  • Pages : 578 pages

Download or read book Planet Simpson written by Chris Turner and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2010-05-28 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A smart, accessible and funny cultural analysis of The Simpsons, its inside stories and the world it reflects. From Bart Simpson to Monty Burns, the Internet boom to the slow drowning of Tuvalu, Planet Simpson explores how one of the most popular shows in television history has changed the way we look at our bewildering times. Award-winning journalist Chris Turner delves into the most esoteric of Simpsons fansites and on-line subcultures, the show’s inside jokes, its sharpest parodies and its ongoing love-hate relationship with celebrity to reveal a rarity of literary accomplishment and pop-cultural import — something never before achieved by a cartoon. Complementing its satirical brilliance, The Simpsons boasts a beloved cast of characters, examined here in playful and scrupulous detail: Homer, selfish, tyrannical and not too bright, but always contentedly beholden to his family; Bart, pre-teen nihilist and punk icon; Lisa, junior feminist crusader; and Marge, archetypical middle-American mother, perpetually dragging her family kicking and screaming to higher moral ground. And while the voice actors behind the regular cast have eschewed celebrity, Turner considers why a stunning host of guests — Hollywood icons and has-beens, politicians, professional athletes, poets and pop stars — have submitted themselves to the parodic whims of the Simpsons’ writers. Intelligent and rambunctious, absorbing and comic, Planet Simpson mines this modern cultural institution for its imaginative, hilarious, but always dead-on, reflections on our world. Excerpt from Planet Simpson Three Fun Facts About “D’ oh!” 1. The Oxford English Dictionary defines “d’oh” as “Expressing frustration at the realization that things have turned out badly or not as planned, or that one has just said or done something foolish.” 2. The origins of “D’oh!” A Tracey Ullman– era Simpsons script called for Homer to respond to an unfortunate turn of events thus: “[annoyed grunt].” Dan Castellaneta, the voice-actor who plays Homer, improvised the exclamation, “D’oh!” It stuck. 3. The godfather of “D’oh!” Dan Castellaneta freely admits that he lifted Homer’s famous yelp from James Finlayson, a Scottish actor who played a bald, cross-eyed villain in a number of Laurel & Hardy films in the 1930s. Finlayson’s annoyed grunt was a more drawn-out groan — Doooohhh! Castellaneta sped it up to create Homer’s trademark.

Book A Biographical Dictionary of Actors Actresses Musicians Dancers Managers Other Stage Personnel in London 1660 1800

Download or read book A Biographical Dictionary of Actors Actresses Musicians Dancers Managers Other Stage Personnel in London 1660 1800 written by Philip H. Highfill and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the works already published, these latest volumes of the Biographical Dictionary deal with theatre people of every ilk, ranging from dressers and one-performance actors to trumpeter John Shore (inventor of the tuning fork) and the incomparable Sarah Siddons. Also prominent is Susanna Rowson, a novelist, actress, and early female playwright. Although born into a British military family, Rowson often wrote plays that dealt with patriotic American themes and spent much of her career on the American stage. The theatrical jewel of these volumes is the "divine Sarah" Siddons: "She raised the tragedy to the skies," wrote William Hazlitt, and "embodied to our imagination the fables of mythology, of the heroic and dignified mortals of elder time." She endured much tragedy herself, including a crippling debilitating illness and the deaths of five of her seven children. Siddons played major roles in both comedy and tragedy, not the least of which was a performance as Hamlet.

Book Homer Economicus

Download or read book Homer Economicus written by Joshua Hall and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Homer Economicus a cast of lively contributors takes a field trip to Springfield, where the Simpsons reveal that economics is everywhere. By exploring the hometown of television's first family, this book provides readers with the economic tools and insights to guide them at work, at home, and at the ballot box. Since The Simpsons centers on the daily lives of the Simpson family and its colorful neighbors, three opening chapters focus on individual behavior and decision-making, introducing readers to the economic way of thinking about the world. Part II guides readers through six chapters on money, markets, and government. A third and final section discusses timely topics in applied microeconomics, including immigration, gambling, and health care as seen in The Simpsons. Reinforcing the nuts and bolts laid out in any principles text in an entertaining and culturally relevant way, this book is an excellent teaching resource that will also be at home on the bookshelf of an avid reader of pop economics.

Book If You Can t Be Better Than an N Word Then Who Can You Be Better Than

Download or read book If You Can t Be Better Than an N Word Then Who Can You Be Better Than written by Thomas Sass and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's elites utilize the divide-and-conquer strategy, and with African Americans, they have found their first target. Centuries of brainwashing have instilled a superiority high in many whites and at the same time placed blacks in less-than positions. I intend to show to what extent Apartheidism and the "less-than" culture affect blacks in several different environments, such as how the criminal "justice" system is used to marginalize and criminalize blacks at rates disproportionate to their population. Even the sports world can be more problematic for blacks than for non-blacks. I will present people and events that will show the double standards society has been led to not only accept but to expect, and just how easily we seem to have been manipulated. Most, and perhaps none of which could have been so relatively easily accomplished if the "drug" of superiority did not cloud our perceptions.
