Book excerpt: Virgil, a fifteen year old loner, fears the voice he hears in his head will cause him to become a psychopath. Just when it seems there is no escape from his other-self, he seizes the opportunity to work on a farm over summer vacation. During those eight weeks he is confronted with two mysteries. The first, in partnership with a recluse, gun toting hermit, to uncover three murders resulting in a suicide. Then, along with a feisty teenage girl who is equally adept with butcher knife or shotgun, to solve the mysterious disappearance of Virgil's co-worker. By summer's end, Virgil has learned to take better advantage of the double-think ability offered by his other-self, and that meaningful relationships beat being a loner.

Book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson Retirement Series Volume 6

Download or read book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson Retirement Series Volume 6 written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume Six of the definitive edition of Thomas Jefferson's papers from the end of his presidency until his death presents 516 documents from 11 March to 27 November 1813. Although free from the cares of government, Jefferson cannot disassociate himself from politics entirely. He recommends to President James Madison during the War of 1812 that gunboats be used to protect the Chesapeake Bay, and writes to his congressional son-in-law, John Wayles Eppes, urging the repayment of the national debt and the reining in of the American banking system. Jefferson remains active and healthy, making trips to his beloved Poplar Forest estate, entertaining visitors at Monticello, and happily supervising the education of his grandchildren and other relations. His correspondence shows no signs of abating--he writes to John Waldo and John Wilson to discuss the improvement of English orthography, addresses Isaac McPherson as part of a plea for limits on government-sanctioned intellectual-property rights, and provides a study of Meriwether Lewis for Nicholas Biddle's History of the Expedition under the command of Captains Lewis and Clark. Finally, this volume records the most intense period of correspondence between Jefferson and John Adams during their retirement. In an exchange of thirty-one letters, the two men reveal their hopes and fears for the nation.

Book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson Volume 28

Download or read book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson Volume 28 written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings Jefferson into retirement after his tenure as Secretary of State and returns him to private life at Monticello. He professes his desire to be free of public responsibilities and live the life of a farmer, spending his time tending to his estates. Turning his attention to the improvement of his farms and finances, Jefferson surveys his fields, experiments with crop rotation, and establishes a nailery on Mulberry Row. He embarks upon an ambitious plan to renovate Monticello, a long-term task that will eventually transform his residence. Although Jefferson is distant from Philadelphia, the seat of the federal government, he is not completely divorced from the politics of the day. His friends, especially James Madison, with whom he exchanges almost sixty letters in the period covered by this volume, keep him fully informed about the efforts of Republican county and town meetings, the Virginia General Assembly, Congress, and the press to counter Federalist policies. An emerging Republican opposition is taking shape in response to the Jay Treaty, and Jefferson is keenly interested in its progress. Although in June, 1795, he claims to have "proscribed newspapers" from Monticello, in fact he never entirely cuts himself off from the world. At the end of that year, he takes pains to ensure that he will have two full sets of Benjamin Franklin Bache's Aurora, the influential Republican newspaper, one set to be held in Philadelphia for binding and one to be sent directly to Monticello.
