To say that she had a genius for teaching, that she devised improved methods, that she wrote admirable textbooks, and that she impressed her own high ideals upon the characters of her pupils is indeed great praise. But it is a still greater glory to have started a movement which has revolutionized the ideas of the civilized world on the subject of woman's education, a movement which has culminated in the founding of grand colleges exclusively for women and in the admission of women to older colleges on equal terms with men. For it is not too much to say that Wellesley and Vas sar and their sister institutions on either side the Atlantic are the fair fruitage, in time, of those seminal ideas so ably set forth in Mrs. W illard's Plan of Female Education. It is interesting to study the origin of such a great movement; it is like tracing some noble river upward to its sources in the dis tant mountains. Let it be our pleasant task to search out, as far as possible, the influences that shaped Mrs. Willard's career as an educator. In so doing we shall find that the formative period of her life was the twelve years spent in Middlebury - a period passed over too cursorily in Dr. Lord's biography. The fresh interest in this truly great woman, awakened by the Emma Willard associa tions of the country, is an additional reason for considering more in detail the incidents of this portion of her life and for inquiring into the moral forces which called forth her grand ideas regarding the scope of woman's education. We should, as a preliminary, call to mind briefly the circum stances of her early life in Connecticut, her excellent parentage, the beautiful home life of her childhood, her two years of earnest study under Dr. Wells, her brilliant success as a teacher at the early age of 17. These facts help us to picture the bright, noble hearted woman who, at the age of 20, came in 1807 to take charge of the female academy at Middlebury. In the popular view, feminine charm was generally synonymous with ignorance. And unusual was the young lady allowed to study beyond the fundamentals of reading, writing, and arithmetic, or (if wealthy) music, painting, embroidery, and French. Then Emma Hart Willard came forward with the disquieting notion -- drawn from her experience as founder of the Middlebury Female Seminary -- that women could indeed, with no obvious harm to health or sensibility, comprehend the higher subjects. Here is the singular story of a dynamic and seemingly tireless woman, devoted ahead of her times to the cause of higher education for women. In 1819, Mrs. Willard presented her Plan for Improving Female Education before the New York legislature. In 1821, with the support of the city's enterprising citizens, she opened the Troy Female Seminary, which in return became the well-known Emma Willard School. It was the early graduates of this school who helped to meet the demand for teachers in burgeoning towns on the Western frontier. The Seminary itself was a model for similar institutions throughout the nation and in Europe, and was forerunner of the Normal School in America. Mrs. Willard wrote textboks in history, astronomy, and geography, and established a school for young women in liberated Greece. Never an active supporter of the suffrage movement, she nevertheless worked continually to prepare women for the responsibilities she knew would come with new civil and political freedoms. Returning to a subject she first treated in 1929, Alma Lutz has written an absorbing account of one woman's contribution to the making of America. Because of Emma Willard's courageous and determined stand, first seminaries and high schools for girls, then women's colleges and coeducational universities, have become a permanent part of American life.

McMahon’s archival research into the private documents of middling and well-to-do Americans in northern states illuminates educated women’s experiences with particular life stages and relationship arcs: friendship, family, courtship, marriage, and motherhood. In their personal and social relationships, educated women attempted to live as the "mere equals" of men. Their often frustrated efforts reveal how early national Americans grappled with the competing issues of women’s intellectual equality and sexual difference. In the new nation, a pioneering society, pushing westward and unmooring itself from established institutions, often enlisted women’s labor outside the home and in areas that we would deem public. Yet, as a matter of law, women lacked most rights of citizenship and this subordination was authorized by an ideology of sexual difference. What women and men said about education, how they valued it, and how they used it to place themselves and others within social hierarchies is a highly useful way to understand the ongoing negotiation between equality and difference. In public documents, "difference" overwhelmed "equality," because the formal exclusion of women from political activity and from economic parity required justification. McMahon tracks the ways in which this public disparity took hold in private communications. By the 1830s, separate and gendered spheres were firmly in place. This was the social and political heritage with which women’s rights activists would contend for the rest of the century.
