Book The Presidential Difference

Download or read book The Presidential Difference written by Fred I. Greenstein and published by Free Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fred Greenstein is among the top students of the American presidency - his book on Eisenhower, THE HIDDEN-HAND PRESIDENCY, is regarded as a classic. His pioneering work in political psychology has done much to illuminate the nature of power and leadership writ large. Now, as the culmination of a half century of study and firsthand experience, THE PRESIDENTIAL DIFFERENCE rewrites the book on greatness in the presidency. Greenstein looks at both personality and context to consider how well each president 'fit' his times. From FDR to Clinton, he paints a portrait, by turns sweeping and detailed, of the era of the imperial presidency. THE PRESIDENTIAL DIFFERENCE employs a concise set of six categories by which a chief of staff is rated: communication, organisation, natural skill, vision, cognitive style, and the unexpected key to the whole package - emotional intelligence. Not since Richard Neustadt's PRESIDENTIAL POWER has a scholar so clearly defined the keys to success for the world's most powerful office.

Book excerpt: At a school where Quantum Paradox 101 is a required course and history field trips are literal, sixteen year-old time traveler Bree Bennis excels...at screwing up. After Bree botches a solo midterm to the 21st century by accidentally taking a boy hostage (a teensy snafu), she stands to lose her scholarship. But when Bree sneaks back to talk the kid into keeping his yap shut, she doesn't go back far enough. The boy, Finn, now three years older and hot as a solar flare, is convinced he's in love with Bree, or rather, a future version of her that doesn't think he's a complete pain in the arse. To make matters worse, she inadvertently transports him back to the 23rd century with her. Once home, Bree discovers that a recent rash of accidents at her school are anything but accidental. Someone is attacking time travelers. As Bree and her temporal tagalong uncover seemingly unconnected clues—a broken bracelet, a missing data file, the art heist of the millennium—that lead to the person responsible, she alone has the knowledge to piece the puzzle together. Knowledge only one other person has. Her future self. But when those closest to her become the next victims, Bree realizes the attacker is willing to do anything to stop her. In the past, present, or future.

Book The Enjoy Agenda

Download or read book The Enjoy Agenda written by Rick Bailey and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part memoir, part travelogue, The Enjoy Agenda takes readers from Rick Bailey’s one-stoplight town in Michigan farm country to Stratford, England, to the French Concession in Shanghai, the Adriatic coast of Italy, and to a small village in the Republic of San Marino. With his self-deprecating style, Bailey recalls the traumas of picture day in elementary school and lugging a guitar to the Cotswalds and back. He reflects on food safety in China, relives a dental emergency in Venice, and embarks on a quest for il formaggio del perdono (the cheese of forgiveness) in the hills above the Adriatic. Bailey, whose voice is a combination of Dave Barry and Rick Steves with just a soupçon of Montaigne, writes with humor and wit about how these experiences reflect the issues and conflicts of contemporary American life: environmental change, life in digital times, and the vicissitudes of arriving at ripe old age. Throughout The Enjoy Agenda Bailey asks, “Where am I and how did I get here?” a question less about geography than the difficulties and gifts of becoming a husband and ultimately a partner changed and improved by a very smart woman and challenged and delighted by a gradual but seismic culture shift.

Barnum in the United States, but in the 20th century pageants and contests have spread across the entire world from Nepal to Tierra Del Fuego. Why are women (and sometimes men in drag) parading on stage such a universally appealing spectacle, attracting an audience in the billions? This book is the first global comparison of pageants from different parts of the world, at the ways each contest is both intensely local and unique, and simultaneously global and remarkable repetitious. The authors use the latest tools of feminist, ethnographic, and literary scholarship to unpack and interpret one of the greatest and most universal spectacles of modern times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IF YOU THINK YOU ARE BEATEN, YOU ARE. This is the memoir of Richard Hicks—lawyer, author, activist, volunteer, world traveler, and ardent sailor—written primarily to record, for his grandchildren and their progeny, the salient events of his life. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1937, he moved to San Diego, California in 1949, following the death of his father. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, as an undergraduate (1959), and from Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law (1962), he spent three years in the U.S. Army, as an officer in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps, before embarking on a twenty-three year career as a business trial lawyer, in San Francisco and Los Angeles. For twenty years he and his wife, Phyllis—whom he met and married while in college— were actively involved as participants and facilitators with the non-profit educational foundations, Creative Initiative and Beyond War. In retirement he wrote and published seven novels, served as pro-bono executive director of Habitat for Humanity-Los Angeles, and has helped over 2000 victims of domestic violence as a volunteer attorney at the superior court restraining order clinic operated by the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program. A passionate sailor, he has sailed extensively, including over thirty-five bareboat charters throughout the Caribbean and Pacific.
