Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mrs. Anne Hutchinson: A Paper Read Before the New England Historic Genealogical Society, February 6, 1901 That there were errors and wanderings, as well as mists and tempests, in the infant town of Boston during the years of which I am to speak, is certain; that they gathered largely about the person of Mistress Anne Hutchinson, if they were not wholly due to her active influence and her restless tongue, is equally certain; but it is not so certain that, even from our present vant age ground of truth, we can justly estimate either the provocation or the intolerance of the prosecution and punishment which she suffered. It is so difficult to enter intelligently into the conditions and the differences of a long-past generation that our judgments concerning them must of necessity be cautious and tentative.
