Book The Politics of Nursing Knowledge

Download or read book The Politics of Nursing Knowledge written by Anne Marie Rafferty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of Nursing Knowledge puts into context the historical factors which have shaped and sometimes limited the development of nurse education. Anne Marie Rafferty makes a critical reappraisal of Florence Nightingale's vision of nursing and looks at how training and policy-making have evolved from the origins of hospital reform in the 1860s to the start of the National Health Service in 1948. Highlighting the contemporary issues confronting all those in training, the book questions the extent to which nursing fits into the mould of both a profession and an academic discipline. Based on substantial new research, The Politics of Nursing Knowledge is a valuable resource for nursing students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Book First Nurse

Download or read book First Nurse written by Main and published by Strident Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Ethel Bedford Fenwick, written by Jenny Main, is a biography of one of the Nineteenth Century's major reformers to whom the nursing profession owes an eternal debt of gratitude.Ethel was born Ethel Gordon Manson in the Morayshire town of Elgin in 1857. Unusually for someone of that era, Ethel had an early ambition to become a nurse, when nursing was not high on the list of preferred occupations for young ladies. At the age of 21, Ethel commenced training in Nottingham as a paying probationer nurse. Her expertise was soon noted and it was not long before she left for London, where she worked in hospitals in Whitechapel, and Richmond. In 1881, aged 24, Ethel was appointed Matron of St Bartholomew's Hospital, a post she held for the next six years. One of the oldest hospitals in the world, 'Barts ' tended the poor and its traditions and working practises were entrenched to say the least. In the eyes of one observer, Miss Manson " swept through the hospital like a whirlwind" and soon instituted reforms that were to change the course and status of nursing for ever.Ethel Manson resigned her post in 1887 to marry a doctor Bedford Fenwick, since it was unthinkable that a married woman could also be a matron. Her career, however, did not end with marriage and she devoted her life to fighting for the improvement of the status of the nursing profession. That she succeeded is proved by her name being the first to appear on the list of State Registered Nurses. Ethel was also instrumental in founding the International Congress of Nurses and was its president for the first five years .It is clear that Ethel Bedford Fenwick did not suffer fools gladly, if at all, and her fiery character was more than a challenge to the establishment. As Lord Inman recalled in his autobiography: "Mrs Bedford Fenwick was a woman with whom it was possible to do business on terms of complete subservience."

Book Challenging Medicine

  • Author : David Kelleher
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2013-05-13

  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Challenging Medicine written by David Kelleher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly topical and controversial book presents a lively re-appraisal of the current changes to the health service and analyzes their effects on the status and practice of health professionals. Modern medicine is a powerful institution. With the help of highly-developed drugs and surgical techniques, it promises to relieve suffering, improve the quality of life and extend the life-span. Conversely, it is expensive for the governments, insurance companies and individuals who pay for it and sometimes appears to be insensitive to the needs of those for whom it provides. And while recent restructuring of healthcare delivery services has provided medical practitioners with new challenges, there has been very little consideration of the range of pressures that they now face. Edited and written by experienced medical sociologists, this book draws together analysis of a number of diverse challenges to medicine, and provides original debate on the challenges posed from within medicine from nurses and managers and alternative practitioners, and from outside by self-help groups, the women’s movement and the media.
