psychological drama. In the end it is the strength of the characters, not the once scandalous subject matter, that makes Mrs. Warren’s Profession one of Shaw’s most enduring plays. Book excerpt: Mrs. Warren's Profession is a play written by George Bernard Shaw in 1893, and first performed in London in 1902. The play is about a former prostitute, now a madam (brothel proprietor), who attempts to come to terms with her disapproving daughter. It is a problem play, offering social commentary to illustrate Shaw's belief that the act of prostitution was not caused by moral failure but by economic necessity. Elements of the play were borrowed from Shaw's 1882 novel Cashel Byron's Profession, about a man who becomes a boxer due to limited employment opportunities. The story centres on the relationship between Mrs Kitty Warren and her daughter, Vivie. Mrs. Warren, a former prostitute and current brothel owner, is described as "on the whole, a genial and fairly presentable old blackguard of a woman." Vivie, an intelligent and pragmatic young woman who has just graduated from university, has come home to get acquainted with her mother for the first time in her life.[1] The play focuses on how their relationship changes when Vivie learns what her mother does for a living. It explains why Mrs. Warren became a prostitute, condemns the hypocrisies relating to prostitution, and criticises the limited employment opportunities available for women in Victorian Britain. The clash of these two strong-willed, but culturally constrained Victorian women, is the spark that ignites the ironic wit of one of George Bernard Shaw's greatest plays, in a withering critique of male domination, sexual hypocrisy, and societal convention.[Summer afternoon in a cottage garden on the eastern slope of a hill a little south of Haslemere in Surrey. Looking up the hill, the cottage is seen in the left hand corner of the garden, with its thatched roof and porch, and a large latticed window to the left of the porch. A paling completely shuts in the garden, except for a gate on the right. The common rises uphill beyond the paling to the sky line. Some folded canvas garden chairs are leaning against the side bench in the porch. A lady's bicycle is propped against the wall, under the window. A little to the right of the porch a hammock is slung from two posts. A big canvas umbrella, stuck in the ground, keeps the sun off the hammock, in which a young lady is reading and making notes, her head towards the cottage and her feet towards the gate. In front of the hammock, and within reach of her hand, is a common kitchen chair, with a pile of serious-looking books and a supply of writing paper on it.][A gentleman walking on the common comes into sight from behind the cottage. He is hardly past middle age, with something of the artist about him, unconventionally but carefully dressed, and clean-shaven except for a moustache, with an eager susceptible face and very amiable and considerate manners. He has silky black hair, with waves of grey and white in it. His eyebrows are white, his moustache black. He seems not certain of his way. He looks over the palings; takes stock of the place; and sees the young lady.] THE GENTLEMAN [taking off his hat] I beg your pardon. Can you direct me to Hindhead View-Mrs Alison's?THE YOUNG LADY [glancing up from her book] This is Mrs Alison's. [She resumes her work].THE GENTLEMAN. Indeed! Perhaps-may I ask are you Miss Vivie Warren?THE YOUNG LADY [sharply, as she turns on her elbow to get a good look at him] Yes.THE GENTLEMAN [daunted and conciliatory] I'm afraid I appear intrusive. My name is Praed. [Vivie at once throws her books upon the chair, and gets out of the hammock]. Oh, pray don't let me disturb you.VIVIE [striding to the gate and opening it for him] Come in, Mr Praed. [He comes in]. Glad to see you. [She proffers her hand and takes his with a resolute and hearty grip. She is an attractive specimen of the sensible, able, highly-educated young middle-class Englishwoman. Age 22. Prompt, strong, confident, self-possessed. Plain business-like dress, but not dowdy. She wears a chatelaine at her belt, with a fountain pen and a paper knife among its pendants]. PRAED. Very kind of you indeed, Miss Warren. [She shuts the gate with a vigorous slam. He passes in to the middle of the garden, exercising his fingers, which are slightly numbed by her greeting]. Has your mother arrived?
